I have way too many of those on cd - not that I'm complaining though
― StanM, Thursday, 2 July 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)
xmas in July! I'm gonna try to dl as many of these as I can before this disappears. thanks!
― Wimmels, Friday, 3 July 2015 02:46 (ten years ago)
I'm going to need a new hard drive! Over the past few hours, I've downloaded about 75% of the non-live stuff here, including albums I already have because I don't have FLACs of a lot of them. Can anyone tell me which (non-official) live albums here are good, in terms of quality of recording, etc? I'm not saying I don't have the patience or the obsession to sit here and dl them all and sort through them later, I'm just saying I don't have the time to do it right now.
I had forgotten how fucking amazing Black Antlers is. I remember speaking to Andrew L!les once and telling him Ape of Naples was my favorite Coil album, and him telling me he thought it was their worst. HA! I guess I just really love this period.
― Wimmels, Friday, 3 July 2015 20:14 (ten years ago)
These must be posted in accordance with sleazy or balance's prior wishes, no? Some of them have been up since February

This was the article that alerted me to it.

for completists: I don't think I've seen these in that archive:
Transparent (1984, reissued in 1997)Gold is the Metal (1987 compilation, reissued in 1996)Love's Secret Domain (2001 remaster)Stolen and Contaminated Songs (1992)How to Destroy Angels remixes & re-recordings(1992)The Angelic Conversation (1994)Philm 1 EP (1995)Moon's Milk Summer Solstice EP (1998)Time Machines (1998)20' to 2000 - ELpH Zwölf (2000)The New Backwards (2008)Time Machines 2 (2014)
Also, get both versions of Astral Disaster: different versions of some tracks on vinyl and CD. Black Antlers vinyl has a bonus track too.
― StanM, Saturday, 4 July 2015 10:47 (ten years ago)
what a great way to spend 4th of July
― sarahell, Saturday, 4 July 2015 20:50 (ten years ago)
Replace audio with movies in MaresNest's link for a couple of live videos (and converted dvds like ANS or Colour Sound Oblivion)
― StanM, Saturday, 4 July 2015 21:27 (ten years ago)
Also, there appear to be more Coil recordings on the site than are present at that link. I found the Summer and Winter Solstice EPs, Time Machines, and ELpH Zwolf by using the search bar
― Dan S, Saturday, 4 July 2015 21:33 (ten years ago)
I guess this isn't happening anymore?

still really enjoying some of these odds & ends, the rarities collections and the soundtracks and that 1999 Zwolf live show...

That page was recently updated + first 8 of the (30-odd planned) reissues here: http://www.forcedexposure.com/Labels/THRESHOLD.ARCHIVES.UK.html
― StanM, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 09:21 (ten years ago)
The recent issue of Backwards seems to have passed here without comment. Unlike these new releases it seems to have been an unauthorized release by former auxiliary Coil member Danny Hyde.
― schlep and back trio (anagram), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 10:16 (ten years ago)
there have been a few unauthorised vinyl reissues recently. this 4 x lp box being the most recent - http://www.discogs.com/Coil-Unnatural-History/release/7038853
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 12:33 (ten years ago)
I feel like I'm a pretty big Coil fan but I am unfamiliar with most of these singles that are getting reissued with bonus stuff. Which ones are worth getting?
― Wimmels, Thursday, 15 October 2015 01:38 (ten years ago)
well I'd say "all of then", but imo the essentials are:
PanicHellraiserWrong Eye/Scope
and maybe The Snow
― sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 02:55 (ten years ago)
then them
the anal staircase > hellraiser > the wheel > panic > the snow > wrong eye. but, even wrong eye rules.
i wonder what the masses of extra material on these releases is? something about it all doesn''t quite seem right.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 15 October 2015 03:35 (ten years ago)
Yeah, it seems strange - demos and such. Of course I know The Anal Staircase (which I love) and Panic (which I've never been fond of), but I agree something seems dubious about all this extra stuff.
My favorite era is the later / Black Antlers / Ape of Naples stuff, but I pretty much love most eras of Coil unreservedly.
So....who's gonna take one for the team and buy a few of these and report back?
― Wimmels, Thursday, 15 October 2015 15:07 (ten years ago)
I already did, expect an update soon :)
― sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 15:08 (ten years ago)
Excellent! I have the Threshold Archives page on Forced Exposure page bookmarked.

