re: voting for stuff at the last minute because of the noms, there's nothing wrong with that but I think what would be super super awesome is if the noms didn't start at the end of the year but instead they would start right now. Ideally there would be rolling charts to go along with it as people rate the things they listen to. Basically RateYourMusic but limited to ILX. So no more not voting for stuff because it's not gonna place, not more having to cut that because you can only vote for 25 etc. and probably a cool way to highlight/discover niche stuff that would otherwise be overlooked. It's just too bad RYM doesn't let you create a group of users and limit charts to said group otherwise that could be easily done. Hell a that's not even particularly complicated to code but I doubt I'll have the time to do it myself.

Dinsdale, Sunday, 25 January 2015 10:09 (eleven years ago)

Actually I think this can be done via RYM's friends feature. It would take one neutral/inactive account to act as master who would add all ILXors participants as friends, then we'd just have to use the 'as rated by my friends' option in the charts form.

Dinsdale, Sunday, 25 January 2015 10:15 (eleven years ago)

Eh this is still going, save us JF etc etc. The Pitchfork/P+J placings are just part of the theatre for me, nobody really believes that our list has a comparable (or any) influence in the outside world but it can be entertaining to pretend for a week that it does. Likewise hoping for a deserving winner and the other horserace aspects - if something I like is in the frame I'll cheer it on but it has zero impact on how I vote.

seandalai, Sunday, 25 January 2015 11:26 (eleven years ago)

do people really think that these results have been gamed and are no longer an accurate representation of stuff liked by people on this board in 2014? cause I'm looking at the list now and uhhhhh

o.m.g. lol @ hurt butt (wins), Sunday, 25 January 2015 11:32 (eleven years ago)

I do share my list outside of here. Wouldn't tactically vote per se but would maybe say there's a conscious urge to make the 25 representative of the scope of yr listening rather than have 12 songs from 2 adored albums you've caned all year.

Weirdest thing about this discussion is ppl sneering at & grilling contendo as to why he was voting for consensus picks when he didn't even submit a ballot (yeah I know he made a semi-aggro comment to flopson about wizards but still)

Anyways, voter participation has been growing somewhat steadily for the past few years, and I kinda feel like our special snowflake status is a big part of the reason why

clearly i didn't vote with my heart & i'm just a mastermind here to make ILX look cooler

Does the dreaded metal poll even have this handwringing?
Things are bad when the metal fans come out looking better than you.

lotta handwringing when swans place iirc

Sund4r otm. Listening thru the noms is crucial to discovering stuff I will like. It made for a really fun couple of weeks. It turned my ballot from a parochial affair to a truer reflection of what I would have liked given the chance to hear everything. I believe many people feel the same way. Flopson your argument is ludicrous imo #notsorry

ear sirrom (imago), Sunday, 25 January 2015 14:35 (eleven years ago)

I believe that flopson is in fact projecting his subconscious dissatisfaction at NOT giving the noms a thorough airing, tbh

ear sirrom (imago), Sunday, 25 January 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)

Maybe the nominations list is the artifact of true archival value that emerges from EOY and the top 77 is just the summary of the most important points.

seandalai, Sunday, 25 January 2015 14:39 (eleven years ago)

Few of us (forks aside) have the fortitude to listen to every nomination but every year I do discover music that - whether or not it goes on my ballot - sticks with me, by listening to the noms list on shuffle.

seandalai, Sunday, 25 January 2015 14:42 (eleven years ago)

maybe the noms are... the true results

lag∞n, Sunday, 25 January 2015 15:22 (eleven years ago)

next time we should forego the countdown & just have a spotify playlist and an argument

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the chances of either of you throwing some shit you heard thanks to the eoy nom list for the first time 3 weeks ago in your top tracks ballot is about 0% so uh maybe I won't.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 26 January 2015 03:39 (eleven years ago)

you cool and all, jj, but god, the hostility to the idea that someone might (god forbid) hear a great song !at the end of the year!, !thanks to someone else! is just fucking bizarre

but maybe that's the difference between you serious voterz and the rest of us scrubs out here in tv land...

A Severus of Snapes (contenderizer), Monday, 26 January 2015 03:50 (eleven years ago)

i put exactly one track and one album on my ballot that i would not have otherwise heard were it not for the nominations thread and playlist:

http://youtu.be/FvDRcYgHy8A

http://verdant-realm-botanist.bandcamp.com/album/vi-flora

not sure if that makes any difference at all but

gr8080, Monday, 26 January 2015 03:50 (eleven years ago)

that track placed #129 and whatever I had ~spent all year with~ that would have been on my ballot instead would have likely had the same showing

gr8080, Monday, 26 January 2015 03:55 (eleven years ago)

Right, (and honestly, didn't mean to drag you into this gr8080 it just felt weird to single rev out) it seems so weird to me that a bunch of the super aggro supporters of the "vote for things you hear at the last minute because other people push them on you" in this thread are literally the least likely people to actually do that in practice.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 26 January 2015 04:06 (eleven years ago)

is it too late to vote for tracks

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 26 January 2015 04:30 (eleven years ago)

5. Davido "Owo Ni Koko"
4. Chief Keef "Earned it"

xposts to jjj: sure but like, what's your point? who are these boogeyman posters assembling disingenuous ballots in order to feel like special snowflakes? are there enough of them that our top 77 tracks are inaccurate or corrupted?

gr8080, Monday, 26 January 2015 04:34 (eleven years ago)

i want to vote too

― gr8080, Sunday, January 25, 2015 8:34 PM (25 minutes ago)

that's the thing. i just don't have a sense of us vs. them-ness about the eoy poll. like, maybe there are a bunch of pack rat voters out there who spend the year with their thumbs up their asses listening to neutral milk hotel or w/e, then frantically plough the nominations thread for special snowflake picks at the last minute. fuck if i know, but i suppose it's possible. i mean, there have to be at least a few, right? but i've never wasted any time thinking about it, and now that i have, i find i give even less of a shit than i didn't before.

A Severus of Snapes (contenderizer), Monday, 26 January 2015 05:05 (eleven years ago)

I never said anything abt special snowflakes! I just think voting for stuff you heard for the first time 20 minutes ago in an eoy tracks poll is dumb. Unless you only heard 25 songs this year and one of them sucked so much that you can move one down a spot I guess. Also I find arguments from some of the most self-assured ILM posters in favor of that sorta stuff super hilarious, because obv those peeps aren't reimagining their ballots at the zero hour, cmon.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 26 January 2015 05:25 (eleven years ago)

Oh and also wrt corrupted or innaccurate, I return to my point that this poll doesn't matter so who gives a shit? It's not like I am offended if the results are off, but in the same vein, people who want to consolidate opinion or make the results "right" are super weird to me I guess? Maybe this is all some new version of "I've never even heard the Beatles" or whatever, but if people who bother to vote in a music poll actually can't drum up a year long list of 25 songs they like out of the thousands of things they've heard without someone spoonfeeding them some tastemaker nonsense after the fact, they suck at listening to music imo.
