Did you even participate in the tracks rollout once all fucking week? If you did, I don't remember it. So now you jump in and tell people why the way they vote is stupid and how the results mean nothing if people choose to assemble their ballots in a way that's not satisfactory for you. Here's the thing about what happened in that huge metal poll several years ago...I was led to believe it was made up of general population voters, and when all this obscuro shit keep coming up, I called bullshit. THEN I found out it was mostly just the metal crew participating and NOT the general population and I'd already showed my ass by then and I have apologized to Kerr many MANY times and he's accepted it and we've been cool ever since. However, when you choose to bring it up, it's like twisting a fucking knife in my eye and I don't even understand why you did it. So damn right I'm going to get defensive, because for Kerr and me it's old business.

Btw, I never policed the noms in the metal poll at all, and anybody who knows my definition of "metal" could probably guess that. I did quit running it because you were a huge dick to me because you couldn't possibly imagine that the shit you liked failed to place and accused me of rigging the poll so stuff I liked would place (which almost entirely didn't). Yer zillions of apologies must be on threads I never made it to. Have fun running your poll. Grow a thicker skin maybe.

I really don't have any interest in going back and reading people argue "THIS is how you make a ballot" vs. "THAT is how you make a ballot" because I don't care. How you make a ballot is your own business. Campaign. Don't campaign. Vote for your favorites. Vote strategically. Vote only for the things you heard the day before. It's the journey, maaaaaaaan, not the destination.

This isn't the place for this JF, and I'm not trying to throw some huge fit about this poll or its validity or whatever - given my "hey it's ILM who gives a fuck approach" that ought to be clear. People can vote however they want, I just thought it was/is weird to vote for something you've never heard before in an eoy tracks poll. When you rolled in and flipped your shit well duh, I'm going to react. Again. It's Ilx. No one else gives a shit so we should both relax.

That's the thing. Other people obviously take this way more seriously than I do. I make a ballot and I submit it. Then I post the results after seandalai gives them to me. The best part of it is seeing people react to what gets posted and what doesn't. If some people want to treat these polls as if we're establishing ILM canon, then I guess that's okay. I just don't get why anyone would care with such intensity about the right way to vote in one of these polls. It's just missing the point of them entirely.

For me, it's about hearing a bunch of music I wouldn't have otherwise heard (even though I listen to A LOT of music) and engaging with people I normally don't or even just reading everyone else engage. That's the best way to conduct a poll imo. The less you care about the results, the better.

I didnt fill my ballot, so i would quite easily have put in things that i heard in the nominations thread, if i had liked them! But they weren't very good, i think there was one thing in the nominations thread that was quite nice but ive no idea what it is now.

I think i nominated around 15 tracks but it was too many so i just voted for 5 tho in hindsight 7 or 8 is a cleaner number

I haven't been following this tangent closely (or at all), but I find stuff during the nominations process every year that I'd consider voting for (and sometimes do). WHO FUCKING CARES! Two of my tracks votes were for tracks I'd found in just the couple weeks before submitting my ballot. I didn't find them through the nominations process, just through more organic internetting, but I've definitely voted for a tracks I've stumbled across in the noms process before. SO WHAT! This has probably been brought up fifty times already, but these polls really just serve the purpose of getting a lot of people on ilm to talk to each other in ways they don't the remainder of the year. I guess, yeah, it's partly about what places where and what gets 78'ed, but it's mostly the only time a bunch of people who listen to very different things come out of their respective corners and talk to each other. About music. On a board called I Love Music. So nobody cares what process or criteria you use to put together your precious ballots. AT ALL.

fwiw the nominations and voting period combined were 5 weeks, which imo is plenty of time for me to fall in love with something new the same way i did all year long

I voted in the dreaded metal poll this year. It was easy and fun because I listened to something like 200 metal albums last year, taking notes as I went. I've spent so much time in the genre that a new song or album has to be really fucking impressive to upset my sense of the established order. Nevertheless, the rollout (I missed nominations) was FULL of stuff I hadn't heard or had misjudged on a cursory first pass. I came away with several new albums that I'd probably include in my 2014 top 50 if I had to do it again. Maybe that makes me "bad at listening to metal", I dunno. Nor do I care. I had fun, I contributed, and I learned something in the process. Gold star for robot boy.

If that kind of discovery regularly happens with metal, where I do most of my current listening, how could it not be all the more common in unrestricted EOY nominations and rollouts? My familiarity with the landscape of most musical genres is necessarily limited. Therefore, the monuments that knowledgeable people bring to my attention from within less familiar genres almost necessarily seem all the more striking for their relative novelty. This is not evidence of poor listening skills, imo. It's openness, curiosity, a modest awareness of my own limitations coupled with a taste for pleasure in discovery. What we're now calling "special snowflake syndrome" :/

(Ftr my top 2 albums on my weighted ballot were very late discoveries where it was somewhat like how Tim F said, where as much as I loved my then-No. 1, both of those albums had impressed me so much that I couldn't in good conscience say that my no.1 album was better than either. It was actually kind of uncomfortable. So some ppl itt have one kind of integrity and I can have another.)

ps I am pretty lenient w/r/t metal noms, some who dont take part in it are puritanical about these things but not me.
I allow swans,zombi,wovenhand,menace ruine and countless other things in metal poll.

i only had 1 metal album on my ballot this year and i just looked at the metal poll results and it didn't quite crack the top 10 so i doubt it has a chance in the sitewide. alas
