despite the terrible, terrible schoolboy q bit '2 on' led me to buying that tinashe album, which is incredible.

there's nothing wrong with ScHoolboy Q's verse on "2 On" imo. his verse on the version of "Latch" that a lot of R&B stations play, however, is incredibly awful.

yeah i agree, there's nothing great or especially memorable about it but nothing egregious that disrupts the song in a bad way either à la ty on "my main". i don't think i could actually quote any of q's lines on "2 on" off the top of my head apart from the one dj q used to excellent effect in his remix, which is probably a good thing
― lex pretend, Friday, 6 February 2015 12:50 (eleven years ago)
There's nothing right with it
― Minaj moron (Re-Make/Re-Model), Friday, 6 February 2015 13:01 (eleven years ago)
I don't think the biggest problem with Schoolboy Q's verse is necessarily with the lyrics, but his delivery is kinda disruptive... Like, Tinashe's vocals and the backing track has this subdued, almost melancholy tone, which I feel adds an extra dimension of fatalism to the in-your-face hedonist lyrics... But then Schoolboy Q rides in with your standard aggro/horny, slightly rapey tone, "pull your panties down from under you, beat that pussy up, make you wanna holla Q", and it's just run-o-the-mill rap hedonism, nothing more, so that definitely takes me a way from the tone of the tune... Unless it's all suppose to point out some gendered difference in how they feel about "2 on", but I can't imagine that's what they're trying to do.

― lag∞n, Friday, 6 February 2015 15:48 (eleven years ago)
By itself it's fine but, yeah, I agree the delivery is "disruptive." Lately I take the title more seriously as concept: TWO people on, with distinct povs.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 6 February 2015 15:50 (eleven years ago)
i've come to find the unexpected vulgarity of q's verse in "2 on" oddly charming

i dunno, i like it. switches the track up a bit and provides a foil to Tinashe's hazed-out delivery. I haven't spent enough time paying much attention to the lyrics tho

2014 an incredible year to revisit. One of my favorite years for music in the last decade, no question. The range of styles, the explosion of afropop, deep tech, the ty dolla sign stimulus, thug + keef expanding the grammar of music, rae sremmurd bringing back commercial teen rap, the evolution of chicago drill, the commercial peak of mustardwave before it became clammy and dead, the stuff bubbling with no streaming to channel it. it was so easy to find cool shit! underrated shit, especially. i miss that era of internet and music discovery so much.
