aaah...i've been saving this thread up to read for ages and it took an hour but it was well worth it. especially as like a few others, i have never heard the dave matthews band, suspect i never will and don't really care... perhaps dave's obsession with stopping "bootleggers" stopped any of his records traversing the atlantic ? any more clarification on the equivalent group that anyone in europe might have heard of (i can't believe that coldplay have loads of improvising soloists or whatever...) ?

kieron, Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

There's been obvious changes in every record, not that I'd expect you to notice that. I never said their skills would get better...though they have gotten progressively more talented over the years and I don't expect it to stop now. But as long as they make music, I'm sure they'll still have an audience. Since there's no sign of breaking up, their "downward slope" probably won't be in the near future. (sorry)

paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever mows yer lawn, Paige.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

some day they'll reach a transcendental state if our calculations of their steady improvement are correct.

at this point the worlds population will merge into one super being, and roam the galaxy looking for skins.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

you can measure their downward slope either in terms of creativity (paige, et. al: do you think Everyday was better than Under the Table and Dreaming?) or in terms of sales/popularity (in which case they peaked five years ago - check the numbers), but pretending they aren't past their peak - however you measure it - just because they're still going to release albums and they still have a fanbase is like pretending Molly Hatchet or Huey Lewis and the News haven't peaker either. Their best days are behind them - the future belongs to DMCB!

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

any more clarification on the equivalent group that anyone in europe might have heard of ?

Sting or Yes?

Brain, Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh please don't compare DMB to Yes. Yes have at least come out with some imaginative music in their day, however noodley and bloated they may irrefutably be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I am sure Dave Matthews Fans think the same about him.

Brain, Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

That his music is noodley and bloated? I agree.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Sting is a much more interesting asshole than Dave Matthews ever will be

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

True dat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Talentwise, yes. Everyday is better than UTTAD, but the future will tell if their peak has passed, or is yet to come. What is your obsession with the friggen cover band? I saw them in Myrtle beach and they were shit compared to DMB. Plus DMB actually wrote the stuff and is somewhat crative in playing their parts...doesn't take much to just play it how it's written (as DMCB do)

paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

That his music is noodley and bloated? I agree.

haha. Cant see the ones on this board admitting that. Even though its quite true.

Brain, Sunday, 8 June 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess "noodley" and "bloated" are some sort of complex musical terminology that I'm not aware of. What exactly do you mean by them?

Paige, Sunday, 8 June 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, no sarcasm or anything: that's a really, really good question.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Millar: Sting is a much more interesting asshole than Dave Matthews ever will be
Ugh. Although I agree completely with the above statement, it still filled my brane with sudden, horrid mental images of Dave Matthews in a tiny white speedo talking about how yoga lets him fuck for 6 hours straight.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i just always assumed he was stoner rock and that was why he is so huge in boulder.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

You have a hard time figuring out how one could characterize DMB's music as "noodley" and "bloated"? Do your ears work?

"Noodley" (or might I spell it "noodly" or conceivably "noodlesque") could easily be applied to the band's ceaselessly masturbatory penchant for directionless "jamming" and soloing.

"Bloated," meanwhile, as used towards DMB could aptly sum up both their elephantine conceit of musical prowess and the overall lumpen sonic girth that characterizes their music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you. We're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view.

paige, Monday, 9 June 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

despite my general sympathy for the anti-Daveness, I remain convinced that "Crash" is a pretty good song whose chorus resolves in a really pleasant way

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 June 2003 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Inevitable Subthread:
DuMB vs Booze Traveller vs Cootie an the Blowjobs...FITE!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 9 June 2003 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Blues Traveller > Hootie (but just barely) >>> DMB

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 9 June 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"I'm the king of the castle, you're the girl with the asshole, crash into me..."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 9 June 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys are completely insane. There's a lot of bands that I don't like, but I don't feel the need to bash them like this. Generally, people who are mentally and physically satisfied with their own lives don't tend to announce everything that they hate. Arguing about something as utterly subjective as personal taste where it relates to music is pointless.

