Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 22 June 2006 04:13 (twenty years ago)

hottER, i mean

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 22 June 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

despite the account-creation and ad pages, this placeis the best i've found for live sets

jergins (jergins), Thursday, 22 June 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

hahaha. susan, you should know better. lf, are you saying my credibility is shot? (that's exactly what i was going for....)

and yeah, i was pretty much trying to make people drool with my underhanded, "i've heard it and you haven't" schlitz. meanspirited, i know. but if it makes you feel better, i asked him for a copy of some of those and he looked at me like i was bonkers. oh well, doesn't hurt to try!

"Where are your troops and can I go count them?"

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 22 June 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

not fair.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 22 June 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

lf, are you saying my credibility is shot? (that's exactly what i was going for....)

not really, i had just never had anything visual to associate with your articles. now i have that scarf! are those really 'minimal glasses?' i was trying on a cheap pair in a drugstore on tuesday.

based on my experience with your recommendations, you are maybe the most credible music critic i read.

lf (lfam), Thursday, 22 June 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

the remix of isolee's 'i owe you' is gorgeous. the original is one of my favourite isolee moments and while villalobos doesn't do anything particularly unexpected (by his standards), by stretching the track out for so long the vocals and melody go from light and almost fluffy at the beginning to really eerie and sinister by half way through and then back again ending in an almost jazzy coda. great work.

Phil, it's sort of like when you talk to someone on the phone a few times, and the other person has an all right speaking voice but nothing too spetacular. Then, you meet the person face-to-face and you're like "Goddamn, you talk like that while looking like this? That is fucking crazy." It's not a bad thing-- just sort of jarring at first. No credibility lost, though I wish you'd update the blog more often.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 22 June 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

they kept it light and almost frisky while thousands danced beneath an Alexander Calder stabile facing the Montreal skyline.

This makes me weep with jealousy.

trees (treesessplode), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

i used to have that experience on the commuter train from SF down to menlo park, when i worked in high-tech PR (briefly, and poorly; just saying "when i worked in high-tech PR" makes me wonder if i'm talking about my own life at all). there was this one conductor who had a total game-show announcer's voice; i mean, dude had talent, a real sense of personality and charisma, simply from the way he introduced the stops. and one day i saw this pasty guy with nondescript features and buttery hair, and the voice was HIS! it shook all my most deeply-seated assumptions. (well, most of them, anyway.)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

"the remix of isolee's 'i owe you' is gorgeous."

I agree, this is awesome.

Philip, you look like you make a living pimping out minimal house DJs.

"I'm not making them do anything they don't want to," Sherburne declared in a press release read out at the front gate of his Majorca hideaway.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Who is the girl with you Phil? I am almost 100 percent certain I recognise her, but don't know how.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

it's Magda

manuel (manuel), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah! I was going to ask, is it someone famous but I mentally scrolled through famous DJs and Magda never appeared in my head.

DUH, sorry folks!

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 22 June 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

he's way better than bolton! (who the fuck is he?)

i wish i were a minimal pimp. it's all about very, very small gold chains.

i've actually been thinking canes should make a comeback - a dandy's nothing without a cane, and minimal has a huge dandy quotient to it.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:10 (twenty years ago)

that's Peter Bogdanovich.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

and minimal has a huge dandy quotient to it.

too true.

the best part (aside from the music) about the villalobos and hawtin set at mutek was the cheer that went up when the sun came out. perfect.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:11 (twenty years ago)

is there a villalobos remix of depeche mode? because that's what i'm hearing in his set at Voltt, 18-2-2006.

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 24 June 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

it's a lengthy version of "the sinner in me" with ample congas.

Jena (JenaP), Saturday, 24 June 2006 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

yep. the only people i know who have it, have it on CDR. and i'm not one of them. wah.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 24 June 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
Get thee to the usual place and download Villalobos @ Awakenings - Amsterdam (just roll down till you see the Villalobos sets.) Missed the set in real time because I don't go to those festivals anymore but maybe I should've made an exception this time. :( What a mix! Crashing ice-cream vans, angry kids, starships getting sucked into black holes, laser fights, passing trains, bass drums that are gone for aeons. Sheer madness.

(that idiot mc who ruined what wasn't a very good Voltt set to begin with must have been tied up somewhere in Amsterdam, Cacaphonix style. ;)

Omar (Omar), Saturday, 22 July 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

tip!

:)

fandango (fandango), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

so is the track at 56 mins one of the exclusives Sherburne crowed about in the Pitchfork Salvador review?

a (rslvd), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

I've been looking for a Villalobos mix like this for some time. Most of them (those Voltt sets, the Green & Blue mix for instance) I found lacking, desiccated house that goes on & on & on...but this is genius.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

Green + Blue is crap. the Awakenings set is closer to the few times I've had the pleasure of 'seeing' him...

a (rslvd), Sunday, 23 July 2006 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

sorry harshaw, i still haven't had a chance to rip the orig. Que Bel Epoque for you, but it seems it's been re-released on this "Frisbee Worx" thing or whatever?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 23 July 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

this is so good. right now i'm thinking ricardo villalobos would make a good dad that's how good it is

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 24 July 2006 05:23 (nineteen years ago)

not in a hyper fandom i wanna have his baby way. more like how its not scary or fun, its all magical! also he'd make sleepytime a breeze.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 24 July 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone know a place for regularly updated Villalobos DJ-dates? Or specifically, is he playing in Berlin some time during the next month?

Also, if the 44-minute track is 4 real- I would sooo not mind if it were that final track on the Awakenings-mix. Sounds like it could last forever and only get better and better.

Also #2, long-time lurker, semi-first time poster. Hi.
