Noticed last night that Times Change sounds like a follow up to Get The Message w/ the opening talk/rap section.

Yeah, I was thinking last night about how good it would be to resurrect that one for their live shows but use the melodica to play the oboe part.

Think i started a thread on a Time Change somewhere. Always loved that dusky vibe. That one and Some Distant Memory really take me back to my senior year in high school.

A friend of mine took a synth programming course in college, and fwiw, he told me that apparently the oboe is one of the easiest sounds to come up with.

It's a live oboe, according to the credits.

i was a poll virgin when i ran this poll. yes, this was my very first poll i did for ILM. this was also the first ILM artist collaborated poll where i asked for help with the images. i still think Millsner, who i don't even think post here anymore, did one of the best job on any ILM poll. cannot ever thank him enough for helping.

The poll was a joy from start to finish, and I felt privileged to help out. It's obvious that New Order are a special band for many ILXors, so I hope that our love for these songs, the legacy of the group, and their constellation of collaborators still shows through.

One of these playlists has the stupid pump panel mix of Confusion on there which renders a 'best of new order' playlist completely useless. I added both but don't know which one I shuffled this morning, but it was foul. I can deal with the Perfecto mix of World and the Hardfloor mix of Blue Monday, but the Confusion remix was a step too far. Surely nobody voted for that.

Well what do you know. I didn't have Spotify back in the day and when I scanned this thread I didn't see it.

The worst New Order single.

Maybe the worst up to that point, as you say, but looking at the 2CD "Singles" comp, I can find at least nine I like less.

I'd say Jetstream is quite comfortably their worst single overall.

I believe they wrote State of the Nation in a day (or unusually quick) for Pretty In Pink. I don't mind it, but I couldn't defend it outside of personal preference. It's not better than Shellshock, but I really like the intro until Bernard vomits up that horrible lyric. The backing vocal on the chorus is pointless. Despite all the bad, I still like it. State of the Nation is my least favorite 1986 sleeve. Shellshock is my favorite, then BLT.

Yeah, you're right, I thought I had read something in Substance about State being done around the same time but I just flipped through the mentions in Substance and there's nothing there.

Hooky's bassline in this early live version of State of The Nation from 1985 is pretty good. I think it's one of his weakest basslines, which could be what drags the song down.

Not much to disagree with, except with the record-buying public of the UK. How could they not have sent three of the best (in fact, three of my four favourite New Order singles - "Perfect Kiss", "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Run") into the Top 40?

Why does nobody else love "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" like I do? I can barely make it to the end without tears welling in my eyes.

The song or the album? I love both but It seems like that is the minority opinion. Turn is fantastic too.

The song, specifically - the album has a few dodgy moments but the song is perfect, for my money. If only Gillian had been on board, it would have been the perfect elegy for the original lineup.

I do know what you mean, though, 'Bizarre Love Triangle' particularly really should have been a Top 40 hit, especially in 1986. I was just looking at what the actual Top 40 was the week that 'Bizarre Love Triangle' peaked at #56 and it's better than the entire Top 20.

I love "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" (the song - the album is merely OK). The chorus and bridge are really affecting.

this was the first poll i ever run on ILM, now i'm at around 10. i have noticed that the images have disappeared and have been promising to correct that. this poll also started a new trend for these artist ballot polls where there were co-contributors. i did the balloting with the roll out and Millsner did the images for this one. i wanted to get this done before we start the first artist poll for this new decade and ironically it will start at ILM Ballot Poll 100 for 2020.