Ryan White, Monday, 9 June 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks Ryan! moderators plz delete ILM

Millar (Millar), Monday, 9 June 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

But pointing out the pointlessness of others' actions is completely fucking worthwhile

oops (Oops), Monday, 9 June 2003 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

oops is on fire tonight

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 June 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ryan, do you see that we're all arguing about our personal taste in music, both those who love DMB and those who don't? And do you further see that, in their staunch defense of their man, the pro-DMB forces have prolonged the lifespan of this argument by about, oh, three days?

Not that ILMers have a problem with this -- hell, look around the board, that's what we do -- but if you have issues with this, why are you still feeding the flames?

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Monday, 9 June 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

(Oh no! Have I killed this thread now? Dammit, Sean, why are you always so rational? Moderator, please delete me from the interweb.)

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Monday, 9 June 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Cuz he's yet to see the light! Embrace DMCB Ryan! Accept the true faith!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 9 June 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ryan , but THATS the point of ILM.

Thomas W, Monday, 9 June 2003 07:29 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the most bizarre thread ... well, in a long time. What happened? where did these people come from? Did someone post a message saying "here is an anti-DMB site, go and post!" to a DMB mailing list or something?

You learn something new every day.

kate (kate), Monday, 9 June 2003 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Its at nearly 600 posts. What is the longest running thread on ILX?

Brain, Monday, 9 June 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably Vice Magazine?

Or anything to do with Momus or any of our trolls...

kate (kate), Monday, 9 June 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually only heard 3 track by them via MTV and i gotta say they left me with nothing to like or to hate. they're virtually non existant where i live. I heard it some years ago and remember it sounded boring and the guys voice irritated me.

Jrvision (visionjr), Monday, 9 June 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd hardly call my disdain for DMB's music "unique". Look around you, Paige.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

But many people like them too. Thats the way of the world. We wont agree on everything. But we should remain civil and respect one anothers opinions. But i dont have a problem with people writing here about their dislike of DMB and other bands as long as I (and others) are allowed to respond.
I do wonder if we could agree on any bands though it should be fun finding out.

Tina T, Monday, 9 June 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I was referring to your "unique" definition of bloated and noodley...which still don't make any sense.

Paige, Monday, 9 June 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

its a Jimi Thing....

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 9 June 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Paige, play fair - Alex's definition of "noodley" isn't hard to grasp, and it's a word often used to describe lots of focus on rock soloing/improv etc.

"Bloated," that one's loaded, not goin' near it

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 9 June 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"noodley"...as in "like a noodle." I cannot imagine how you fail to hear how DMB's music could be described as such.

"bloated" as in fat, inflated, swollen. Think about it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

DMB are bloated - they've forgotten where they came from, they lost the eye of the tiger. That's why the future belongs to DMCB!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

well he did look a little paunchy on that Spin cover.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

In ten years time, will anyone still be listening to DMB?
I THINK NOT!

Regardless of how I feel about DMB, this is a dumb thing to say. EVERYONE who's had ANY measure of success will still have people listening to them ten years after their success. Fact.

Actually, I defy anyone on this thread to list a band/artist who had a hit that no one ever listens to anymore. You just can't do it unless you happen to know exactly what every human being on the face of the earth is listening to at any given moment.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I meant it more in a general sense, i.e. will the Dave Matthews Band still be a going concern, and if so, will they be at all a relevant, viable force as compared to their current status.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

So what would make them any different than 80% of the artists popular today? How many huge acts from 1993 are still relevant, viable forces today? (The ones I can immediately think of are Snoop, Dre and Madonna; most of the other big hitters from then have fallen off big time.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

So what would make them any different than 80% of the artists popular today?

That's my point. They're not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

nice return!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

They're NOT nearly as exceptional as some of the opinions expressed above would have you believe.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a classic example of objective data used in a deeply subjective manner. The fact that the majority of people don't take Tiffany seriously or have forgotten about her doesn't change the fact that there are fans of hers today who think that she's the greatest performer ever. Furthermore, that's completely within their perogative and their rights as music listeners.

This thread has turned into a rote exercize of heaping scorn on other people's musical tastes for the cardinal sin of being different when it should have focused on heaping scorn on poxy Dave Matthews and his frightening chin.
