one cool thing that's probably just a side effect of other changes: shoutboxes for albums
― brimstead, Monday, 21 September 2015 00:48 (eight years ago) link
album shoutboxes have been around for as long as I've been on last.fm. ex. http://www.last.fm/music/Miles+Davis/Filles+De+Kilimanjaro (w/ shouts dating back to 2008). the main difference with beta is that shoutboxes (for users, songs, artists, and albums) are now limited to the 10 most recent shouts, and all shouts beyond that limit have been deleted.

damn, i ought to have known that
― brimstead, Monday, 21 September 2015 03:45 (eight years ago) link
yeah the ten shout limit thing is terrible.
i want to believe that the new site is just presenting a new framework that's more amenable to incremental feature addition (i.e. more stats)... i should care less about this, though
― brimstead, Monday, 21 September 2015 03:48 (eight years ago) link
i should care less about this, though
yeah even though i know that in the scheme of things this whole enterprise is silly and just not worth caring about, the changes still leave me extremely frustrated

looks like there's no way to change your location for events?
― ogmor, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 17:31 (eight years ago) link
I just tried to 'love' a track while it was playing and it disappeared from Recent Tracks altogether ha.
― nashwan, Thursday, 24 September 2015 17:11 (eight years ago) link
Anyone followed another user yet?
― Adam J Duncan, Saturday, 26 September 2015 07:54 (eight years ago) link
Nope.
Yes, I'm still mad at how abysmally bad the redesign turned out to be.
― austinato (Austin), Saturday, 26 September 2015 15:31 (eight years ago) link
I'm very surprised that nobody has taken the opportunity to set up an alternative yet.
― Turrican, Saturday, 26 September 2015 16:12 (eight years ago) link
Am I just being dim or is there no way to just see a feed of what the people I follow are listening to?
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 27 October 2015 22:42 (eight years ago) link
People are still using this?
― Turrican, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 23:55 (eight years ago) link
Yes, but since I feel annoyed every time I visit the site and have to struggle to find anything I want, might be leaving soon.
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 01:42 (eight years ago) link
you can never leave the internet...
― brimstead, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 05:23 (eight years ago) link
is there something else out there which is good for just scrobbling plays?
literally the only reason i still have a last.fm, albeit rarely checked, but the scrobbler barely works any more anyway and that's the only thing i want tracked
― lex pretend, Thursday, 5 November 2015 14:34 (eight years ago) link
I'm keeping an eye on this: http://listenbrainz.org
It's not ready yet, but could be an alternative in the future.
There is Libre.fm as well but doesn't seem to be under development and doesn't support events etc.

Good god. last.fm's "similar artists" feature was pretty much the deepest and most useful/accurate of its kind on the net. But with the new redesign, only 10 similar artists are displayed. Bah!― brimstead, Wednesday, August 19, 2015 5:44 PM (2 months ago)

I also noticed that shoutboxes now only include the 10 most recent shouts (whereas you used to be able to browse through hundreds of shouts dating back nearly a decade)― scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Sunday, August 23, 2015 5:26 PM (2 months ago)

both of these features have been restored/corrected, fyi
― scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Sunday, 15 November 2015 23:47 (eight years ago) link
yeah there are still things i'm not happy are gone (that you could see which or yr friends/ppl you follow/whatever listen to an artist and how much on the artist page was convenient) but for now i'm waiting and hoping they'll eventually be restored.
― balls, Monday, 16 November 2015 00:14 (eight years ago) link
Or just revert to the obviously superior old version.

...and now album cover art for the "recent tracks" list is back.
i too hope they restore the social stuff... seems like a really strange thing to scale back on in 2015

Heads up, you can now change your top artists/albums back to the old "list" format by clicking on your profile page's settings gears.

Cool. Fair play to them - the lists are actually better than the old ones now.

