Martin Carr

I Will Always Ask You Where You've Been Even Though I Know The Answer is obviously inspired by The Beach Boys. The first part I wrote after watching The Shining. I love the bar scenes and wanted to write music that sounded like the kind of music I would expect to hear in a bar like that. I don't have a copy so I can't really elaborate more. Fun to do although I don't think there was ever a question of it being on the album.

That was one I barely recalled before this week but which I'll likely be voting for. It's like a 3 minute summary of their entire oeuvre (including bits that were yet to come at that point!)

haha, wrong thread.

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 April 2015 04:51 (nine years ago) link

I believe it is on the Japanese edition of "Giant Steps"

(I have a lot of editions of Giant Steps, from promo to ooh.. I don't got the new 3cd one mind)

Mark G, Saturday, 11 April 2015 08:44 (nine years ago) link

I'll have to dig out that Boo-sides compilation (4 discs) obtained back in my pre-ilx days from Den Teggar or some such..

Mark G, Saturday, 11 April 2015 21:08 (nine years ago) link

I found my own Boo-sides CD-Rs last night (compiled by me from singles I owned) but don't have time to listen to it or anything else for this poll

oochie wally (clean version) (sic), Sunday, 12 April 2015 14:28 (nine years ago) link

(I helped with that comp, I have the "Kingsize" single promo CD)

Mark G, Monday, 13 April 2015 07:00 (nine years ago) link

Heh, I made my own. It spanned about 3 cds as I didn't include remixes/versions of album tracks.

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Monday, 13 April 2015 09:34 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, that's like this one : Disc 4 is "The Remixes"

Mark G, Monday, 13 April 2015 18:43 (nine years ago) link

any song of the day for saturday, sunday, monday, bee ok? the boo radleys mean something to me but i only know a few songs. i love the early shoegazer, noisy rock period that's for sure.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 13 April 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link

Can I post one? This C'Mon Kids-era B-side shows exactly how odd this band could get when they got the chance.

one of their best b-side songs..

Mark G, Monday, 13 April 2015 19:40 (nine years ago) link

Woah - completely independently I was just listening to that (Peachy Keen) and came here to say it shouldn't be overlooked, BUT I was also going to say that 'Furthur' (off the same record) is even better.

I've got it down to about 30 but it's going to brutal making the final cut

(Meme From) Essex Press (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 13 April 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

yeap, that is the reason why i went for 25 instead of the standard ILM 20. i felt this poll needed five extra spots mainly because of their b-sides.

another Giant Steps b-side, "At the Sound of Speed:"

(spoiler alert) ^ that is one of the tracks in my top 30 that currently risks just missing out on my 25, but I really don't want it to

(Meme From) Essex Press (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 08:31 (nine years ago) link

One of my favourites on C'Mon Kids that one.

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Wednesday, 15 April 2015 09:02 (nine years ago) link

i am hella voting for that, they were so great at patching together wildly divergent song fragments and "four saints" is that quality at its best

brimstead, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 09:05 (nine years ago) link

Four Saints was one of the last songs I cut from my list. Brilliant song. C'Mon Kids was still well represented on my list.

Todays OMG b-side

Mark G, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 19:03 (nine years ago) link

That weird little solo in "Four Saints" that starts at 2:28 is one of my favourite Boos moments. I don't even know what that instrument is, but it sounds awesome. It's a great track, and a very good example of what made the Boos such an extraordinary and unique band.

"Nothing To Do But Scare Myself", however, isn't exactly Top 25 material, but it's quite an interesting track anyway. The contrast between the refrain and the other bits always makes me smile when I hear the song.

Tomiboo, Wednesday, 15 April 2015 23:46 (nine years ago) link

what other fucking britpop band was making tracks like Nothing To Do But Scare Myself? fucking no one that's who

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Thursday, 16 April 2015 00:54 (nine years ago) link

^^^^OTM x 1000000000000000000

one thing i have noticed, they really are that good. this poll is going to be so much fun.

please vote even if you only have a 5 song ballot as with any poll i want as many ballots as possible.

Bee OK, Thursday, 16 April 2015 01:46 (nine years ago) link

still working on my ballot, it is going to be so tough to only pick 25 songs.

Bee OK, Thursday, 16 April 2015 01:46 (nine years ago) link

btw, you guys are doing a great job with these B-side songs you are posting, they have been amazing.

Bee OK, Thursday, 16 April 2015 01:47 (nine years ago) link

B-side song of the day, not really this is an A-side but from the single or Learning To Walk comp.

How many ballots have you had in Bee?

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 16 April 2015 01:50 (nine years ago) link

don't really want to say at this point, we are into double digits however.

Bee OK, Thursday, 16 April 2015 02:46 (nine years ago) link

got mine in!

Mark G, Thursday, 16 April 2015 08:17 (nine years ago) link

whatever the results of the poll, there's still going to be a multitude of oddities and moments that won't make it but'll still be kind of essential to the make up of this band. I think it'll be an interesting run-down in that I somehow doubt the top ten will be composed of hits and A-sides

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Thursday, 16 April 2015 09:13 (nine years ago) link

I do, to be honest..

Mark G, Thursday, 16 April 2015 10:16 (nine years ago) link

.. Think so, I mean.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 April 2015 16:20 (nine years ago) link

i'm so upset, finally did my ballot last night but apparently didn't save the excel file. so now i have to do it all over again, i just listened to all albums from Everything's to Kingsize. so i only thought i had to put my Singles/EP ballot together.

Mark G and dog latin, your ballots have been modified.

good reminder, you can edit your ballot up until i email you your conformation. they have yet to go out.

Right, finally got it done. You should have my 25 tracks now, will do the other polls later.

You'll never poll the magic if you don't reach out far enough
Make it wilder Poll the tiger

If You Want It, Make A Poll

but then again, who really cares? I don’t. (dog latin), Friday, 17 April 2015 08:59 (nine years ago) link

The "What's in the Poll?" one is actually quite funny, and the only one of those that isn't absolutely terrible, haha!

Now that we're into the last day of voting, it's the perfect time to mention that there's one Boos cover that we all forgot (that a friend reminded me of)... Here, ladies and gentlemen, is The Boo Radleys (with Noel Gallagher) playing "Live Forever":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqkgQVKn3O0

It's not the greatest of covers in my opinion, but worth a mention anyway.

Tomiboo, Friday, 17 April 2015 14:52 (nine years ago) link

And here's another track that some of you may have forgotten, one that a lot of people may not even be aware of. It's got a nice video and everything!

"Oh Brother" (from the "Help" War Child charity album, 1995)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ8uy6rCmSQ

I really like "Oh Brother" and wanted to have it in my Top 25, but unfortunately it had to make way for other songs.

Tomiboo, Friday, 17 April 2015 15:08 (nine years ago) link

keep the puns coming!
