3 feet high/nation of millions/paul's boutique is not a period more like represents the the majority of albums that fit the description

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:15 (eleven years ago)

(plz dont be pedantic abt "majority" thank you)

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:15 (eleven years ago)

Gotta say I find the trap style a lot more satisfying than the Madlib and RTJ albums. Those records sound dated to me, like things I'd have been very excited to here in 2001. RTJ is insufferable bollocks frankly.

well ok i won't list other ones but my point stands that that style became out of reach

and i agree that rap is in general has been more minimal than maximal

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 January 2015 19:18 (eleven years ago)

it's just that the 'indie' music that tends to place in these things is usually pretty boring, safe stuff that seems to be placing for no reason other than the fact that lots of other magazines have put it on their eoy lists -- it's hard to even locate where the enthusiasm for it on ilm is even coming from. like that war on drugs song had virtually no one explaining why they actually liked it when it showed up.

Anyone could easily say it's just that the 'pop' music that tends to place in these things is usually pretty boring, safe stuff that seems to be placing for no reason other than the fact that lots of other magazines have put it on their covers' and what not. It would be wrong, obviously. Just as it is wrong for The War on Drugs. It's fine to dislike music, but making assumptions why some users like this and that, for any genre, it's NAGL.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:19 (eleven years ago)

that said, as i pointed out upthread, that period of 3 feet high/nation of millions/paul's boutique heavy sample stuff didn't really die a naturual death either due to sample clearance so you can't say 100 percent how things would have turned out had biz markie not sample gilbert o'sullivan (though i'm sure some other case would have happened anyway)

I elided that but true.

Same time I could stand to hear the next development in hip hop. I've been hearing variations on these 808 rhythms on EOY for years now and as a dilettante I can't help wanting a bit of a change

Yeah, I'm including those—probably somewhat falsely—in my maximalist description. Like, it's tough for me to talk about because, admittedly, rap isn't my go-to music. I like a lot of it. Sometimes it's all I want to listen to. But it's definitely not my true blue comfort zone.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Would a 2010-14 poll really be all that fun? At this point, I think it'd be more fun to poll the years spanning the life of ilx up to now. 2001-2014, because we could rewrite A LOT of history that way (which might be a bad thing, but it also might not be).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:31 (eleven years ago)

rap has been so pro-pussy eating for like over 5 years now

J0rdan S., Friday, 23 January 2015 19:32 (eleven years ago)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:33 (eleven years ago)

i think half-decade polls are lame, just be patient and wait until 2020

ciderpress, Friday, 23 January 2015 19:33 (eleven years ago)

13 years feels way arbitrary to me, but.

Eric H., Friday, 23 January 2015 19:34 (eleven years ago)

What's often forgotten in these roll outs is that the people voting for these tracks have had time to let them grow on them. I voted for the fucking War On Drugs song but only after months of denial. My band mates pretty much kept playing the album and enthusing about it. Months of me asking why this was supposed to be remarkable music until one day I just found myself really wanting to hear Red Eyes. I still think WoD are an inherently uninteresting band but I genuinely love Red Eyes.
There are plenty of tracks in this poll that might not make sense to me now but as is typical, I'll find myself coming back to them and one day in July it'll all click and they'll become faves.
Most opinions on EOY are snap judgements based on cursory listens. This is when we rate songs based on what they initially represent to us - 'boys with guitars', 'slow jams' etc. And there's little time to form positive personal connections to them. All that comes later in the best possible situation.
