there ought to be one or more congressional hearings on the all-round lack of French pop but such is the world we live in I guess

List of people who are ready for woe and how we know this (seandalai), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:05 (eight years ago) link

im sure an 80s poll now would be different (ie have more new order songs)

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

any specific tracks?

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:06 (eight years ago) link

I've just been informed that Pitchfork have done a list of the best songs of the '80s. I love the music of that decade and will defend a lot of it like crazy when I come across folks (and I still do, incredibly) who (wrongly) think that the '80s is the decade that taste forgot. However, I haven't read this list and I probably won't because it's Pitchfork and I don't give a fuck.

Man, you are an iconoclast, one who mocks institutions!

Not that guy! He is a nihilist, one who believes in nothing.

he loves 80s synth pop

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:23 (eight years ago) link

agreed

dyl, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:34 (eight years ago) link

wait so is this list actually important enough for p4k's pageviews that they hosted a "launch party" for it or was that just an internet troll being funny

dyl, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:35 (eight years ago) link

pretty canonical thread: supreme 80's French pop/new wave videos

why are the french so bad at music?

(only sorta kidding - I do like Rita Mitsuoko)

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 22:43 (eight years ago) link

I can't even understand that question

List of people who are ready for woe and how we know this (seandalai), Monday, 24 August 2015 22:54 (eight years ago) link

Pourquoi les français sont-ils si mauvais à la musique?

Οὖτις, Monday, 24 August 2015 23:03 (eight years ago) link

Before taking anyone's opinions on this thread seriously I need to know what 10 songs they'd add to the list and ten they'd remove

Sorry thems the rules

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 24 August 2015 23:53 (eight years ago) link

For the record, I nominated a Debarge song.

Good work.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 00:28 (eight years ago) link

is Frankie Beverly & Maze "Back in Stride Again" on the list? I'm not clicking through the whole damn list but I'm assuming love will tear us apart is in there somewhere. throw that one off and put "back in stride again" on instead

which reminds me, where is "vienna calling"?

officially robbed by pitchfork:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXZanbZ6PWs

scott seward, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 00:48 (eight years ago) link

remove:
david bowie's "let's dance"
michael jackson, "human nature"
janet jackson's "love will never do without you" (it was released as a single in the fall of '90 so come on)
new order, "ceremony"
tears for fears - whichever the fork doesn't mind reducing to an honorable mention
the cure, "pictures of you"
the clash, "the magnificent seven"
prince, "i would die 4 u"
the pixies, "where is my mind?"
de la soul, "eye know"

replace with:
george michael, "one more try"
go-go's "vacation"
the psychedelic furs "pretty in pink"
bauhaus, "kick in the eye"
def leppard, "photograph"
terence trent d'arby, "wishing well"
van halen, "jump"
don henley, "boys of summer"
mudhoney, "touch me i'm sick"
bobby brown "every little step"

da croupier, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 00:59 (eight years ago) link

and that's like, diplomatic suggestions to allow for more diverse in artists. i could also suggest one less new order spot to acknowledge hayzee fantayzee

da croupier, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:00 (eight years ago) link

otm

janet jackson's "love will never do without you" (it was released as a single in the fall of '90 so come on

this bugged the hell out of me. if this qualified where is escapade

lol Maze and Rene & Angela are part of that unfortunate breed of huge-on-R&B-radio artists who don't mean shit to anyone else unless you seek them out (A Street Named Desire one of my favorite '80s albums though).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:04 (eight years ago) link

tbf the list is called songs and not singles.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:04 (eight years ago) link

Including a Don Henley song would require, I don't know, more liberal definitions of what's acceptable in the Pitchfork mind. Michael McDonald gets cool points because he appears on Holy Ghost! tracks.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:06 (eight years ago) link

Don was in the pitchfork 500

da croupier, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:07 (eight years ago) link

Also, the MMcD song chosen is far more famous to 90s kids as the basis for Regulate.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:08 (eight years ago) link

I've spent so much time going back and forth with people in the comments at Slicing Up Eyeballs all day I forgot to see what people on Pitchfork's own fb page had to say. hoo boy

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:14 (eight years ago) link

would add:
debarge: i like it
rene and angela: i'll be good
the blue nile: the downtown lights
chaka khan: clouds
scritti politti: perfect way
teena marie: square biz
donald fagen: igy
imagination: music and lights
the jets: crush on you
anita baker: sweet love

this was off the top of my head so it's probably missing amazingly crucial stuff

idk i'd probably remove all the sonic youth, pixies, joy division, and cure songs, and at least one new order single

I try to avoid the comments there, it's a cluster.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:15 (eight years ago) link

I nominated "Pick Me Up Before You Go Go," but I realize that's not a consensus pick.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:16 (eight years ago) link

oh yeah see i now want to replace something on my list with "you dropped a bomb on me"

anyway of all those "square biz" would've looked great on the pfork list imo

Would add:

Swing Out Sister - Breakout
Rene & Angela - I'll Be Good
Rick James - Coldblooded
Dazz Band - Let It Whip
Frank Beverley & Maze - Too Many Games
Stevie Nicks - Stand Back
Level 42 - Something About You
English Beat - Save It For Later
Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers
Steve Arrington - Dancin' in the Key of Life

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:19 (eight years ago) link

oh yeah fuckin let it whip

English Beat - Save It For Later

Next to Relax, this was the single most glaring omission imo. Lots of songs in the list are interchangeable with others, but that's one that needed to be there.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:21 (eight years ago) link

i have no idea what is on or not on the list, but would add "since yesterday" by strawberry switchblade and remove, ummmm.... motorhead?

dyl, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:23 (eight years ago) link

if it is already on the list, add it anyway so it is listed twice

dyl, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:24 (eight years ago) link

japan "ghosts" also

dyl, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 01:25 (eight years ago) link

killer adds Brad, esp. Anita Baker - her first two albums played a big part in my life in the mid-80s
