Short show!
― Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 03:30 (ten years ago)
Short? She played for over an hour, though it was a good length. Very...satisfied with the show. Didn't blow my mind but pleased me and was a long time coming (to the states).
― Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 12 June 2015 08:16 (ten years ago)
It didn't feel like an hour! Maybe because I'd already seen her full setlist, anything fewer songs would feel abbreviated.
Were you as hypnotized by the drum circle hypnosis as I hypnotically was?
― Falconetti Pot (Leee), Friday, 12 June 2015 17:25 (ten years ago)
Yeah that was my favorite part. I would watch her do a whole set of dubbed out echo-ey drum things. She has done a couple of dub mixes to promote this album and they are very good!

That one track on the album that's a bit Augustus Pablo, that's great that is
― irl friend of the geir (NickB), Friday, 12 June 2015 18:32 (ten years ago)
last night's show was great! a lot of the live tracks were more chaotic/fux0red than the album versions — I loved the rapidfire knob-twiddling at the end of 'I'm Kin' and the chopped-up drum loop in 'This Hammer Breaks' (I was expecting her to use the drum onstage to generate the loop, but she used a prerecorded sample). her version of the Night of the Hunter lullaby (mentioned in the setlist Leee posted) was one of the highlights of the set; she got a cool oscillator effect by bowing her instrument while running her fingering hand rapidly up and down the strings. hopefully she'll release it someday because it seems to be a mainstay in her sets.

It's too bad there wasn't a better turnout, though. I wasn't expecting a huge crowd at the little Portsmouth New Hampshire venue, but she deserved to have more than 30 people in the audience :-/

Thanks for posting that it is really amazing. She has quite a variety of sounds from that very unique picking style!
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 30 June 2015 01:53 (ten years ago)
finally bought her new album and now i'm extra bummed that i missed her show here eclipse and captain of none are both great tracks, and different from anything i'm hearing these daysi like her a lot
― La Lechera, Monday, 27 July 2015 16:03 (ten years ago)
Her sound seems like a sort of stoner-ECM-dub collision, which is not a bad thing at all.

she has the nerve to be totally mild and super weird at the same time, it's admirable
― La Lechera, Monday, 27 July 2015 16:17 (ten years ago)
i'm way into it
― lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 27 July 2015 16:20 (ten years ago)
LL i wonder if you'd like this album? she doesn't have the melodic prettiness of Colleen, but the percussive analog dub parts feel similar:https://leavingrecords.bandcamp.com/album/a-shapeless-pool-of-lovely-pale-colours-suspended-in-the-darkness
― lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 27 July 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)
thx i'll check it out!
― La Lechera, Monday, 27 July 2015 16:29 (ten years ago)
Eclipse is so good.

I said this before somewhere but a lot of it is quite reminiscent of Malian kora music

i have never to my knowledge heard colleen before now, but captain of none is sounding p rad to me right now.

^ yeah! Captain of None was a top 5 record in 2015 for me, excited for this new one
― Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 9 October 2017 17:01 (eight years ago)
From the two new tracks on Spotify, she seems to be incorporating more electronics again.
― Klingon T'Kuvma Why Don't You Love Mah? (Leee), Monday, 9 October 2017 18:00 (eight years ago)
Yeah she’s been talking about this as her synth album on her FB page (which btw I recommend you all follow - full of thoughtful insights into her art and her life as an independent artist)

ooh that cover is pretty
― rob, Monday, 16 October 2017 13:39 (eight years ago)
An old Colleen album is an almost perfect soundtrack for painting a wall Hague Blue (At the weekend, Hood's "Cycles of Days & Seasons" actually *was* the perfect soundtrack for staining a fence in the autumn sunshine).
― djh, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 09:21 (eight years ago)
new one is a beaut
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 20 October 2017 14:24 (eight years ago)

New album is great.
― sctttnnnt (pgwp), Friday, 20 October 2017 16:19 (eight years ago)
Yeah the album is fantastic, just letting it sink in. And she's one of the very few I follow on FB. She's an inspiration. And chose to live in San Sebastian <3
― Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 20 October 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)
This is very nice yeah
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 20 October 2017 19:56 (eight years ago)
and last I heard she teaches/taught English! She is playing here but I have to teach that night ;_;
Someday I will see her. Never thought I would become such a Colleen fan but she keeps being awesome and making music I like so I have no choice.
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 20 October 2017 21:13 (eight years ago)
New one is really good. Extension of elements of the last I loved, but something different entirely. This is probably going top 5 of the year for me.
Textures remind me of a semi-broken music box...underwater. In a great way.

Loving this (Didn't hear the last one ... Should I?)
― djh, Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:17 (eight years ago)
absolutely!! i really love Captain of None. it's more overtly groovy than any of her other stuff imei got the new one on saturday and listened to it twice in a row. it was one of those days when i totally disconnected from my life and just chilled out and colleen was 100% there when i needed her.
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:19 (eight years ago)
Captain of None rules
― nomar, Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:19 (eight years ago)
by groovy i mean songs like this -- the groove is implied, not necessarily heavy drum/bass

― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:20 (eight years ago)
^^i found a new copy of that LP in the discount bin of a local record store that i think is mostly staffed by fans of Beatles imports and which has a Beach Boys surfboard on the wall for 100k. Colleen slipped through the cracks there.
― nomar, Thursday, 26 October 2017 21:23 (eight years ago)
captain of none is her best
― Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 27 October 2017 04:24 (eight years ago)
Haha, weird, I scored Captain of None from a discount bin, too. While wandering through Maine. Great record.
― dronestreet, Friday, 27 October 2017 15:46 (eight years ago)
The new album is really something else. For optimal results total silence is required (in/around the house and in the mind), boy... It's gorgeous. Like swimming with dolphins. "Summer Night (Bat Song)" is the center piece, the be all and end all, both literally and metaphorically. It's one of the harder Colleen lp's to get drawn into, but once she grabs a hold and pulls you under, there's a world down there you couldn't have dared to dream. So beautiful.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 November 2017 22:54 (eight years ago)
It's quite minimal isn't it, with subtle shifts. I really like it, but *so far* not as much as the gorgeous Captain of None.
― giraffe, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 15:04 (eight years ago)
It's very minimal! Echoes of her first couple of albums in that respect, utilising a specific sound and using it very sparsely. Except sound-wise it's totally different from her early days. I'm loving it.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 21:47 (eight years ago)
I'm not getting into the new one, or any of her "happy" albums. I preferred her achingly lonely and melancholy stuff more.