Black artists in the Top 50: Kanye West (#20)Rihanna (#30)
Beyonce is just below the cut, tied with the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish.
I knew the userbase was rock-centric (top 2 artists tagged as funk: RHCP & Jamiroquai) but remind me again why we bother patting ourselves on the back over the crossover breakouts of late Armstrong/Berry/Charles et al? Is taste less segregated now than the days of Louis Jordan and Jimmie Lunceford?

sounds like rym is fairly keen on adding last.fm style functionality, ways away from their funding goal though

It's a perfect combination of passive-aggressive popup and repeatedly fooling you into thinking that maybe you can use the site, then nope!4
Really not sure why I bother using it anymore, maybe I'll stop

Ad blockers are at least a decade old, why is it now all of a sudden that ad blocker blockers are showing up everywhere?
― Austin, Friday, 28 October 2016 04:26 (seven years ago) link
their use didn't reach critical mass or w/e until recently I assume
I've been using noscript for years which is a total pita, esp with all these gggdndtvbey.cloudfront addresses. I can deal with it though, but I wouldn't recommend it if you visit a lot of news/clickbait sites

Did another scrobble-type site/rival ever materialise? It's the only reason I still use last.fm.
― Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Friday, 28 October 2016 10:06 (seven years ago) link
I still scrobble everything and feel vaguely put out when I realise I've done something stats-invalidating (not turned scrobbler on, left work machine scrobbling to itself through a giant playlist overnight) but I don't really know why since I never look at the site any more: too horrible, too hard to find anything, last time I looked it seemed like there was basically 0 chance of finding interesting music or people there any more
I still want to believe, I guess
― a passing spacecadet, Friday, 28 October 2016 10:11 (seven years ago) link
libre.fm (lol..) though i could never get it to scrobble so i gave up
― bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Friday, 28 October 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link
When I really think about it, it's been a slippery slope since last.fm and audioscrobbler merged. Audioscrobbler was at its most stable in the first couple of years!
― pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Friday, 28 October 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link
Just to be fair, it should be noted that last.fm now seem to have got rid of the anti-adblock script.
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Wednesday, 2 November 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link
Also just to be fair, they have reliably fast intensive stats features running for some time now which allow for worryingly deep and detailed dives in your exact listening behaviour over the years, if this is your thing (it's mine).
― the european nikon is here (grauschleier), Wednesday, 2 November 2016 17:47 (seven years ago) link
Click "more tracks" from your profile, the first page of results is a duplicate of the tracks you see on your profile. Great work, I should have to click again just to get page 2.
― rudy githyanki (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 11 December 2016 00:50 (seven years ago) link
this is only true if you modified your profile to display 50 tracks. which is a thing you can do, but whatever.
― fffv, Sunday, 11 December 2016 06:45 (seven years ago) link

I still use Last.fm and associated add-ons to get it to work on different sites, but the site is a skeleton of what it used to be. They have these superpowered algorithms that are not being used at all effectively. What is the sense in cataloguing listens when there isn't even a way to search artists or tracks within them? 'I guess I've listened to [X] about 50 times, so I'll skip to roughly the eighth page' is not a successful search facility. And as for cross-referencing anything with a friend...
I hope they get bought out by some wealthy fan who can restore the site to its former glory.
― dance band (tangenttangent), Monday, 12 December 2016 11:54 (seven years ago) link
At least the app lets you see more than just your top ten all time plays or whatever it used to show. That was totally pointless.

What's the best App for scrobbling from my phone? (Reviews of the official Last.fm make it seem a bit rubbish)

has anyone found a good recommendation service?last.fm used to have a fairly robust recommendation feature that recommended artists by genre which I loved.spotify leaves me cold.
― campreverb, Saturday, 15 April 2017 02:26 (seven years ago) link
Really? Spotify's "related artists" feature is easy to go rabbit holing in for long periods of time.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 15 April 2017 02:31 (seven years ago) link
I was kind of looking to short-circuit the rabbit hole process.
