Miccio - you're kind of right, but it's often where you're from, not where you're at.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

many of its votes aren't just a reaction to rockist dismissals of britney by ppl like rentboy.

whoah whoah whoah, did i just get called a "rockist"???
hahahaha so far from right. take another look at my top 10, k?thnx

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe "Regret" will appear at some point too.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

No chance on "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," I'd say--thirty higher than any Wu song? Ridiculosuly unlikely. "Nothing Compares 2 U" has a fairly high chance. And yeah, no "Come Clean".

I hope against hope I'm wrong about "Chime". It is indeed "one of those classic singles" but I think its reputation has been eclipsed by the other two since. Once again, very hopeful that I'm wronga bout that.

DI vote splitting is a good point, which I think will kill the chances of "It's a Kid's World," "Love Stepping Out" and possibly "Summer's Last Sound," but I think that "The Last Dance" has a reputation strong enough to crossover to the lists of non DI obsessives (such as myself) as well, which I don't think the others have.

"Super Going" is my favorite Boredoms song and the only Boredoms song nominated. If VCN's ridiculously high placing on the 00s poll is any indication, I think their fanbase is strong enough to put "Super Going" into the 20s, but the anonymity of the specific song to non-obsessives (as you just proved) might hurt it too much. It's a toss-up.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:23 (nineteen years ago) link

no "give it to you"

well, yeah. it's clear his dad probably couldn't "stop at all," probably just write him a nice christmas check.

". . . But I'm not sure the American public is in fact that well acquainted with Pulp."

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

'Nothing Compares 2 U' will surely be there.

I know next to nothing about Neutral Milk Hotel, but aren't they more of an albums band? Is this 'Two-Headed Boy' far and away their best song, like 'Super Going'?

'Lazarus'? No way.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm enjoying this bold prediction game.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I just don't see Cali Love as having that untouchable reputation of, say, "Regulate" or "Nuthin' But a G Thang". But it's possible, certainly.

No way on "Lazarus," Scott? Boo Radleys love is strong here, and I thought "Lazarus" was by some margin the consensus Boos song of choice. I could be wrong, but I think it at least has a chance.

I forgot "Regret" in my prediction, stupidly enough. It'll probably make it.

I might be wrong about the two D.I. songs, MiR, but if history has taught me one thing, it's to never underestimate the vote of the corny indie fuxx. And as such, "Two-Headed Boy" is a near lock (and yes, I think it's considered to be far and away their best song, and also was the only one nominated).

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

bill: I reckon that "no diggity" could still make it

scott pl. (scott pl.), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

i really think that nothing compares 2 u will be in the top thirty, as well as black steel by tricky. laid by james is another possibility not yet mentioned.

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd say "Got Your Money" has a very good chance to show up still.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:29 (nineteen years ago) link

I voted for "Got Your Money," "No Diggity" and "Enjoy The Silence" so I'm hoping they'll make it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:30 (nineteen years ago) link

There is no way "California Love" and "No Diggity" are not in the top 30.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

I might be wrong about the two D.I. songs, MiR, but if history has taught me one thing, it's to never underestimate the vote of the corny indie fuxx.
Corny indie fuxx in 90's poll = people who vote based on "moral values" in US elections

(has this been said elsewhere on ILX in the last week?)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

The so-called "corny indie fuxx" silent majority vote usually manifests itself in sweeps for bigger names like Radiohead and Pavement, though. Not Disco Inferno.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually "Regulate" and "Nuthin But A G-thang" seem like locks as well.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

x-post!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

no they equal hitler

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

tracks that i voted for that haven't shown up yet, but seem to have a fairly decent possibility of doing so:

03 Boo Radleys - Lazarus
04 A Tribe Called Quest - Scenario
05 Underworld - Born Slippy NUXX
06 Deee-Lite - Groove is in the Heart
08 Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
09 My Bloody Valentine - Soon
10 2Pac feat Dr. Dre – California Love
16 Daft Punk - Around the World
25 The Cardigans – Lovefool
27 Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money
30 Beck - Loser

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

04 A Tribe Called Quest - Scenario
?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I haven't even heard half of Dr. Bill's predicted top 29 (wtf is Stardust?). I feel vaguely alienated from this poll.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Stardust is Daft Punk being even more pop. It's kind of annoying after a while. I'm still not entirely convinced it will make it.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:37 (nineteen years ago) link

everybody feels alienated, because its a poll. There shouldn't be somebody going OMG THIS IS ME ALL OF IT. Saint Etienne never meant shit to me ("Music Sounds Better With You" is hell) but I'm not gonna cringe about it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:38 (nineteen years ago) link

It's kind of annoying after a while.

nice effect on the vocal though

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:40 (nineteen years ago) link

i think i voted it #29 or something

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Alba, is it that you don't know that track, don't think very highly of it, or what?

