Does Nine Inch Nails' "The Day The World Went Away" count?

"the day the whole world went away"

it's always bunby in trilladelphia (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:51 (eleven years ago)

I've always considered the count off of 12XU to be part of the song, but it meets the criteria if you don't hear it that way.

J. Sam, Wednesday, 4 February 2015 23:54 (eleven years ago)

12XU is a gray area, which means more work for me and my dissertation but so be it.

Another gray area song:

30. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker - Prince

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 February 2015 00:12 (eleven years ago)

It's not ad the end, but

31. Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

LimbsKing, Thursday, 5 February 2015 00:12 (eleven years ago)

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 5 February 2015 00:14 (eleven years ago)

36. Minutemen - Maybe Partying Will Help

andrew m., Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:13 (eleven years ago)

Sorry friend, but D. Boon says Maybe Partying Will Help multiple times.

38. Public Enemy- Meet the G that Killed Me

ancient texts, things that can't be pre-dated (President Keyes), Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:18 (eleven years ago)

the "said only once" bit makes this a challenge !

charlie h, Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:19 (eleven years ago)

Indeed. It is hard to retrieve such songs from brain even if one had once upon a time already remarked that they had this property, especially if that happened before this thread or even ILX existed. For example, in theory I could have gone to sleep, woken up and my subconscious would have supplied #38, but I highly doubt it.

Beats By Doré (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:27 (eleven years ago)

39. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode

(unnerstan' that there's a weird Pink Floyd-like constipated robot voice saying something right towards the end)

charlie h, Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:35 (eleven years ago)

arrgh, I forgot that they start the song with 12XU as well as finish it with 12XU!!! I'd say don't count it then.

Vic Perry, Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:37 (eleven years ago)

36. Minutemen - Maybe Partying Will Help

visiting, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 20:48 (four years ago)

"Jigsaw falling into place" is also sung earlier in the song.

visiting, Tuesday, 29 March 2022 20:52 (four years ago)

but the title is only sung once and it's the last words of the song, so it counts

Crap it’s true.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - "The One Who Got Us Out"

I swear this one has been on the tip of my tongue since the thread started, and I'm only just managing to spit it out

Attached by piercing jewelry (bernard snowy), Thursday, 14 July 2022 13:47 (three years ago)

Sebadoh - The Freed Pig.

He actually mutters it sotto voce-like more than sings it though.

gjoon1, Tuesday, 22 November 2022 23:26 (three years ago)

164. Patsy Cline - "A Church, a Courtroom and Then Goodbye"

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 25 November 2022 21:43 (three years ago)

Aha - Train of Thought is soo close but it has a softer repetition and then some other indistinct words

Kim, Friday, 25 November 2022 21:57 (three years ago)

Weezer - Perfect Situation (the rubbish single version with the title shoehorned in at the end)

PaulTMA, Friday, 25 November 2022 22:10 (three years ago)

The Cure "A Man Inside My Mouth" sounds like it fits to me.

The "internet" says there's one more lyric during the outro ("This won't hurt at all") but I just hear a bunch of screaming.

billstevejim, Friday, 25 November 2022 22:25 (three years ago)

168(?) Brandy Clark - Buried

Dan Worsley, Monday, 19 June 2023 11:28 (two years ago)

"But I'll love you till I'm buried" is the last line.

Kim Kimberly, Monday, 19 June 2023 15:43 (two years ago)

I wonder how many songs fit the "My Name Is Jonas" pattern of having the title sung exactly twice, as the first and last lines of the song.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Monday, 19 June 2023 17:09 (two years ago)

Simple Minds - Premonition

170(?) The Clientele: "Claire's Not Real"

Tim, Friday, 28 July 2023 10:43 (two years ago)

I wonder how many songs fit the "My Name Is Jonas" pattern of having the title sung exactly twice, as the first and last lines of the song

"I Got Life" from the original cast album of Hair does essentially this.

Nina Simone's Hair medley, "Ain't Got No, I Got Life," strikes "I Got Life" from the beginning but leaves the one at the end, so it is sort of an example of the original format.

Josefa, Friday, 28 July 2023 13:45 (two years ago)

Which is kind of interesting bc we've already established itt that Hair already has a song that does title once at the end only, namely "Frank Mills."

Josefa, Friday, 28 July 2023 13:50 (two years ago)

Wait, brain lapse. "Frank Mills" is a different thing, it's a song with no repeating lines at all.

Josefa, Friday, 28 July 2023 13:52 (two years ago)

Oh right!

Live and Left Eye (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 28 July 2023 14:20 (two years ago)

Great thread

Funny that it took so many years to ID “Fairest Of The Seasons”

ron zertnert (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 29 December 2025 02:21 (five months ago)

It's probably not what the OP had in mind back in those halcyon days of 2015, when Wolfenstein: The New Order was fresh and new and people were largely indifferent about the forthcoming Doom reboot, but They Might be Giants' "Minimum Wage" technically has the title sung as the last (and first, and only) lyric.

Ashley Pomeroy, Monday, 29 December 2025 22:43 (five months ago)

As the OP, we can count it if the phrase "minimum wage" is only sung once.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 29 December 2025 22:52 (five months ago)

I did write it. It's called "The Overload--Exploring Songs Where the Title Is Sung Once, As The Last Line of the Song"

The Professor gave me a C, he said it was a flawed concept. Oh well.

i thought dissertations weren't normally given letter grades. was this for a phd program or something else? just curious

budo jeru, Monday, 29 December 2025 23:10 (five months ago)

xp I see donna rouge posted “The Fairest of the Seasons” in 2015, five years before I did!
