I can see not liking RTJ aesthetically but man Killer Mike is just a great mc

I voted for 3 rap songs, none of them RTJ - Vince Staples, Le1f and Lil B
― my shoes are deception (imago), Friday, 23 January 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)
I'm just using RTJ as an example because they'd already been brought up previously. I'm a big fan of rap styles that don't get much traction anymore (boom bap, boisterous P.E. style stuff with really dense beats, etc) and really give no shits about basic-ass trap beats. That doesn't mean "I don't listen to rap but", it just means I want more from it.

p much my position but willing to accept trap has more to offer
good post wins, tho I protest I am not gnashing and wailing abt the reception of music I like - I am mostly just glad it placed in a pop poll, justifying it as pop maybe

Sorry, should've clarified. TH are among my favourite acts in history, but it's the whole 'so normal it's weird' aesthetic (Chris Frantz wearing Lacoste shirts at art school etc) they went for as opposed to the backing music, which is great and amazing.

Truth be told, I really really like Quan's crying rap style. Wish the beats were better.

re: 'tried its best' u shd read the responses to dawson, most of which were a little dismissive, mostly of the vocals, I mean cmon here it was received ok but u cannot deny an incongruity. fwiw I tried my best w everything here, it is not meant smugly or in a derogatory sense, it is genuinely affirmative
― my shoes are deception (imago), Friday, 23 January 2015 17:33 (eleven years ago)
dawson seemed pretty well receieved to me compared to some other stuff on there
― ciderpress, Friday, 23 January 2015 17:35 (eleven years ago)
The fact that most people commenting on it got all the way (or most of the way) to the end of the Richard Dawson track on spotify should count as a victory imo.

yet I feel compelled to join those reiterating once again that the supposed wailing and gnashing of teeth over indie &c placing quite, simply, didn't, fucking, happen, as the fact that contenderizer had to resort to using brad's completely innocuous post about how he votes as an example of oppressive ilm orthodoxy hilariously shows.

About an hour back, I search and checked every incidence of "indie" ITT. Here are a few tidbits to chew over:

This isn't an "ILX orthodoxy", and I've never said it was. It's an ILM tracks poll orthodoxy. It's pervasiveness is far from complete and certainly not "oppressive". I do find it rather strange, though.

yus, no indie, no country and no metal. A great roll out so far. A proper tracks poll. - ok fine
indie bands its always kind of weird to see their songs in singles polls cause they still seem just like a song off an album - this is not a value judgement, it's along the lines of brad's post about rock being an albums genre
ugh, more indie. - ok
adding grist to my argument that when indie does make it, it's usually boring dreck - noted indie hater imago
i am not against indie music in principal fwiw i even like some of it but alot of it these days is just very insufferable - no you're right this is venomous stuff
well that sure breaks a pretty encouraging streak of songs that weren't indie rock garbage - you can have this one
an indies idea of what pop is is maybe the most telling and horrific display of all - this post was by lagoon who iirc is not against indie music in principle fwiw
Fer crying out loud, these indie rock tracks are giving me dysentery. Absolutely sickening and disgusting. - noted indie hater kornrulez6969
this really epitomises plodding, ponderous journeyman indie to me. ugh, the culture that pitchfork created - lex
indie snob cadre loves this hot garbage lol - this was in response to "IN YOUR FACE POP SNOB CADRE!", was not about an indie song and was by lagoon who iirc
think we ought to introduce an annual WOD'n'Spoon award for the worst indie rock garbage in the poll- noted indie hater nickb making an uncharacteristic pun

I'm more curious about what happens when they find out that thing they liked because of how new it sounded had actually been done 10 years before by someone else. Do they suddenly stop liking it because there's a new entry in the timeline?

seandalai/jf how many voters does the #77 album have? I'm guessing it may be higher than the tracks poll. If not and it's 5 or 6 votes for albums placing 70-77 then anything has a chance and that's quite exciting as it is usually my favourite run of a poll.
Like the lex I enjoy seeing things with not a lot of votes but those who voted for it voted it high. It's a good sign of "i really must listen to that"

Controversy
He also was the presenter of the infamous Soccer's Hard Men video released in 1992, which featured archived footage of himself and many other "hard men" of the game, and included advice for budding "hard men". After the release of the video, Jones was fined £20,000 and given a six-month ban (suspended for three years) for "bringing the game into disrepute". Wimbledon chairman Sam Hammam branded Jones a "mosquito brain".[citation needed]
― how's life, Friday, 23 January 2015 18:36 (eleven years ago)
His next big piece was in the 2006 film, X-Men: The Last Stand, as the X-Men villain, Cain Marko, A.K.A., Juggernaut. Jones said that he would like to play Juggernaut in a spin-off. His line in the film, "I'm the Juggernaut, Bitch!", was based on a pre-existing Internet parody.

xyzzzz gets it. i'm not suggesting that are every one of those quotes i pulled is particularly "venomous". i'm not suggesting that they were all posted by people with an axe to grind against indie. i'm merely suggesting that they help establish a pattern. cheerfully self-effacing comments from people who actually like indie music are just as much a part of that pattern the outright loathing of committed haters.
at the time i ran the search i mentioned earlier, there had been 170 instances of the word "indie" itt. i read through the first 100 posts involved, and found that more than half were using the word in a negative sense (sometime referentially or even affectionately), but my point is that other genres of music simply do not receive comparable treatment in tracks thread. no one ever goes, "oh gross, more disgusting fucking pop trash!"
early on, i commented in passing that i don't personally have much use for "candy-glossed, pseudo romantic dance pop" and thus really couldn't evaluate the shift k3y track, and instantly got flagged for the "worst opinion" J0rdan had ever read. which i didn't mind or take too seriously, all in good fun. but no one popped up aghast to express their horror in response to any of the indie squawks i mentioned. they're par for the course. ilx's relationship to indie is ~special~.
