what it loses in 'weird' for the sake of accessibility it makes up for in depth of craft and enthusiasm imo, but yeah I do hope for a whole album of this stuff, with moments of increased intensity

The Max Tundra influence on k-pop is truly one of the examples of quality always finding a way to impact the world. A prophet always being disbelieved in her hometown and all that.

same, and i think it's really selling it short to explain its appeal as pc music-esque

(ftr d&c were on the more obvious part of the spectrum of pop that was successfully critiquing or poking fun at itself, i.e. what pc music has been trying and largely failing to do from afar)

I think that all that was said was that some Max Tundra stuff is kind of a PC Music precursor, rather than the track is PC Music-esque?

Also, judging from his Twitter, he does seem to be a legitimate fan of the PC Music stuff as well.

but yes he does seem to be a fan, i read some of the joint interviews with him/daphne/celeste yesterday and he said that if he were to make a year-end top 10 for 2014 it would basically just be the pc music soundcloud >:|

pretty disappointingly bland to be honest, especially given the lyrics calling out lazy songwriting and this is mainly four chord dirge?

doesn't really take advantage of what daphne and celeste did and/or max tundra's ability. i would love this to be more like parallax error squeezed into a more of a pop sensability but still bursting at the seams. i can imagine something akin to a more "progged out" sophie?

also not into the fact that all the pretty clunky lyrics are so max tundra-ish. fair enough, he's probably writing, but it seems a bit disingenuous coming from two other singer's voice? much like that little shout-out section in you or i alone... that's clearly all in his voice right? or are daphne and celeste also fans of educating marmalade, ariel pink, infinite jest, black dice and captain beefheart etc. etc.?

i love the idea of this collaboration but so far it just seems like a bit of a wasted opportunity for me unfortunately

You and I Alone was good, and they said in an interview that they were fans of a lot of the things Tundra referenced in the lyrics too, but BB is pretty dull yeah

I think BB is not bad - the intro is clunky and awful, but the ooyeah-ooyeah-oohno harmony bit on the chorus is pretty wonderful, and I can't hate a song that uses the word 'heteronormative' in the lyrics. (actually it seems much better when the lyrics are on screen for some reason)

kinda clear that Tundra is trying to get these ladies on the radio again and not just appeal to his own weird fanbase. I think it'll be very good even if it isn't gonna scratch the same itch left by having no new Max Tundra albums in 10 years (what does this guy do all day??)

This doesn't entirely narrow it down, but I understand there was a lot less of that than the average Max Tundra gig. And several ex-ILXors (with mark s)!

I can hear some of the criticisms of the record (though not of BB, whose only fault is that it stops at the point where it was about to really kick off), but it turns out this is the band that pushes me into the tedious "the record is only a crude effort at the songs, the real act is live" camp.

linee's post about the two lead singles seems pretty otm to me. the album's way better than I would've guessed given those two tracks. nothing against them, they work quite well in the context of the album, but the wonkybonkers stuff like "ALTO" and "Alarms" is what I signed up for

critical indifference to this is predictable and irritating

it's really good; I feel like the critical indifference is mostly because it took so long since "You and I Alone"

surprisingly this actually gets better over time. love how it's a throwback not just in the traditional way but also in a stranger sense where it sounds like it's from an era when pop records were eccentric and strange. think "16 Stars" is my favorite track now. I love that "you could almost pretend to/see I'd always defend you" refrain

it's an amazing record tbh but it's as much max tundra's big pop move as anything

yea I didn't know if it was gonna hold up after a few listens but it actually kinda gets better the more you know the songs

Yeah, I wasn't completely sold on this the first few listens, but I've really come round to. It's making a great summer soundtrack right now. I ended up ordering the vinyl as the prices have gone right down on Amazon/eBay. It was $11 including shipping which is an absolute steal.

BTW, does anyone know anything about CSS stuff for reddit? I have r/daphneandceleste - I made it ages ago, but have never done anything with it. So if you have a clue about that stuff...

this album is like if yasutaka nakata produced an xtc record so i have no idea how i didn't get into it when it came out
