he has a trio with Chris Dave, who is like the most influential contemporary drummer and is the go-to guy for D'Angelo, Maxwell, Badu, etc.

xpost uh no connection with Radiohead and Glasper, clearly you need to be jazzplained to.

I was being a dick, so sorry about that. but I am still o_O at the idea that radiohead is the primary jazz influence on glasper.
― Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:04 (eleven years ago)
shakey, get on Robert Glasper. One of the great voices of this generation imo; wonderful composer and musician and an important rudder for the future of jazz and hip hop alike.

Xpost no problem, didn't want to end up Radioheading this thread, which is never a good look, just felt the similar vibes with Game Theory.

so "sock" is just ilx's word for "troll" now ok
― some dude, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:19 (eleven years ago)

― flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:35 (eleven years ago)
just listened to Jeff Weiss on his podcast trying to explain for 15 minutes why he doesn't like TPAB as much as everyone else, and it was pretty pathetic. A lot of stuff like "Why is he doing that stupid whiny voice on "u"?"
― Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 17:39 (eleven years ago)
I certainly wasn't implying that Radiohead are Glasper's "primary jazz influence". Don't know about Terrace Martin but the fact that two major contributors to the album are obviously big Radiohead fan boys is a pretty big clue that the primary influence on How Much A Dollar Cost is Pyramid Song itself, rather than some hypothetical common jazz ancestor

Yeah crying 'sock' for the sake of crying sock seems weird to me unless people are gonna start offering theories
― 龜, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 18:55 (eleven years ago)
I think the sock thing came from people pushing a theory that he was Ott
but he's clearly a UK dude who got kicked off Kanye To The

Auk is Tanuki's sock, he's never copped to it and it was an unnecessary add onORAuk is some opportunistic soul taking on the mantle of TanukiORTanuki was always someone else's sock
it's complicated

troll = yes, sock = no
either way all "arguments" proceed from bad faith and false premises so best to move on
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 19:20 (eleven years ago)
ahahaha speaking of Ott i found this in the wikipedia page for Unknown Pleasures yesterday:
Author Chris Ott stated that the album title was likely a reference to Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past.[15]
― flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 19:20 (eleven years ago)
author Chris Ott

"I think the sock thing came from people pushing a theory that he was Ott"
would explain a lot.

i love how some ilxrs try this one on as an insult in the same post as claiming radiohead is their favourite band

"Pyramid Song" didn't even cross my mind when listening to "How Much A Dollar Cost". I definitely hear the similarity in the chord progression and pieces of the arrangement now that it's been pointed out but the orchestration is different and the swung vs straight beat creates a very different impact for me.
― DJP, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:23 (eleven years ago)
jazz artists have been referencing radiohead for YEARS. at least a decade. like since Brad Mehldau covered "Exit Music"

― deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:31 (eleven years ago)
at any rate i don't think that's what's happening on the kendrick record, DJP otm
well jazz dudes covering popular songs is not new, of course. it's just a leap to hear some jazzy chords played by a jazz musician and then assume that they are an homage to Pyramid Song.
― Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:46 (eleven years ago)
apart from the compelling evidence I've already presented in this thread
and the fact that it sounds exactly like Pyramid Song
― Number None, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:48 (eleven years ago)
I mean I don't really care but you dudes are protesting too much

"I didn't notice it sounded like 'Pyramid Song' until someone else pointed it out" is protesting too much?
― DJP, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:58 (eleven years ago)
How Much a Dollar Cost sounds extremely like Pyramid Song, and of course it could be a common ancestor, but this is a record with a song sampling Sufjan Stevens, so I don't think it's weird to think they might be referencing Radiohead as well.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 20:59 (eleven years ago)

Am I the only one that hears "That's All" by Genesis at the beginning of Hood Politics? It's almost like they originally had a sample there but decided to change up the melody a bit and play it live to facilitate the vibe

So what do we make of the fact that both of the rappers on top right now, Kendrick and Kanye, are explicitly Christian rappers - from Jesus Walks to Yeezus and Kendrick's two albums - while in the nineties most of the rap that mattered (Wu, for instance) was informed by Islam? There's a thesis in here somewhere. Has anyone ever written anything worthwhile about this apparent shift?
