all the guest verses on this are explosively good
― flopson, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 21:35 (eleven years ago)
Xp: lol, I was about to start a thread yesterday called "slightly more expensive then usual albums"
― a cocoanut rink (how's life), Wednesday, 18 March 2015 21:37 (eleven years ago)
i mean the official digital is $15, right? 'cause he can i guess.
― lil urbane (Jordan), Wednesday, 18 March 2015 21:39 (eleven years ago)
(It was about $15 on iTunes. That same price point has kept me from buying that Beyonce record that came out last year, but I plunked down for this)

― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 21:45 (eleven years ago)
The vinyl will probably come out in July or something. The D'angelo album finally came out on vinyl last week!
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 18 March 2015 21:52 (eleven years ago)
yeah i'm still waiting for my d'angelo LP to show up in the post

he was on npr today too; i think by the end of next week he'll be the guy that everybody who doesn't listen to rap is talking about
― Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 March 2015 05:06 (eleven years ago)
he was, or the album was? just googled but can only find an album review
― soyrev, Thursday, 19 March 2015 06:16 (eleven years ago)
may just have been an album review. got a text from my mom about it of the "isn't this that guy you were talking about" variety.

― Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 19 March 2015 06:55 (eleven years ago)
According to Spotify (and calculations by Hopes&Fears), Lamar probably made between $921,600 and $1,290,240 in twenty-four hours.

I can't see what they're linking to regarding Spotify's earlier record. What album was that?
― a cocoanut rink (how's life), Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:07 (eleven years ago)
on first listen i think the 'ambitious failure'/'its a mess' response is a bit wide of the mark. its not easy to listen to, im not even sure its that enjoyable to listen to, its very proggy in a lot of ways, but im not sure i can begrudge that, or think it fails in whats its meant to be/do. i think it does what it sets out to do.
― StillAdvance, Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:16 (eleven years ago)
it was the Drake mixtape from last month xpost
― Number None, Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:18 (eleven years ago)
Listened to this on the way into work. As a heretofore Kendrick agnostic, I can safely say I'm sold on this record as an instant classic. Is it fair to draw comparisons to the D'Angelo record? Or is that just a cover-connection Definitely a Badu vibe going on too, but this record is extremely dense on first listen, a lot to take in in one go.
― why dont u say something or like just die (dog latin), Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:20 (eleven years ago)
Oh, it was just Drake? Somehow makes it less cool.
― a cocoanut rink (how's life), Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:22 (eleven years ago)
more badu than dangelo, mainly for the producers involved/type of production at least, though obv its much more west coast
― StillAdvance, Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:40 (eleven years ago)
i find the production and delivery A LOT more immediate than his previous records, which always sounded a bit thin and insubstantial to me.
― why dont u say something or like just die (dog latin), Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:54 (eleven years ago)
hmmm i swear that's axelrod but maybe i'm wrong
it sounds a lot like "Holy Thursday" but i'm pretty sure it's not
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 March 2015 10:58 (eleven years ago)
def flashes of outkast, quik, etc but like its all of that stuff post-fly lo/sa-ra/detroit. the rapping is some of the most 'difficult' ive heard on a big rap album in a long time. actually makes me think of eminem (as well as a ton of LA underground guys)
― StillAdvance, Thursday, 19 March 2015 11:04 (eleven years ago)
U is seriously amazing btw
http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/digital-and-mobile/6502416/kendrick-lamars-to-pimp-a-butterfly-sets-first-day
According to Billboard, someone named Michael Buble was the previous Spotify record holder. Now I try to stay somewhat on top of things, but I've never heard of Buble. Did Drake beat Buble too?

― a cocoanut rink (how's life), Thursday, 19 March 2015 14:59 (eleven years ago)
buble's christmas album is probably the most popular in the past decade and it says that that was the previous record-holder (it probably set the record last holiday season or something)
― dyl, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:04 (eleven years ago)
we tried to watch boobly's christmas special on hulu and it was so boring. had to turn it off. and i just kept thinking of the family guy dude when he was singing...
― scott seward, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:06 (eleven years ago)
the bubbly once came into our shop to complain that he was 4 places lower in our album chart in comparison to the official chart, and what were we gonna do about it. I shrugged. He left.
― pandemic, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:10 (eleven years ago)
wow. very impressive. I always had the idea there was no money for artists on Spotify and else... apparently I was wrong.1 million $ : pretty good way to start the week for kendrick !
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:18 (eleven years ago)
i assume you're being sarcastic but buble is phenomenally popular and i guess now that I think about it totally avoidable with minimal effortalso, i would like to hear Kendrick's management's estimate of what he made on spotify as opposed to the company's?
― Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:19 (eleven years ago)
also damn you for putting "beautiful day" in my head now
if you have to break an all time record just to make $1million that's prob shitty
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:30 (eleven years ago)
for everyone else
my sister would like you guys to know that she's been listening to Bubbles since 2004
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:32 (eleven years ago)
but is it an all time record ? I mean, kendrick is big but surely there are bigger sellers/stars on spotify (drake ?)and then there are the sells on iTunes which surely made him some big money too.+ 1 million in 24h is A LOT of money !
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:32 (eleven years ago)
funny, an hour ago a friend sent me this : http://www.skyrange.net/highest-paid-musicians-2014-earnings-per-second
and I was wondering who the hell michael buble was !
― AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:33 (eleven years ago)
i will never understand online $ numbers. i read this recently and it really did seem like peanuts:
Spotify's per-stream payouts for songs played by its users are low. At the accepted industry average of just under 0.4p per stream, 1m Spotify downloads pays out around £3,800 – small beer for a band like Pink Floyd, whose career album sales are counted in the hundreds of millions.
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/jun/17/pink-floyd-back-catalogue-spotify
― scott seward, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:56 (eleven years ago)
though that's songs, not a whole album. still, seems like nothing.
― scott seward, Thursday, 19 March 2015 15:57 (eleven years ago)
that billboard article has a faaaaar smaller estimate for that 24 hour haul
How much is that worth? A Spotify representative confirmed that the 9.6 million represents any stream from the record, meaning Lamar's new long-player brought in about $44,160 in a single day globally, according to Billboard estimates.
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:16 (eleven years ago)
lol
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:17 (eleven years ago)
the confusion that number and hopesandfears' is that hopesandfears is assuming the entire album got played 9.6m times, and billboard seems to have gotten a correction on that front
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:18 (eleven years ago)
and even then the question is how much of that goes right to lamar
― da croupier, Thursday, 19 March 2015 16:19 (eleven years ago)
