So I am finally listening to Hot Chip for the first time ever.

First track on The Warning is fucking horrible. Next three very enjoyable.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 2 April 2009 08:52 (fifteen years ago) link

made in the dark is better, thought stylus always overrated the warning a bit

"boy from school" is their best song tho

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 April 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago) link

"the warning" (the song) is one of their best songs too

strøm thurmond (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 April 2009 08:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Neither are exactly perfect all the way through - The Warning is patchy in the first half and really picks up in the second half and its more delicate moments are gorgeous. Made In The Dark begins awesomely and then they start fannying around with stupid comedy nonsense like The Wrestlers and it falls apart.

Matt DC, Thursday, 2 April 2009 09:03 (fifteen years ago) link

their delicate moments are always the best, i love the ballads on made in the dark

I got both The Warning and MitD for £5 a piece.

What else is worth hearing; early EPs?

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 2 April 2009 09:18 (fifteen years ago) link

First album, Coming On Strong, is really good. Better than Made In The Dark.

nate woolls, Thursday, 2 April 2009 09:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Their entry in the DJ Kicks series is almost worth hearing for their track 'My Piano', classic old school piano house banger.

yeah i love my piano, was hoping the whole of made in the dark would be as good as that

just sayin, Thursday, 2 April 2009 09:27 (fifteen years ago) link

first album is smug duff crud. plus it hung out in my girlfriends cd changer for about 2 years ruining every long car journey in this period. I liked the warning as it seemed theyd risen above the too smart to dance fanboy toss of the first and made a decent sounding album. boy from school had some good remixes. the last one is rubbish though, i also saw them in germany last summer and they were behaving like a bunch of bloody primadonnas because the fat one who hardly sings mic wasnt working

What a whingeing bastard.

"i need a whole album of hot chip and peter gabriel"

it is both better than the VW version and better than any other Hot Chip song that I've heard.

I never listened to A Bugged Out Mix by Hot Chip from earlier in the year, so I wasn't familiar with "Take it In" before now, but a single version of it has went leaky and I'm really loving it.

Next album due in Feb '10 apparently?

They wax and wane in my affections, based largely on how patchy the albums are, but then they come back again with a killer single:

like this myspace video for One Life Stand

Not having Joe Goddard on board can’t have helped

OK so I picked up One Life Stand and like it a lot, but I have to admit that their blueprint is endless variations of Sniff 'N The Tears' "Driver Seat"

'Gabriel' by Joe Goddard is as good if not better than anything Hot Chip have ever done, I think.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

attempting to gauge that statement by trying to remember exactly how you feel about hot chip

Gabriel is fantastic though

I really like Hot Chip, Gabriel is just such an earworm though.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

gabriel is great! we talked abt it on the dfa thread

"gabriel" is kind of unexpectedly amazing O_O

It reminds me of a Basement Jaxx single a bit, albeit a DIY Basement Jaxx single. Love the vocalist, whoever she is.

I'd like this band a whole lot more if it weren't for the singer's voice. Like, when I was describing King Creosote one time I said something along the lines of how he sings in a way that if it were anyone else it would come off extremely wanky and insincere, but somehow he manages not to, whereas Hot Chip guy really really does.

What's that track that sounds like La Isla Bonita? I love that.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:39 (twelve years ago) link

Really? I think Hot Chip dude sounds almost painfully sincere a lot of the time.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 10:40 (twelve years ago) link

painful, i'll give you that. i can imagine it being a bit of a marmite thing. like, technically he's a very good singer, but something about the way he sings gets my back up. can't pinpoint why.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:48 (twelve years ago) link

"over-earnest" is a better word than insincere.

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 10:48 (twelve years ago) link

Is he over-earnest or insincere? Make your mind up.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 September 2011 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

their music makes me think of really bland formulaic graphic design

someone played me a joe goddard album along with something called sbtrkt to demonstrate the kind of sounds she wanted to get. all i remember was that it had a little bit of everything current and fashionable in it. bit of dancehall, bit of pitched down vocals, bit of a disco stomp (the beats were wank). competent, but BORING.

nothing sounded particularly vital or exciting, the dancehall bits in particular bought the lolz, so weak and weedy

i'm sure there'll be a good remix or two tho

Crackle Box, Friday, 9 September 2011 10:56 (twelve years ago) link

i dont think hot chip dude is a technically a good singer? i've heard little but he kind of speak sings mumbles in a fairly limited range

if you play this and then, say, chelonis r jones i think the sincerity thing is really obvious

hot chip is like "this is what we want to do, listen to our attempt at doing it"

chelonis is like "this is what i do, deal with it"

lol yeah i was saying on the dfa thread that i think the fact that its a hot chip side project will stop ppl checking for it

Crackle Box, "Gabriel" is in a different league from his album. one of my favourite tracks for a long time.

jed_, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:04 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the album was not good. It was 90% instrumentals iirc? The vocal really makes Gabriel.

Number None, Friday, 9 September 2011 11:07 (twelve years ago) link

like, technically he's a very good singer

no he's not, lol

also...over-earnest and insincere mean opposite things, right?

i didn't take any notice of "gabriel" at first because it was a hot chip side project (and i don't even mind them) - v thankful their own vox are nowhere near it

xxposts Rather, his earnestness tips him into insincerity. I like one or two of their songs, but I agree with Crackle Box. His voice, and their overall sound, hint at what they're trying to do but fall short all too often. The emotions and attempts at zeitgeist-capturing pop have always sounded like they were knocked up in a brainstorming session called 'Things That Are Cool', ("Shutter shades", I like it, maybe a bit dated but we'll stick it up anyway. Okay, what else?)...

Yo wait a minute man, you better think about the world (dog latin), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:10 (twelve years ago) link

I was just mildly trolling because 'over-earnest' and 'insincere' are kind of the opposite of one another.

I think Alexis (or is it Joe?) has a reasonable falsetto (it sounds great on songs like Boy From School). He can certainly sing in tune, but his voice is kind of weedy and I can totally understand why that would be offputting. I'm put off by it sometimes as well.

I don't really see the point in comparing them to Chelonis at all, I don't think they're even aiming for the same thing.
