I have never heard Billy Ocean in anything Dev Hynes has done.

Billy Ocean is definitely a more dynamic vocalist, but I could totally hear him singing over some of the tracks on Cupid Deluxe.

Anyway, back to All That...Brad's right, the added chord changes in the final chorus give me the goosies.

the entire part of this song after the bridge is overwhelming

i think dev is great but this feels like a big step up for him, his songs don't usually go for this sort of big emotional open sweep and i think this totally nails it

this is pretty great and definitely one of the best things dev's been involved with, it's especially nice to have one of his songs that doesn't have one of those clunky drum loops the whole way through

i think the only weak point is the bridge, it doesn't really flow with the rest of the song or seem to reach what it feels like it should be going for? but then the chorus after is fantastic with the added chord changes

I run hot and cold on Dev but I liked his work on that Heems track last month. After two listens though this sounds limp, and my problem is Carly Rae, who can't sell that uninspired chorus.

i like it and it grew on me slightly over a few listens but i'm definitely not instantly bowled over or anything

A lot of times it doesn't make much difference, but we can all agree that Dev has a very heavy hand when it comes to songs he writes for other artists. Like Tedder and like Dr. Luke and like Max Martin and like Diane Warren and Prince and many others going back decades, you can hear the writer coming through in the song no matter who's singing.

i think a legit criticism of dev's calling card songs is that they're very simple and repetitive... but with this one it all feels like a set up so that the chord changes after the bridge can deliver the knockout

tried again, didn't take again, it's a combination of the synth hook being too third-grade music-class major scale practice, the track being thick and sluggish and kind of emotionally null and bowdlerized, and the fact that carly rae jepsen generally doesn't do restrained

and the hook really is something out of a deservedly forgotten A/C hit from 1985

I'm now fully on board with "I really like you" after hearing the LYAR remix of it, which mellows out the chorus significantly, and keeps the awesomeness of the verse melody.

"i really like you" took about a week to be downgraded from a song i thought i liked into a song that was just a bit unsatisfying
