What's wrong with the Weiss site exactly? The pun in the name? I mostly know Weiss from the Shots Fired podcast.

it's more just a general trend, it feels like all the decent writing-heavy rap blogs of a certain era have stupid names (see also: Pigeons & Planes, Mostly Junk Food)

wow, that's impressive !

This album strikes me as a real blue/white dress thing. Opinion seems to be split right down the middle. I wasn't a fan of GKMC - found the production a bit thin and unaffecting, but this album is the opposite. It's totally incredible and dense and so many ideas flying at you. It's super fun. I wouldn't say it was cluttered so much as it has many rooms, many layers.

Did you literally just compare this album to The Dress *leaves ILM forever*

finally getting a chance to dig into this. i've heard the first half a couple times (though in settings where i couldn't pay full attention, and it feels like this record is not one to put on casually), so i started from 'Momma' on, and wow.

sonically it reminds me a lot of 'Things Fall Apart' (album not book), that deep bass + Rhodes sound, super immersive. so is that Bilal doing all the stacked harmony/chord parts that pop up throughout?

Spent more time with it over the weekend and the back half is definitely stronger, and I'm more drawn to it than the rest.

anyone complaining "not enough rappity rap on this here album" is tuning out or dropping off before side two arrives

The reviews of this seem to be pushing Kendrick into the view of unfamiliar audiences. I've heard people of several political shows talking about TPAB (people who don't seem like rap fans at all)

I've found myself thinking some of the album reminds me of Game Theory. Especially These Walls and Complexion. It's no bad thing as that's easily my favourite Roots album.

Yesterday at dinner a good friend who has lost his mojo for new music since marriage + kids said he heard "King Kunta" on satellite radio and was blown away. He's buying the album.

eh his last album was platinum and nominated for AOTY at the Grammys -- he's already in rarefied air, but that was kind of a gradual breakthrough where you see it all in action at once when the follow-up is released.

as much as I love the album I find myself wanting to skip the sprinkled interview that runs throughout the site; one listen through was enough for me and rather than creating tension or even narrative I just find it repetitious
