Saw them in Hebden Bridge two nights ago. Sixth time I've seen them, but the first time outside Nottingham. Hands-down the best show I've ever seen them do. Never seen Jason so absorbed, intense and fierce.

a review which is original on two different levels

Saw them in Hebden Bridge two nights ago

Dont know anything about this band but last year I lived 3 minutes walk from the Trades Club (which is where I presume this was)

It was, of course, the venerable Trades Club - talk about "core constituency".

The support act, a performance poet, drew a furious heckle: "STOP USING CUNT AS A DEROGATORY TERM". The first song on the SM set list? Oh, I see you're ahead of me.

Yes, at Croft Mill, which was A+. Found the music store slash cafe the following morning, spent a happy half hour there.

amazing show tonight in Manchester. they've got this new one (possibly Bronx In A Six) which has a mentally loud (and fantastic) bass that was giving me major MBV flashbacks.

Surprised nobody is talking about the new one, which has some minor departures (more surreal lyrics in some places; some vocals that are very nearly sung). It's really great

I reviewed it a few weeks ago, and I think it's their best yet: a consolidation and a progression. The Tarantula Deadly Cargo/Rupert Trousers/Giddy On The Ciggies sequence towards the end of Side 2 is particularly killer.

It comes as a relief after the TCR EP; lead track aside, I thought the other ones were coasting it a bit. But this is bang on again.

yeah TCR EP was pretty weak I thought, TIWAS maxi/single EP thing was pretty ok, mostly just because they were probably contractually obligated to eventually title a song "Bunch of Cunts"

i agree but i think too many bands don't risk being embarrassing now

or i like the earnestness disguised as cynicism

in their very minimal, blunt instrument way i think that their beats are kind of amazing and catchy

they have such a limited musical palette that i'm pretty surprised they've managed to last this long

What's a drag, is that there is a cassette edition, couple of hundred, with odd nick-nacks freebies, and side 1 has the album and side 2 has a live gig.

Now, I'd like the live gig, but it sold out in seconds and it's now selling on ebay for around £50.

The package comes with a download for the live gig (only), but no place else to get it.

They were the answer in a pub quiz I was in last week. Sellouts.

Fearn's deciding to not do the whole phony "let me put my headphones on one ear and pretend i'm messing with all these knobs" thing is def one of my fav things about SM

I think they're ironically aware of the Carter USM thing; there's a track on the new album that is somewhat laden with You Fat Bastards.

What really cartered it for me may have been the "Brexity Roller" pun.
