this seems to be in the same sort of priggish WE'RE EMPHATICALLY CHECKING OUR PRIVILEGE AS A GUITAR BAND camp, except worse because it's claiming to be Journalism, having its cake and faceplanting into it too

I don't like any bandname that is also a placename, but calling your band a placename that has recent historical weight even though you've had nothing to do with it strikes me as...crass. It'd be like calling a band Basra, ffs

algiers is a very large and important city not a village
by recent historical weight you are probably referring to something that happened over half a century ago unless you take more interest in maghrebi politics that would be apparent from your posts

that paragraph is cool and worth quoting but there's something to be said for people calling their shit indie rock bands stupid names just to get a rise out of rubes on twitter etc

still think it's crass

bandnames laying claim to numinous concepts like important 20thcentury placenames or human demographics or professions are almost all shit, give me counterexamples

I like the name Algiers for some reason. It looks good in bold font and somehow I got a sense of their vibe just from the name before I listened to them, which must be saying something.
