JFC this fucking Habits song, what an involuntary earworm.

not enjoying it being in my head for four days, tbh.

yeah i really dislike that song. "Talking Body" is great though.

so "cool girl" is super good

j. winters (josh), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)

love cool girl, do you think it has summer jam status potential?

mingalaba, Thursday, 18 August 2016 06:53 (nine years ago)

it doesn't have much time left but i sure hope it gets bigger

j. winters (josh), Thursday, 18 August 2016 13:57 (nine years ago)

yeah i really dislike that song. "Talking Body" is great though.

Am I the only one who finds the line "we fuck for life" to be simultaneously nonsensical, gratuitous and obnoxious? Even as a second language thing it's just embarrassingly bad.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 19 August 2016 01:27 (nine years ago)

i thought it was a somewhat disarming but ultimately great line. do love that song tho, by far the best thing she has done.

dyl, Friday, 19 August 2016 16:56 (nine years ago)

xp I remember watching a video interview where she explained the process of writing that song and it was originally "we love for life" but she thought that was too extreme

art baengels (monotony), Friday, 19 August 2016 22:41 (nine years ago)

That's the version I listen to as the kids like the song.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 19:59 (nine years ago)

p sure the speaker of Not On Drugs is actually on drugs, which is part of what makes it a good song.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 21:36 (nine years ago)

it was originally "we love for life" but she thought that was too extreme

Yes because "we fuck for life"is just so much less extreme.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 25 August 2016 00:25 (nine years ago)

we fuck for SPARTAAAAA!

mh 😏, Thursday, 25 August 2016 02:01 (nine years ago)

yeah it is a weird line -- does it mean marriage? Lifetime fuck buddy privileges? Strange thing to say in a song that's mostly just about lust too.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Thursday, 25 August 2016 03:50 (nine years ago)

Talking Body came on when I was in the gym today and it sounded weirdly generic to me -- the way her voice is produced in particular. Also, the line is changed to "love for life" in the radio version.

spotify's image for her tour is kinda porny and i'm getting the impression that's how she's being marketed/is self marketing now?

Treeship, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 03:23 (nine years ago)

i made a terrible poll about it

Treeship, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 03:23 (nine years ago)

Her voice seems to have lost all its urgency and energy. There's some great songs here - "True Disaster" especially - but her delivery makes everything seem so monochromatic. It made me think of the Liz Phair self-titled album: it's meant to be pop and it's meant to be sexually empowered and feminist, but it doesn't quite come off.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 08:42 (nine years ago)

and I was really sad because the debut was one of my favourites of recent years.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 08:42 (nine years ago)

My kids were also sad as they really liked the first album and there's maybe two on this one that they can listen to #pottymouth

groovypanda, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 11:04 (nine years ago)

I mean, the whole point is that there's no urgency and energy. everything sounds monochromatic because it's portraying everything *feeling* monochromatic, but fortunately the current version of What Max Martin Sounds Like works pretty well alongside that, in a dead-eyed '80s way (there are a lot of similarities, sonically and otherwise, to the weeknd album)

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 15:31 (nine years ago)

I totally get what she's going for! And I really respect that, at the point in her career where she could have really blown up, she chose to make this album and send the message it does. But I wish there was a way that the things I like about the first album - eg the desperation of Habits, the blissful cravings in Not On Drugs - could exist within this.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 18:56 (nine years ago)

i love this album, it speaks to me

josh, Thursday, 1 December 2016 20:12 (nine years ago)

tove lo's lyrics are hilarious, she always sounds like she just stepped off the plane from sweden, learned some american slang and wants to awkwardly shoehorn "feels" and "zero fucks" into her lyrics

Still surprised that "No One Dies From Love" made it all the way up to #8 in the ILM 2022 Singles poll. I now see that it was mentioned in this thread but not talked about that much. I did post the video in the campaigning thread but there was no reaction to it, so I thought it wouldn't even make the Top 77 lol. The best part of the song is "I miss all the cool things we'd do, but what I miss the most is watching movies with you" which is not on the album or first video of the song. Bringing this all up because of the CVS heard out in the wild thread.

From our Top 77 Tracks from 2022 thread:

Very happy this made it, didn't think it had a chance of placing. Not the best song on the album that would be "True Romance" but voted for this as I thought it would have the best chance to place...

― Bee OK, Wednesday, February 22, 2023

pleasantly surprised to see Tove Lo in the top 10 given she narrowly missed the albums list. Agree with Bee OK that "True Romance" is the highlight the way that "Moments" was on her debut.

From the first post in that YouTube posting:

I made True Romance together with my roommate Tim From The House. We both had a need to write something different and dramatic. It took me three days to get the lyrics right but I recorded it in one take. The lyrics are based on the movie True Romance, destructive cinematic love at its best and worst. We shot this scene for it in one take in the desert earlier this year. Kenny Laubbacher has always captured the emotional journey of the song perfectly in this scene.

She's a lot of fun.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 October 2023 22:08 (two years ago)

100% would recommend, although the crowd I was part of skewed very young - it was sold out but I doubt there were more than a dozen people there under 25. She is charismatic, fun and committed on stage, with everything feeling very urgent and breathless. Also: very popular with the queer kids, so it was a joy for me in my 30s to see people half my age out expressing themselves through fashion and social moves in a way that I would never have been able to do when I was that age.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 7 October 2023 07:45 (two years ago)

I went ahead and bought tickets based on these reply. Note they were cheap,so lucky me.

Show was so much fun. I think It was all gay, or seriously it seemed like half of the people there were with their same sex partner. Thanks to those who recommended me going.

The place was packed and she has a very dedicated fan base. She also said it was the last date of her current tour.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 11 October 2023 20:09 (two years ago)

She also flashed us, lol.

Her songs are very sensual and the biggest cheer probably came from "No One Dies From Love" but could also be expected since it closed the show.

I don't know how she doesn't have whiplash from her spinning her ponytail around all night. What energy.

Very young crowd and would love to see her again in the future.
