it's OK if the album isn't great, guys

also okay to not agree with everything being expressed on a great album :)

The giddy R&B show band swagger of King Junta and i remind me of Son of Bazerk

really liked greg tate's review in RS! feel like such a sourpuss about some of those other pieces had to say something nice. that's some good old school Tate right there.

That Tate review is good thanks for the tip, didn't know Robert Glasper played on this.... Freestyle Fellowship is also a good touchstone I haven't seen brought up

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 March 2015 18:12 (eleven years ago)

people have brought them up in relation to kendrick before just bc of the good life vibe

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 20 March 2015 18:12 (eleven years ago)

damn, that's another good one. that's like old school Spin! don't know that guy too well.

x-post

gonna go look up dan weiss reviews now...

scott seward, Friday, 20 March 2015 18:20 (eleven years ago)

It's a less contorted take on what Carl heard in the album.

lol

FF never really delivered on their promise - certainly not like this anyway

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 March 2015 18:33 (eleven years ago)

busdriver otm - i guess i should have said at least in the reviews i read

was interesting, i just listened to the single version of "i" released before the album back-to-back with the album version, they are really way more different than i remembered, feel completely different in tone, album version is so much more aggressive and angry....the "live" conceit is a little much but man it's ferocious.

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 March 2015 18:45 (eleven years ago)

I didn't listen to "I" very much as a standalone single (maybe twice?) so the album version was virtually unrecognizable to me; when it started, it didn't even register to me that it was the same song until I looked at the tracklisting to see where I was.

DJP, Friday, 20 March 2015 18:47 (eleven years ago)

adding "i put a bullet in the back of the back the head of the po-liiiiice" into the chorus of a song everyone said sounded like arrested development song certainly changes the tone a bit

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 March 2015 18:58 (eleven years ago)

apropos of nothing, I've been listening to the "Control" response verses out of (morbid?) curiosity and they all seem to be awful, like the best anyone can do boils down to "he's short!" or "backpackers like him!" or "he dresses funny/in a non-masculine way!"

saw that on my facebook. i don't actually know what passionweiss is.

scott seward, Friday, 20 March 2015 19:50 (eleven years ago)

Jeff Weiss.

Kendrick has a normal rapping voice?

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Friday, 20 March 2015 19:56 (eleven years ago)

The only song that truly works is the most traditionally hip-hop

Weissfight!

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 March 2015 20:28 (eleven years ago)

I think it's 'bully' not 'police'. Genius says so anyway, and yeah, I can't hear any s-sound. But when he was on SNL, I thought it was police as well, and was pretty surprised.

Is the beat for “King Kunta” what Suga Free thinks the Donkey Kong soundtrack sounds like?

what the hell does this have to do with anything

DJP, Friday, 20 March 2015 21:06 (eleven years ago)

i never understood why a guy named weiss thought it was a good idea to start a site called 'passion of the weiss' and a bunch of other people not named weiss thought it was a good idea to write for that site

I interpret this as a compliment

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 20 March 2015 21:42 (eleven years ago)

ok second listen, loving this way more than on the first spin. it's serious btu it's also super fun. the jazzy "this dick ain't free" part is great. production isn't as cluttered as i thought at first either

flopson, Friday, 20 March 2015 22:10 (eleven years ago)

I was on the bus today listening to the album on my ipod and reading through the lyrics on Genius (because it was the first result) on my phone. So apparently Genius has the audio for the songs on autoplay? I got all the way up through Institutionalized before I realized. No one mentioned anything to me. I hope one of my middle-aged fellow passengers goes and googles "Life ain't shit but a fat vagina" and buys the record.

how's life, Friday, 20 March 2015 22:22 (eleven years ago)

Was kinda hoping I'd been mishearing that line tbh

spin review's the best i've read so far

and there is no mishearing that line

I don't know about this album, the song where he says "my dick isn't free" is horrible. Most of the songs don't really deliver, they all kind of fall short. Not a big fan of Kendrick. Gimme Lupe Fiasco instead any day.

Sunnyside, Saturday, 21 March 2015 02:12 (eleven years ago)

okay

DJP, Saturday, 21 March 2015 02:36 (eleven years ago)

take him, he's yours

...DeRo, is that you?

jaymc, Saturday, 21 March 2015 02:46 (eleven years ago)

Actually, no, I bet DeRo digs this album. But he does also ride hard for Lupe.

jaymc, Saturday, 21 March 2015 02:49 (eleven years ago)

riding for who's riding pt. 79

mh, Saturday, 21 March 2015 02:53 (eleven years ago)

Thing about Lupe I'll always remember is opening for him at a small private school and after his whole emotional "deep" schtick onstage we were loading our gear into the car & him & the dudes had a line of girls out the door of the bus & were watching an episode of Martin on the flat screen

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 21 March 2015 03:44 (eleven years ago)

awesome lol :)

i have thought this for so long, lol

bizarrely it reads to me like pop fans who got angry at eg rated r or my december for not having straightforward radio-friendly hooks

lex pretend, Saturday, 21 March 2015 08:06 (eleven years ago)

Lupe has a song called "Adoration of the Magi" on his new album? it's xian rap fever. I like the cover of his new album. ILM people are not fans? i should find a thread. I've never really listened to him much.

scott seward, Saturday, 21 March 2015 12:44 (eleven years ago)

@kurt Woah cool!

Sunnyside, Saturday, 21 March 2015 12:51 (eleven years ago)

Lupe's first two albums are great.

DJP, Saturday, 21 March 2015 16:20 (eleven years ago)

Chitown Guevara tape/kick push era I dug him when I basically thought he was gonna be a Pharcyde/heiro throwback

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 21 March 2015 16:23 (eleven years ago)

Among my students Lupe is either the world's greatest rapper or the most obscure.

I see that Jeff Weiss is also buds I think with Chris Richards at the Washington Post and does some writing there also.
