deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:05 (eleven years ago)

I do mean Menace Ruine, yeah.

emil.y, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:08 (eleven years ago)

i read a ton of ilm but i always seem to miss out on whatever nexus of discussion spawns consensus picks for the tracks poll

ciderpress, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:10 (eleven years ago)

the only acts that ppl were notably hostile to imo were war on drugs and QT PC MUSIC and thats completely fair and warranted other than that there seemed to be a pretty typical range of opinion around each song regardless of genre, indie fans just bewildered after going to the trouble of selecting music that generally codes tasteful and respectable

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

Id be quite happy to see both Menace Ruine and Wovenhand place though yes they're more dark folk/countryish (WH) than metal. It's music metal fans like rather than metal.

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:13 (eleven years ago)

xp but spoon got more abuse than anyone (i hated the song too fwiw)

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:14 (eleven years ago)

ppl did hate the spoon its true

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:14 (eleven years ago)

i was hostile to both caribou trax because his latest direction feels like betrayal -_-

oh god yeah & ugh spoon lol

my shoes are deception (imago), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:14 (eleven years ago)

i liked the spoon and loved the seasons waiting on u for the record

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:15 (eleven years ago)

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:16 (eleven years ago)

funk so fake it vaporized

gr8080, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:17 (eleven years ago)

I liked the fact that I voted for both the thing that seemed to get the most consensus admiration (Ninos) and the most fight-fight-hate-hate-hate reaction (QT).

emil.y, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:17 (eleven years ago)

oh right lol the bruno mars volta feel like it was mostly just me and lex hating that

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:18 (eleven years ago)

whoever said it sounds like cameo btw thank you was trying to place that

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:18 (eleven years ago)

In the case of War on Drugs and QT, people were making assumptions about the people who enjoy those artists, which is always NAGL. You should never pretend to understand why someone likes or doesn't like something.

massive xp

silverfish, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:19 (eleven years ago)

'Do It Again' got a fair bit of shade from people who've probably liked at least one thing by both acts in the past, or at least other stuff in the same ballpark.

nashwan, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:20 (eleven years ago)

idk music is cultural feel like its fine to make those assumptions its all in good fun i dont think anyone is going be murdered or anything xp

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:20 (eleven years ago)

wont somebody think of the mortgages

gr8080, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:22 (eleven years ago)

btw was listening to future islands in my car driving down the winter back roads yesterday just appreciating gods glory

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:23 (eleven years ago)

people just generally don't like being reduced to a stereotype, is all I'm saying. I agree that no murders will occur because of this thread.

xp

nothing codes generally, right? there was genre-based pushback on against me! and war on drugs as "rock" and the latter among a great many other things (including QT & spoon) as "indie". someone, can't remember who, went so far as to say that while s/he might like or listen to rock, s/he'd never vote for it on tracks -- supporting the general implication that related genres somehow ~just doesn't belong~ here.

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:23 (eleven years ago)

sure and ppl are often wrong in their characterizations but at the same time let them speak their truth you know xp

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:24 (eleven years ago)

doesn't = don't ok

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:24 (eleven years ago)

This War on Drugs fan stays strapped, run up and get done up

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:25 (eleven years ago)

I think it's less about making assumptions about why people like things as making assumptions about why they choose to listen in the first place (and by extension what they choose to ignore).

I mean in general a lot of pop fandom is inherently about self-definition and the definition of a personal aesthetic, even now, albeit mostly among people considerably younger than us, that's part of the point and part of the fun.

the top 40 is just the sound of autotuned crying (sleeve), Friday, 23 January 2015 15:27 (eleven years ago)

Matt granted its hostile to outsiders (tho mostly not on ilm bar a few high profile posters) but ive found 'outsiders' being equally hostile. Look how many lol metal type posts that get made sometimes.

Anyway nobody can complain that there's no metal in this poll because quite simply metallers didn't vote when they could have. Im not complaining at all about none in it. I wouldnt expect any in a tracks/singles poll a its not that type of genre.

