Thing about Lupe I'll always remember is opening for him at a small private school and after his whole emotional "deep" schtick onstage we were loading our gear into the car & him & the dudes had a line of girls out the door of the bus & were watching an episode of Martin on the flat screen

awesome lol :)

i never understood why a guy named weiss thought it was a good idea to start a site called 'passion of the weiss' and a bunch of other people not named weiss thought it was a good idea to write for that site

i have thought this for so long, lol

bizarrely it reads to me like pop fans who got angry at eg rated r or my december for not having straightforward radio-friendly hooks

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 March 2015 08:06 (eleven years ago)

Lupe has a song called "Adoration of the Magi" on his new album? it's xian rap fever. I like the cover of his new album. ILM people are not fans? i should find a thread. I've never really listened to him much.

scott seward, Saturday, 21 March 2015 12:44 (eleven years ago)

@kurt Woah cool!

Sunnyside, Saturday, 21 March 2015 12:51 (eleven years ago)

Lupe's first two albums are great.

DJP, Saturday, 21 March 2015 16:20 (eleven years ago)

Chitown Guevara tape/kick push era I dug him when I basically thought he was gonna be a Pharcyde/heiro throwback

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 21 March 2015 16:23 (eleven years ago)

Among my students Lupe is either the world's greatest rapper or the most obscure.

I see that Jeff Weiss is also buds I think with Chris Richards at the Washington Post and does some writing there also.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 21 March 2015 16:48 (eleven years ago)

never heard of the weiss site. forgetting it now.

scott seward, Saturday, 21 March 2015 16:54 (eleven years ago)

haven't read it in forever, used to be a pretty good rap blog

flopson, Saturday, 21 March 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

What's wrong with the Weiss site exactly? The pun in the name? I mostly know Weiss from the Shots Fired podcast.

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Saturday, 21 March 2015 17:30 (eleven years ago)

it's more just a general trend, it feels like all the decent writing-heavy rap blogs of a certain era have stupid names (see also: Pigeons & Planes, Mostly Junk Food)

some dude, Saturday, 21 March 2015 17:34 (eleven years ago)

Potholes in My Blog

Jeff Weiss is a great writer, the site has gone downhill since he delegated stuff on his blog to his acolytes as he got more paying assignments

I think this is the longest review I've ever seen on their site

these walls.

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Monday, 23 March 2015 07:02 (eleven years ago)

#1 album in the UK! Beating, um, Mark Knopfler and Van Morrison...

nashwan, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:24 (eleven years ago)

wow, that's impressive !

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)

This album strikes me as a real blue/white dress thing. Opinion seems to be split right down the middle. I wasn't a fan of GKMC - found the production a bit thin and unaffecting, but this album is the opposite. It's totally incredible and dense and so many ideas flying at you. It's super fun. I wouldn't say it was cluttered so much as it has many rooms, many layers.

why dont u say something or like just die (dog latin), Monday, 23 March 2015 15:03 (eleven years ago)

Did you literally just compare this album to The Dress *leaves ILM forever*

, Monday, 23 March 2015 15:08 (eleven years ago)

it's sad, he knew memes

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 March 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

Opinion is split? I haven't noticed.

from my standpoint, there are people who really like the album and there are dummies

DJP, Monday, 23 March 2015 15:13 (eleven years ago)

and the 'this dick ain't free' bit is great, wtf? reminds me of 'cloudburst' by lambert, hendricks and ross or something

finally getting a chance to dig into this. i've heard the first half a couple times (though in settings where i couldn't pay full attention, and it feels like this record is not one to put on casually), so i started from 'Momma' on, and wow.

sonically it reminds me a lot of 'Things Fall Apart' (album not book), that deep bass + Rhodes sound, super immersive. so is that Bilal doing all the stacked harmony/chord parts that pop up throughout?

lil urbane (Jordan), Monday, 23 March 2015 15:26 (eleven years ago)

Spent more time with it over the weekend and the back half is definitely stronger, and I'm more drawn to it than the rest.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 23 March 2015 16:08 (eleven years ago)

anyone complaining "not enough rappity rap on this here album" is tuning out or dropping off before side two arrives

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 23 March 2015 16:10 (eleven years ago)

hat tip to carl wilson for mentioning that colbert appearance. i hadn't seen that. wow!

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 16:11 (eleven years ago)

i should clarify that MUSICALLY the whole album is rock solid (imo)

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 23 March 2015 16:13 (eleven years ago)

The reviews of this seem to be pushing Kendrick into the view of unfamiliar audiences. I've heard people of several political shows talking about TPAB (people who don't seem like rap fans at all)

Is It Any Wonder I'm Not the (President Keyes), Monday, 23 March 2015 16:49 (eleven years ago)

i would think the SALES of the album would be pushing him into the view of unfamiliar audiences.

scott seward, Monday, 23 March 2015 17:07 (eleven years ago)

but yeah definitely the hubbub is probably making people check the album out. people who wouldn't ordinarily buy a lot of rap albums.

I've found myself thinking some of the album reminds me of Game Theory. Especially These Walls and Complexion. It's no bad thing as that's easily my favourite Roots album.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 March 2015 18:46 (eleven years ago)

Yesterday at dinner a good friend who has lost his mojo for new music since marriage + kids said he heard "King Kunta" on satellite radio and was blown away. He's buying the album.

good friend, lOSt mojo

flappy bird (spazzmatazz), Monday, 23 March 2015 19:03 (eleven years ago)

that seems to be a pattern - I wonder why that is

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 March 2015 19:17 (eleven years ago)

I mean obviously this is not yr standard issue rap record, but beyond that

Οὖτις, Monday, 23 March 2015 19:17 (eleven years ago)

eh his last album was platinum and nominated for AOTY at the Grammys -- he's already in rarefied air, but that was kind of a gradual breakthrough where you see it all in action at once when the follow-up is released.

some dude, Monday, 23 March 2015 21:24 (eleven years ago)

as much as I love the album I find myself wanting to skip the sprinkled interview that runs throughout the site; one listen through was enough for me and rather than creating tension or even narrative I just find it repetitious

akm, Monday, 23 March 2015 21:46 (eleven years ago)

throughout the site? wtf. throughout the album.

akm, Monday, 23 March 2015 21:47 (eleven years ago)

these walls is like one of those mythical lost Gaucho tracks that got erased by a studio assistant

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:09 (eleven years ago)
