Not to pat myself on the back but I kind of want to just retire from the thread after "Making A Name For Myself." I really don't think I can top that one. Nonetheless, a few of today's finds coming up...

That does seem to be the clear winner, way ahead of the back.

This genre just keeps on giving, like film noir or something, pretty much every newly rediscovered example has something to offer.

This is, in fact, a self-titled album - but I would like special dispensation, based on the cover design, to enter it as Valdy and the Hometown Band - Folksinger Deluxe With Side of Fries (1976)

Christopher Milk ‎– Some People Will Drink Anything!

i am hoping against hope that this is not supposed to be a gag about his name being "milk"

ugh

here i am in the land of large breakfasts (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 21 June 2015 03:10 (ten years ago)

Christopher Milk wasn't a person--it was LA Glam band led by Rock Critic John Mendelsohn (whom you might remember his liner notes to Kinks albums and/or his vicious pans of early Led Zeppelin albums in Rolling Stone), his hyping of which diminished much of his journalistic cred rather quickly.

The Rolling "Top of the Pops" BBC4 Revival thread prompted me to do a wiki on B.A. Robertson, where I found out about his debut album, credited to Brian Alexander Robertson, "Wringing Applause":

https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2701/4123428172_162db0324b.jpg

Bizarrely this was released on Ardent Records, and seems to have been at least partly recorded at Ardent Studios, hence the involvement of Terry Manning... yet it was produced by Georg Kajanus, later frontman of Sailor! I want to hear it now!

Love, Wilco (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 22:30 (ten years ago)

Thread has generally been great lately but "Tromboneliness" is one for the ages. I can only imagine it's a whole album of sad-trombone.

BA Robertson's career always seems little incomprehensible but imo it's just that he was a good networker. He seemed to be able to surround himself with super-session men - Herbie Flowers, Davy Graham, the guys from AWB, Billy Livsey, Steve Harley's band and so on. The connection with George Kajanus is that he and Robertson shared the same music publisher, Steve Morris Music. Seems like there is a lot of cross-pollination between a pretty lacklustre roster of artists - Robertson, Kajanus, Stephen Bishop, Yvonne Elliman (who also recorded at Ardent). They recorded each others songs, did a duet or two etc. eg. Robertson did a heinous vocal cover of ABBA's Arrival with Frida on the same album that Stephen Morris wrote a song or two.

It's a little embarrassing that I know even vague details of all this btw.

it's actually quite good... if you like solo trombone improv! think mangelsdorff has a few titles that wouldn't be out of place here.