From my POV its better to have less genre polls - that way hopefully you would get more people to vote in this partic poll.

Its a tracks poll, not singles so surely it would've been fine.

i hadn't seen the 'turn down for what' msuic video until last night, it's something

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:31 (eleven years ago)

the trouble with the last way-too-many posts from lj etc is that they're 50% very selective reading and 50% insufferably self-congratulatory.

- no one reacted with horror to your "weird" favourites, most ppl gave them a fair shot
- the squawks of outrage came after the boring mnstrm-indie and you joined in with glee. also, one of the songs that elicited the most squawks of outrage was a taylor swift song (and rightfully so)
- you seem only to perceive weirdness in the most obvious of places...i don't think "weirdness" or even "innovation" is an inherent positive but i'm not sure how dawson or gately are weirder than young thug's voice or fka twigs' beats or nicki minaj's persona or kira isabella's cultural protest
- as far as people hating on entire genres goes, literally no one has said "ew i wish there was less of this difficult avant stuff" but a lot of people have complained about pop-dance and rap while eliding a lot of very different artists

― xyzzzz__,

maybe but look at the complaints from people about how some were not stand out singles/hits and were simply from tracks people liked on albums. That happens every year so basically the whole thing does feel like its singles only except that technically they arent singles as theyre from youtube or soundcloud rather than the traditional single.

it mightve been me but i was just talking about how rock is often more of an album than a track thing experientially and i feel extremely misunderstood misconstrued and frankly negged right now

lag∞n, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:34 (eleven years ago)

i think the important thing now ensuring the physical safety of ppl who voted for the war on drugs who are in danger of being murdered

Have people actually stopped you from nominating tracks you want to? Otherwise its just worrying a bit too much about what people might think.

I am not looking at any complaints - doesn't interest me.

xyzzzz__, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:39 (eleven years ago)

lex i haven't been criticising the response to weird stuff - just saying that a lack of close listening won't brook much reward sometimes. i even said that you especially gave dawson a fair crack. i've mostly been lamenting how easily i join in with the naysayers when it's something a bit more sonically generic

i said that bobby shmurda was weird & great too! haha. young thug's voice is aight but Le1f did the best pop-rap song of the year imo, now that is some off the chain shit imo

Cosmic Slop are you actually interested in the music that IS in this poll?

Matt DC, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:41 (eleven years ago)

I only voted for albums, because I definitely tend to listen way more to full albums rather than individual tracks and in other years when I did vote for tracks it tended to be mostly album highlights. I suspect that this is the case for many people who tend to listen to more rock/indie/avant stuff where the focus tends to be more on albums rather than individual tracks.

In a certain sense, for some of my favourite albums, it feels weird to put one track above all the others when really it's the entire thing (or at least most of it) I like and I am sometimes tempted to vote for 2-3 tracks on a particular album because they seem inseparable and the one highlight isn't as good without the context of the album.

silverfish, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:43 (eleven years ago)

This wasn't my favorite year for the tracks poll ever (no reflection on any person or group of voters). Too much of what I'd already heard was stuff I didn't like and a lot of what I'd never heard really wasn't to my taste, but I love the process of the rollout and the discussion about the music. These two weeks are my favorite two weeks on ilm all year long.

not at all. I was ill since xmas so didn't feel like nominating and by the time I was better i spent more time on my albums ballot after seandalai pm'd me with a last min reminder to vote.

Cosmic Slop are you actually interested in the music that IS in this poll?

― Matt DC

sure, i like some of it , just not as much as previous years. Usually I hear tons of 'dance' stuff ive never heard that i liked and same with the rap. I like to hear the good stuff ive not been exposed to. I dont listen to radio so its nice to catch up. You shouldn't pigeon-hole me as only liking only metal just because I only mainly post in that thread. (i didnt even post on ilm most of last year).

I havent even been negative about any songs itt bar spoon and a yawn at loads of t swift placing, have I? That is nothing compared to others.

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 23 January 2015 15:57 (eleven years ago)

i have a secret fondness for this stage in the proceedings, bookmarking like a motherfucker here
