in my mind 'no flex zone' is a real throwback to the golden age of fruity swag anthems but actually whenever i listen to it again the production is way too sci-fi for that era

The only rap track in the top 20 I will fuck with is Vic Mensa, and it seems quite an outlier among the goon crew. Not surprising I guess.

I don't like anything about this except the way in which he says 'NO FLEX. ZONE' and I really really like that. Like it's the gap between "flex" and "zone" that somehow makes the entire song.

im a big fan of the vic mensa record. found it odd some dude thinks its on the weak side of what chance does when i think vic is the much more ... accessible version of chance

As much as I prefer this year's results to any of the other years in which I actually submitted a ballot ... 2014 really was an off year for tracks.

I'm betting La Joya isn't lower than 100.

true. the epic chorus initially reminded me of rich kidz - my life ft. waka (who actually screams "flex" thru the chorus!) but the chintzy horns of my life are of a different era compeltely

It's also the only one of the (US) rap songs that wasn't an IRL hit. Extending to the full list, the only others that didn't reach at least the r&b/rap airplay chart are "Boss Ass Bitch" and "YRN".

Im surprised nothing from the scott walker album made it unlike previous years. Wonder if that means it might struggle in the albums poll? Did the backing of Sunn O))) put people off? I wasn't around on ilm at the time it came out for the discussion but it did well in metal poll.

Of the two remaining I'd be equally happy with either, they're both entirely worthy winners but it's weird that after this completely chaotic and in-your-face top 77 the two leaders are both hushed and slinky sci-fi sex music.

Someone on twitter pointed out that the chorus of "No Flex Zone" is pretty much a field holler.

No. He's less idiosyncratic, that's for sure. He's also about 3% as charismatic. He just lucked into a really good song here.
