Justin Vernon is totally a shady scam or other silly business idea to take advantage of earnest new vinyl collectors.

― scott seward, Thursday, 9 July 2015 20:53 (ten years ago)
They would have totally done the whole "Brothas" thing too, most likely.

Feel like they just sold their banjo and mandolin, want to get back into some real rock like Springsteen and Billy Joel

I posted a month ago about a dispute with this seller on Discogs who sent me the wrong record and then has refused to deal with me (e.g. he said "I have someone who handles discogs for me - email them" but then won't give me that person's email address).
I've opened up a PayPal dispute but they give the seller ages to respond and it hasn't happened yet.
So I just had a (maybe stupid) question about Discogs feedback: If I give him Poor feedback, can't he also just respond with Poor feedback? I have a perfect record and don't want to tarnish it because he's been a dick, you know?
― Your Ribs are My Ladder, Monday, 27 July 2015 14:42 (ten years ago)
He can, but you can then ask Discogs to remove it if you can prove the seller is acting poorly.
Paypal disputes have two stages, you need to manually move it on to a claim if they don't respond after a week or so.
― Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 13:30 (ten years ago)
Ah, thanks. Yeah, the second stage of the PayPal dispute doesn't kick in for a month it looks like. I've put it in the calendar. It's all such a hassle for $20 but it's the friggin' principle of the thing!!
― Your Ribs are My Ladder, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 15:15 (ten years ago)
Sorry, you can no longer leave feedback on this order because it is older than 90 days.
Argh
So yeah, it was Mike Simonetti.
Don't buy from him. Totally ripped me off.
Feedback: You are a creep.
― Your Ribs are My Ladder, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 17:16 (ten years ago)
if i remember, you are not alone with this type of groove, as there was stuff like this mentioned on an old IDIB thread.
shame, as he seemed pretty cool when i had said hello and ordered some IDIB stuff.

Record and sleeve have seen some parties and some fights! Oi! You've been warned, rocknroller! NO INSERT! SLEEVE IS COMIN' APART! POPS AND SCRATCHES! If you play it at 45 you can barely hear them

Dig a little and you find it's not a real record store, but astroturf e-commerce for the Warner Music Group.

Good looking out.

― andrew m., Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:02 (ten years ago)
there was 'gold' cds for a time iirc
― Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:07 (ten years ago)
Indeed there were, and I think there still are. Most of them were made by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab(s?), purveyors of the half-speed master LPs popular with audiophiles in the 70s and early 80s. I remember those gold CDs cost around $30 (which was INSANE in the late 80s), and Sony soon started peddling their own gold MasterSound series. I assumed those gold dealies were all audiophile snake oil, but apparently some audiophiles swear by them.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:20 (ten years ago)
tbf some audiophiles will swear that special cables can rutn dirty electrons into clean ones to improve signal flow or some shit
― bizarro gazzara, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:27 (ten years ago)
i took the bait once and bought a gold cd by the jam and it sounded like shit.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:33 (ten years ago)
amazing fidelity then i guess?
― feargal czukay (NickB), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)
i am happy that someone took advantage of that awesome set-up for a punch line.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
a friend's dad had some gold Pink Floyd CDs that impressed us because we were ignorant children audiophiles
― oh, i am a lonlely poster. i live in a box of posts. (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)
i should have held on to the jam one. people pay a ton for that crap now on discogs.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:40 (ten years ago)
yeah, apparently those are worth $$$:http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELTON-JOHN-MADMAN-ACROSS-WATER-Rare-MFSL-Sealed-Gold-CD-/390032087955?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5acfb95b93
(I mean, for that, you can buy a new CD player WITHOUT an Elton John CD. Win-win!)
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 15:42 (ten years ago)
one of the rarest vinyl box sets prized by audiophiles also happens to be one of the rarest CD sets prized by audiophiles:

― skip, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 16:09 (ten years ago)
Gonna blame all these $30 records for the $45 they are charging for new LPs these days.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)
man maybe i'm just a total sucker but i really thought those vnyl tools were going to have guilt-ridden mental breakdowns, or would be audited by kickstarter, or something. this suggs
― soyrev, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)
So what was supposed to be better about these "gold" CDs? Did they use a gold foil for reflecting the laser, or what?

dvd audio should be the standard for any decent record company. sounds great. when made well. by people who know what they're doing.
