This ain't Dawn Richard any more either, apparently.

yeah i'm kinda scared of her working more with the fade to mind crew tbh. "honest" is really good but i fear them overly influencing her sound/aesthetic
― j. winters (josh), Monday, 4 May 2015 17:35 (nine years ago) link
that ship has sailed
― r|t|c, Monday, 4 May 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link
she's working with fade to mind crew? Fuck. And the triangle... Still love her, tho, but this Isn't good news. At all.
― Nourry, Monday, 4 May 2015 17:44 (nine years ago) link
Apparently "Calypso" is very ~~divisive~~ among her fans.
― The Reverend, Monday, 4 May 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link
dawn richards is not someone who i would second guess artistically right now; she's driving in her own lane new song is interesting, but very much a demo

the song or the video? always liked the song in the context of the album, think it stands out in a good way

i love the "calypso" video, very bizarre and arresting
― dyl, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 08:29 (nine years ago) link
"calypso" video is way too on the nose w/r/t stuff i've seen in björk and fka twigs videos i think; rev did you mean the song or the video are divisive?
she was working with the fade to mind crew at the same time as she was making blackheart so i hope she can still stay away from their lane
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 10:33 (nine years ago) link
no comment on the triangle
song. half the comments on the youtube are complaints from fans who don't get it
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:47 (nine years ago) link
surely her actual fans have had the song for 5 months already tho? i can see why it'd be divisive to casuals or the danity kane fandom remnant but oh well

i'm glad the "titan" video goes back to her dance roots, but at the same time, i'm sad we came /this close/ to a "warriors" vid and didn't get it. "james dean" is good tho

After announcing this season's lineup for their acclaimed Singles program, Adult Swim is back today to share a new track from D∆WN (formerly Dawn Richard) today to kick off this year's program. "Running From Sane" finds the former Danity Kane/Dirty Money member at her most experimental - featuring a near 2-minute instrumental passage before she takes command of the track with her signature vocals.
Over/under on how long until she abandons the D∆WN moniker and goes back to Dawn Richard?

Like everything she's done since Armor On, it's nice but underwhelming.
Her career bums me out. She's so talented, but also seems to have no direction. She just tosses music and projects out there, hoping something will stick, w/o ever throwing her full weight behind a single project.

Blackheart is fully realized and her best album to date.
This track is closer to the overtones of Goldenheart

“I’m super excited because Ester Dean has the first single. I had an opportunity to really stretch my wings out and I’m gonna bring it back home to what I’ve done mainstream-wise and what I’ve done commercially as a writer and really work with Ester Dean to get a big smash. She’s got me with this monster [hit], so we’re gonna release that. Look for our Summer release of that.

She just tosses music and projects out there
I wholly disagree, I think she and her producers are exploring the shared space between art-pop and R&B, and it's mostly unexplored territory and there's a lot of ground to cover, a lot of possibilities.
― got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Thursday, 11 June 2015 13:28 (nine years ago) link
I smh at people who prefer Blackheart to Goldenheart, but maintain that it's a mix- or master- issue. Goldenheart is perfect songs throughout, but is mixed and mastered like a Bon Iver record, all space and no pressure. Blackheart is all pressure and bop but has such a weak front-half that I'm amazed that people even compare the two.
― got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Thursday, 11 June 2015 13:30 (nine years ago) link
Also I may have already said this but stop if you don't want the song changed forever once you notice Dawn dropping her consonants on "The Deep" you're always gonna hear it as "I took it to the D" which is a fun line to get in your head at some points in your day
― got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Thursday, 11 June 2015 13:32 (nine years ago) link

― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 June 2015 17:40 (nine years ago) link
The front half of Blackheart is maybe the best music she's ever made on her own.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 11 June 2015 20:08 (nine years ago) link
I know that the main reason I like "Calypso" so much is because of the rampant Twin Peaks sampling but still, I really really REALLY like it.