Who is in charge of the estate now, a relation? Brainwashed?
― MaresNest, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:39 (ten years ago)
hey look finally some information:
http://www.factmag.com/2015/10/14/coils-reissues-through-threshold-archives/
Update, October 14: Former Coil associate Jon Whitney has confirmed that he is organising the releases.
The Archive also stresses upfront the impossibility of an “authorized” Coil release due to the deaths of both members (John Balance died in 2004, marking the end of the project), concluding that “without Balance and Sleaz, there is no official Coil release nor will there ever be again. Nothing that bears the word ‘Coil’ is authorized, official, or sanctioned by Coil as Coil has ceased to exist.” Despite that, the detail and dedication of these releases is worth the attention of any fan.
not sure what I think abt that
― sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 16:45 (ten years ago)
I believe there have been more updates to the link Stan posted as the revive, this does look legit:
― sleeve, Thursday, 15 October 2015 17:02 (ten years ago)
If Jon's involved I'm good with it -- he'd been doing all this work to try and get things organized. Maybe the subtext here is simply that there is no final way to dot i's and cross t's. I'm really wondering now if there simply wasn't any legal provision for the estates.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 October 2015 17:41 (ten years ago)
I'm ordering all of them, I can't not, I'm a completist :-)
― StanM, Thursday, 15 October 2015 17:59 (ten years ago)
i know little of coil, but i do have 'scatology' on vinyl (due to foetus production basically).
is that not regarded as part of their classic era catalogue as i rarely see it mentioned ?
― mark e, Thursday, 15 October 2015 18:16 (ten years ago)
Panic (which I've never been fond of),
panic is all about its wondrous b-side
and, scatology is definitely classic.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 15 October 2015 20:38 (ten years ago)
Picked up the Backwards reissue at the local shop (where I was frankly surprised to see it). So nice to have a proper release of the New Orleans versions of "A Cold Cell" and "Fire Of the Mind," and the second half of this thing (the half that sounds the most like The New Backwards) is pretty great. But I've always preferred strange / mysterious / beautiful Coil to angry / dark / evil Coil, and some of these are a little too abrasive for me; it may indeed be the bridge between LSD and MTPinD, and I can definitely hear that, but the more NIN-sounding stuff on here (which I realize is like saying "Oasis-sounding Beatles stuff") is decidedly not my favorite Coil material. Interested to hear other opinions.
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:19 (ten years ago)
i totally agree. the abrasive tracks on backwards are probably my least favourite things they ever did. indeed, their hook up with trent reznor didn't seem to bring out the best in them as i never really loved their NIN remixes either.
― stirmonster, Monday, 19 October 2015 15:50 (ten years ago)
Weird uncanny beautiful coil is the coil I like. Faves are Musick... Dark, the Equinox/Solstice EPs, and the very last albums. I know there's stuff in that vein I'm missing (some of which I doubtless already downloaded from the archive dot org dump and haven't got to yet!)
― banned on ixlor (Jon not Jon), Monday, 19 October 2015 17:17 (ten years ago)
^^^ agreed
― Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Monday, 19 October 2015 17:30 (ten years ago)
This is why I watch any 2000s-era live Coil on YT : their use of sound and space and Jhonn B's voice in combination were untouchable in their final years.

oh, bloody hell! i'm going to have to buy my first cds in years and get 6 of these. i will also need to buy a cd player. before i splurge, does anyone know if they plan to do them on vinyl?
― stirmonster, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 22:44 (ten years ago)
Just got all 8 CDs and the Cold Spring version of Backwards in the mail from Forced Exposure yesterday. A little disappointed with the extremely minimal packaging—they're just in sleeves, with no notes or even a tracklisting to speak of—but obviously the music is great. Love the "Pre-Original Chaostrophy," gorgeous.
― spastic heritage, Thursday, 22 October 2015 22:19 (ten years ago)
obviously the music is the most important thing but it feels a little at odds with the whole coil ethos for these to be so spartan.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 22 October 2015 22:36 (ten years ago)
That is disappointing. All of them are like that? I guess they're pretty inexpensive, though I am sure you are like me in that you'd have gladly paid a few bucks extra for a nice booklet, maybe with some liner notes and period pics. The "no tracklisting" thing seems especially weird to me.

OK this cover of "Meet Murder My Angel" is amazing, chalk one up for the 'Wrong Eye' CD
CDs are in cardboard sleeves with no inserts or any track info... the sleeves are glossy, color, and nicely printed. More thoughts later.

...aaaand they appear to no longer be available, jfc. The FE link above is empty.
hope Whitney just sold out of the first run and presses more ASAP

lots of discussion on the Discogs page for Threshold Archives
amazon.com states it will have these for sale at $11.98 each on 13 November, accepting pre-orders. I ordered one today. Let's see.

also the (very very) early version of "Tiny Wings" on the Panic disc is completely goddamn incredible
the extra untitled tracks on The Wheel disc are also really great, essential even
― sleeve, Tuesday, 27 October 2015 14:43 (ten years ago)
Shame to hear a few negative comments on the presentation and packaging, bearing in mind this quote from the archive page:
Thighpaulsandra has stated to me in an email from September 2015:"If your releases are not perceived as ultimately desirable objects they will just be regarded on a par with all the bootlegs. I think the packaging and presentation needs to be of a standard that G&S would have approved of. I tried to ensure the books met their standards. I hope your CDs will do the same."I hope so too...

despite reservations, i'm very much looking forward to my copies arriving (it was way cheaper to buy from forced exposure and ship to the uk than buy in the uk). i cannot wait to hear sleazy's take on "tainted love".

― sleeve, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 14:08 (ten years ago)
these albums deserve a more long term commitment from a label that can keep them in print and available for years to come, this whole limited edition-sold out-jacked up secondary market cycle is shitty and exploitive and cynical. No diss to any individual consuemrs, it's great that people still love and listen to this music, but this short-term thinking, I dunno, I think this is a real disservice to Geff and Sleazy's legacy.
as for that ebay person: "pay your respects to the vultures", indeed
― the tune was space, Wednesday, 28 October 2015 15:01 (ten years ago)
it's pathetic. as someone who runs a label, it really isn't rocket science to do this properly and with respect and love to coil's legacy and high standards.