I know along with Digable Planets, Black Sheep and De La Soul, Tribe's "Scenario" was fairly responsible for my first "love" with 90s hiphop.
i would guess i'm not alone there, but who knows?

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:41 (nineteen years ago) link

(To clarify, I've heard OF some of those songs, even if I haven't actually heard them. But I'm American and my 1990s went like this: top 40 (1990-93), alt-rock (93-96), indie-rock (96-99). So blind spots ahoy.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:42 (nineteen years ago) link

anthony, I think people are more wary of conformity and hopeful that ILM will show up w/ a top 100 list that shows diversity of taste. I certainly don't want it to reflect my list (although I made mine in a hurry the night it was due and regret a lot of my choices...how did I forget "Come on Ride the train"?!?!) but I DO want it to show a more interesting take on the music of the 90s than say, Spin magazine + a bunch of anglophiles.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:42 (nineteen years ago) link

as i could have expected, this list has too many british people on it

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

xxpost MINDMELD

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

too bad because we're Spin magazine and a bunch of anglophiles

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I was pretty sure that both Dubstar "Stars" and Portishead "All Mine" were going to make it. Now I realize it's not gonna happen. Why is "All Mine" not that popular?

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think "Scenario" is well-known ... but I certainly expect "Low End Theory" to make the albums list.
(xpost)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Rentboy - I'm very ignorant of 90s hiphop, but know of most of the other tracks mentioned as probably still to come. Not that one, though, so in my usefully clueless position, I was suggesting that there's no way it will make it.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

(Miccio, "alienated" is a strong word, obv. It's more that it just makes me feel out of the loop -- and in a way that the 2000s polls didn't. But that's to be expected, because as my previous post suggests, my tastes this decade are a lot more catholic than they ever were in the 90s. Actually, in a way, it's kind of exciting, because now I look forward to hearing these songs I don't know!)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i thought people would be patting themselves on the back rather than complaining that they have more diverse tastes than the norm. Personally I'm happy as long as the list isn't filled with crap, whether or not it matches my own. And these songs have been consistently good.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

People are complaining that there's not ENOUGH diversity.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:46 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck this, I'm just going to get 29-21 out of the way.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I think that "Music Sounds Better With You" is like a 99/100 lock. I can't think of a more ILM friendly song than that one.

Good point about "No Diggity," Scott--that's definitely possible, though like Cali Love, I'm not certain it's a lock. "Got Your Money," like "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," has virtually no chance.

I didn't say (or mean to imply) that D.I. will get the CIF vote--just Neutral Milk Hotel. But they'll get it in spades.

"Black Steel" and "Laid" are very outside possibilities. "Laid" has virtually no chance, "Black Steel" I suppose could happen but is very unlikely.

"Lovefool" could actually be another sleeper.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah. DJD, that's why I said I'm surprised you don't just pat yourself on the back. I was way more alienated by the 00s list, because Radiohead isn't god.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Why is "All Mine" not that popular?
Because popularity-wise, "Dummy" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Portishead"
(saying nothing about the relative quality of the two albums)

The corny indie fuc contingent have probably never even heard "Portishead".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

All Mine is just not very good. Neither is the album actually.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not an anglophile - I'm just British. I can't help it. ILM was started as a discussion board for a UK based website, so it's not surprising that even now there's a terrible imbalance in favour of us.

Is it that it's too British, or just not American enough?

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Why does the 90s list seem more BRITISH, though?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:47 (nineteen years ago) link

(xpost actually!)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll say that so far this is a very cool list. And it might be the first list I've ever voted for where the majority of my top ten doesn't even make the list, I'm actually sort of excited about that. My tastes are usually so canonical.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

cuz Britain's been putting out shit in the 00s.

btw, Gear, you rock for doing this. You had a lot more shit to tally than I did for the OMG poll so I know this was a LOT of work. Good job!
