tyler does some audible backing vocals on one song ("off top") and left brain produced one song but even the rest of the beats are all earl
i think he's clearly outgrown them (thank fucking god)

dude is doing really interesting, liminal exploration right now; curious to see what his next ten years are.
― Premise ridiculous. Who have two potato? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 April 2015 15:40 (eleven years ago)
been playing this for an hour, goddamn it is good.

is he good live?
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 April 2015 00:47 (eleven years ago)
because right now he might be my third favorite rapper after chance and kendrick
― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 30 April 2015 00:48 (eleven years ago)
I saw him about a month ago and he was pretty bad. Couldn't sustain any energy for more than a song or two, couldn't get the crowd going, didn't even really have a grasp of the basics of putting on a rap show (his DJ fucked up song cues a lot, too). Shockingly amatuerish, all around.
― Evan R, Thursday, 30 April 2015 13:48 (eleven years ago)
Didn't help that it was one of the youngest, most inhibited crowds I've ever seen at a rap show. Lots of gangly high school kids who worship this guy but expressed their reverence with silence.
― Evan R, Thursday, 30 April 2015 13:50 (eleven years ago)
sounds like an indie audience, ew
Couldn't sustain any energy for more than a song or two
found this to be true of the album tbh. dirge after dirge after dirge, a real chore to get through
― lex pretend, Thursday, 30 April 2015 14:07 (eleven years ago)
i'm sure the lyrics are ~really deep thoughts but he doesn't make them sound captivating at all
― lex pretend, Thursday, 30 April 2015 14:08 (eleven years ago)
the whole album is a dirge but it's potent rather than enervated. so oppressive it's tactile, blotting out the space
― ogmor, Thursday, 30 April 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)
It's an album heard in negative

"Grown Ups" still in my phone.
I liked that last album til Things Happened and I lost my entire saved stuff, but I was playing some loosie playlist this morn and ohoho, this stood out, my mother busted in my house midway through and we drunk coffee and ate angel cake, but I noted this one (out of the 3 I heard that day) as the one to come back to, and yeah it's awesome, maybe not if you're into Earl for the rhymes but, that loop was in my skull all afternoon, drinking coffee with my maw and trying to stay genteel.https://soundcloud.com/important_man464/skrt-skrt

“Some Rap Songs” release date 11/30. The last one has really stuck w me so hopeful for this. The beats for the two new songs he released stand out imo.

15 tracks in 25 minutes, amazing
― alpine static, Friday, 30 November 2018 19:50 (seven years ago)
alb is pretty good, need a few more listens for it to totally sink in.
I had no idea that Hugh Masekela was Earl's uncle.

yeah that was news to me as well
― alpine static, Friday, 30 November 2018 22:41 (seven years ago)
this album sounds good, but feels like it's going to be tricky to really dig in and digest ... like it's more sketch pad than album. or something.
Earl rules, tho
― alpine static, Friday, 30 November 2018 22:42 (seven years ago)
find the dude's thoughtfulness wrt his craft very inspiring

interested in the standing on the corner involvement here, those dudes are amazing
― adam, Saturday, 1 December 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)
really love this! have to admit that i'm a sucker for the madlibish production style anyways and Earl is such a great lyricist imo
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:35 (seven years ago)
well sht I might have to get this. I'm always irked by albums with no track > 3 mins. But usually those are like 70+mins long tho anyway!
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 December 2018 16:46 (seven years ago)
The singles didn't grab me on first listen, but they sound better/make more sense in the context of the album as a whole. It's not really an album of "singles."
― days of being riled (zchyrs), Thursday, 6 December 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)
new 7 track halloween release with black phillip on the cover, sounds like offcuts from some rap songs and that suits me fine
― ogmor, Friday, 1 November 2019 13:17 (six years ago)
last three tracks are all genuinely great, better than anything on some rap songs imo
