I suspect that the albums roll-out will be a lot more interesting, all around.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the chances of either of you throwing some shit you heard thanks to the eoy nom list for the first time 3 weeks ago in your top tracks ballot is about 0% so uh maybe I won't.

you cool and all, jj, but god, the hostility to the idea that someone might (god forbid) hear a great song !at the end of the year!, !thanks to someone else! is just fucking bizarre
but maybe that's the difference between you serious voterz and the rest of us scrubs out here in tv land...

i put exactly one track and one album on my ballot that i would not have otherwise heard were it not for the nominations thread and playlist:
http://youtu.be/FvDRcYgHy8A
http://verdant-realm-botanist.bandcamp.com/album/vi-flora
not sure if that makes any difference at all but
― gr8080, Monday, 26 January 2015 03:50 (eleven years ago)
that track placed #129 and whatever I had ~spent all year with~ that would have been on my ballot instead would have likely had the same showing
― gr8080, Monday, 26 January 2015 03:55 (eleven years ago)
Right, (and honestly, didn't mean to drag you into this gr8080 it just felt weird to single rev out) it seems so weird to me that a bunch of the super aggro supporters of the "vote for things you hear at the last minute because other people push them on you" in this thread are literally the least likely people to actually do that in practice.

― gr8080, Sunday, January 25, 2015 8:34 PM (25 minutes ago)
that's the thing. i just don't have a sense of us vs. them-ness about the eoy poll. like, maybe there are a bunch of pack rat voters out there who spend the year with their thumbs up their asses listening to neutral milk hotel or w/e, then frantically plough the nominations thread for special snowflake picks at the last minute. fuck if i know, but i suppose it's possible. i mean, there have to be at least a few, right? but i've never wasted any time thinking about it, and now that i have, i find i give even less of a shit than i didn't before.
― A Severus of Snapes (contenderizer), Monday, 26 January 2015 05:05 (eleven years ago)
I never said anything abt special snowflakes! I just think voting for stuff you heard for the first time 20 minutes ago in an eoy tracks poll is dumb. Unless you only heard 25 songs this year and one of them sucked so much that you can move one down a spot I guess. Also I find arguments from some of the most self-assured ILM posters in favor of that sorta stuff super hilarious, because obv those peeps aren't reimagining their ballots at the zero hour, cmon.
― a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 26 January 2015 05:25 (eleven years ago)
Oh and also wrt corrupted or innaccurate, I return to my point that this poll doesn't matter so who gives a shit? It's not like I am offended if the results are off, but in the same vein, people who want to consolidate opinion or make the results "right" are super weird to me I guess? Maybe this is all some new version of "I've never even heard the Beatles" or whatever, but if people who bother to vote in a music poll actually can't drum up a year long list of 25 songs they like out of the thousands of things they've heard without someone spoonfeeding them some tastemaker nonsense after the fact, they suck at listening to music imo.

I haven't been following this tangent closely (or at all), but I find stuff during the nominations process every year that I'd consider voting for (and sometimes do). WHO FUCKING CARES! Two of my tracks votes were for tracks I'd found in just the couple weeks before submitting my ballot. I didn't find them through the nominations process, just through more organic internetting, but I've definitely voted for a tracks I've stumbled across in the noms process before. SO WHAT! This has probably been brought up fifty times already, but these polls really just serve the purpose of getting a lot of people on ilm to talk to each other in ways they don't the remainder of the year. I guess, yeah, it's partly about what places where and what gets 78'ed, but it's mostly the only time a bunch of people who listen to very different things come out of their respective corners and talk to each other. About music. On a board called I Love Music. So nobody cares what process or criteria you use to put together your precious ballots. AT ALL.

Did you even participate in the tracks rollout once all fucking week? If you did, I don't remember it. So now you jump in and tell people why the way they vote is stupid and how the results mean nothing if people choose to assemble their ballots in a way that's not satisfactory for you. And thanks for bringing up the metal poll thing I did YEARS ago and have apologized for A ZILLION TIMES. Cool move, dickface. Go pet your dog.

― Dinsdale, Monday, 26 January 2015 06:25 (eleven years ago)
I mean, this poll is purposely the most loosely policed one there is with regards to what's eligible and what's not. There are no "that's not metal enough!" restrictions, or any other genre. All we ask is that it be released in the year we're polling, or have made significant impact in that year and that it not be a flat reissue with no new content. That's it. That's why the nominations list is so large. That's why so much music is covered. That's why we get a shit ton of voters. Maybe you get a truer artifact of any given year if you police the fuck out of it, but that's not what this is about at all.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 January 2015 06:28 (eleven years ago)
Dinsdale, since I don't even know who the fuck you are, I'd be happy to keep it that way.

― Dinsdale, Monday, 26 January 2015 06:34 (eleven years ago)
Here's the thing about what happened in that huge metal poll several years ago...I was led to believe it was made up of general population voters, and when all this obscuro shit keep coming up, I called bullshit. THEN I found out it was mostly just the metal crew participating and NOT the general population and I'd already showed my ass by then and I have apologized to Kerr many MANY times and he's accepted it and we've been cool ever since. However, when you choose to bring it up, it's like twisting a fucking knife in my eye and I don't even understand why you did it. So damn right I'm going to get defensive, because for Kerr and me it's old business.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 January 2015 06:37 (eleven years ago)
Btw, I never policed the noms in the metal poll at all, and anybody who knows my definition of "metal" could probably guess that. I did quit running it because you were a huge dick to me because you couldn't possibly imagine that the shit you liked failed to place and accused me of rigging the poll so stuff I liked would place (which almost entirely didn't). Yer zillions of apologies must be on threads I never made it to. Have fun running your poll. Grow a thicker skin maybe.

I really don't have any interest in going back and reading people argue "THIS is how you make a ballot" vs. "THAT is how you make a ballot" because I don't care. How you make a ballot is your own business. Campaign. Don't campaign. Vote for your favorites. Vote strategically. Vote only for the things you heard the day before. It's the journey, maaaaaaaan, not the destination.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 January 2015 06:54 (eleven years ago)
This isn't the place for this JF, and I'm not trying to throw some huge fit about this poll or its validity or whatever - given my "hey it's ILM who gives a fuck approach" that ought to be clear. People can vote however they want, I just thought it was/is weird to vote for something you've never heard before in an eoy tracks poll. When you rolled in and flipped your shit well duh, I'm going to react. Again. It's Ilx. No one else gives a shit so we should both relax.
Also I am totally and literally petting my dog, just fyi.
