Upside-down was pretty high on my ballot. I need to listen to May I Sing With Me some more but that's the one that's always really stuck out to me.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 21:55 (nine years ago) link

voted False Alarm, even better than Al Hrabosky

Aight. This is it for today. Already a classic collections of songs imo.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 21:59 (nine years ago) link

"Upside-Down" is one of the most perfect 3-minute rock songs ever, imo. No fadeout, they really stick the landing.

WilliamC, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 22:00 (nine years ago) link

Rock version for the win!

campreverb, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 22:02 (nine years ago) link

I can't even remember "Today Is the Day." I wish I didn't, but I see the title and think of the Smashing Pumpkins.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 22:09 (nine years ago) link

"False Alarm" too low.

During my one listen to Summer Sun, a non-YLT-fan friend of mine asked why I was so disappointed by it. I immediately put on "False Alarm" saying, "Because they used to be this good!" He understood immediately.

I've found myself listening along slightly belatedly (fine selections so far!), so made it a collaborative Spotify playlist.

May struggle to update it in real time myself (timezones, eh?), so obviously feel free...

Speaking of YLT and covers, Luna should totally cover Damage. It's lyrical themes and construction are so similar to Dean's.

excellent images clemenza.

need a few more Mets

also William VanLandingham, if you know the story

i was going to get really excited as VHS is a huge Giants fan (just like me) but then i realized that it's clemenza's images. so are we going to get a bunch of Blue Jay images?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 05:11 (nine years ago) link

so far it's been as diverse as the YLT catalog

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 05:24 (nine years ago) link

No Blue Jays. After the initial excitement of getting the franchise and maybe the first few weeks, I barely paid attention to the Blue Jays in the '70s. They were pretty terrible. I was much more caught up in all the drama of the Yankees at the time.

clemenza, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 12:13 (nine years ago) link

VHS, you are aware that this is a Mets band?

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 15:03 (nine years ago) link

i mean, Bee OK

Is someone doing a Spotify playlist for these results?

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link

i only voted for 5 albums, but i'm still surprised that Popular Songs was last. I think only one cut from that record made my top 25 (Periodically Double or Triple), but I've been returning to it recently and find it solid. Guess I'm the only one?

xp on 'today is the day'

mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 23:57 (nine years ago) link

I might infuriate purists but if I had to show YLT to a new listener I'd go with both Today is the Day.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 3 June 2015 23:58 (nine years ago) link

I'm not even sure I remember John McEnroe having a talk show. Did he often have such high-caliber musical guests?

Oscar Gamble--most famous Afro of the '70s.

(Baseball Afro...Angela Davis and Pam Grier and a few other people had even more famous Afros. I had a decent white-guy Afro myself.)

I voted for "Return to Hot Chicken," but not this one. I can't think of the connection off-hand...both instrumentals, right?

clemenza, Thursday, 4 June 2015 00:40 (nine years ago) link

Never understood the hot chicken thing either, if someone with the knowledge could tell us!

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 4 June 2015 00:41 (nine years ago) link

http://www.roadfood.com/Photos/9370.jpg

They (used to) record in Nashville a lot. Nashville-style hot chicken is a regional thing, and Prince's is a legendary joint. Wait times of several hours reported...it's like getting brisket at Franklin's.
