Gek i dont know if you read the Wire interview with Kode but interestingly he mentions how much he liked Wiley and Jammer's Sinogrime experiements exactly because they sounded cheapo and perhaps rickety...

only heard this kode 9 album a few times but i find the production a bit 'small' and budget. im all for being low fi and not glossy but that doesnt mean it has to be cheapo.

Yeah, I'll say that as well. This said I'm currently listening to it in a warm office in the morning (though it is raining outside).

Is there such a thing as an instrumental version of this? The music's generally excellent, but the Spaceape (if that is his real name) gets seriously grating after a track or two. He's good in the odd guest spot, but really not for a whole LP.

Dubstep's crossover bid-- whether James Blake's introspective fragility or Katy B's pop hybridization-- is starting to obscure one of the genre's initial strengths: the way it could transmit anxiety.

We are devastated to announce that on Thursday 2nd October, Stephen Samuel Gordon aka The Spaceape, vocalist, poet and live performer, passed away peacefully after a 5 year struggle with a rare form of cancer. He leaves behind his wife Luciana and 6 year old daughter, Cleo. His first release was the 1st release on Hyperdub, 'Sine of the Dub' in 2004 with Kode9, with whom he also released 2 albums, Memories of the Future (2006) and Black Sun (2011). In 2012 he also self-released the Xorcism EP, appeared on the track 'Spaceape' on Burial's debut album in 2006, and also collaborated with The Bug, Martyn, Jerry Dammers, Redshape, Dub Gabriel, the Echologist and more. Last Monday he released his new EP with Kode9, 'Killing Season' including the video 'Devil is a Liar' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dtc4Y4Xyjo which was filmed in July 2014. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends, and all who have been touched by his writings and performances. His Hyperdub family will always miss him.

Just dug up this thread to post that. Really sad news, he was a best in small doses kind of guy, but a really singular voice.

Can't have been much older than 40 right?

this sucks. I haven't always been the biggest fan of vocalists in the context of Dubstep/DnB/other bass music, but Spaceape had such a cool style, it was easy to like.

Aww man, RIP. I don't have much time for his general scene but he was always an incredible booming presence on any record, and his track on London Zoo is just pure righteous fury.

RIP. thats tragic. i actually like the new EP a lot. one of the best things theyve done together imo. and i like spaceape's new delivery.

In about 2004 I saw a poster for a Kode9 and Daddi Gee (which is what Spaceape was calling himself then) show. I couldn't find anyone to go with me so I didn't bother and it's one of my big musical regrets
Also I'm listening to Dubstep Allstars 3 again and I'd forgotten how awesome it is

listened back to this album recently and it's melancholic sci-fi London vibes really pleases me, feel it has aged better than burial's stuff, from that time. Spaceape's mumbly bleakness fits the mood so well
