i mean, no one really knew what to make of music this year (that pitchfork #2 song had a zach de la rocha verse is evidence of this), and this song had meme momentum but is also just beautiful so it makes sense as a potential rallying point

this is a discusion for next week but it really helped The Black Messiah that there wasn't that rallying record yet.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:19 (eleven years ago)

i love how the bass switches up and does these little inversions here and there while still driving the whole thing

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:19 (eleven years ago)

i still love the future islands song

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:20 (eleven years ago)

the pitchfork song with a zach de la rocha verse happens to be str8 hypersonic flopson, quit the ad hominem

flopson, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:21 (eleven years ago)

also i met this dude once and he is the chillest happiest friendliest bro on earth, makes me double happy for all his success this year

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:21 (eleven years ago)

Tbh, I'm kind of surprised that anyone didn't hear "Starbucks lovers" in "Blank Space". P. sure it has to do with her enunciation: she emphasizes "of" in a way that a native speaker never would and doesn't pause at all after the "st" in "list".

Richard Dawson is good. I listened to the album once or twice and didn't totally click but I'm digging this. I don't mind the vocals but I actually like prog and English folk vocals.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:21 (eleven years ago)

"buddy, come on! hey, thank you very much! nice goin'! how about that! i'll take all of that you got! future islands! that was wonderful! thank you very much! what do you think paul?"

goole, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:22 (eleven years ago)

dave loved it

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:22 (eleven years ago)

The great thing about Season, for me at least, is that it never gets boring? I will never be unhappy to hear the song.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:23 (eleven years ago)

But he didn't ask them about their drums.

MarkoP, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:23 (eleven years ago)

V happy with this placing, forgot to vote for it >.<

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:23 (eleven years ago)

Can definitely appreciate the Letterman performance but I don't think the song is all that much (I don't think I've ever actually listened to the recorded version).

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:24 (eleven years ago)

Ha, I didn't know that this song was called "Hideaway" or is by someone named "Kiesza". I've heard it approx. 17 236 594 times. I did always wonder what it was since it sounds more like real house music than everything else on top 40 radio.

Looks like my #1 got 78'd.

Gunning for a Tinashe win though I like all 3 songs that are left.

bae sremmurd (monotony), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:25 (eleven years ago)

i'm guessing my #1 got 578'd

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:25 (eleven years ago)

incidentally the drummer who plays with Future Islands on tour and on the Letterman appearance (Mike Lowry from Lake Trout) has been my favorite drummers in Baltimore for ages, love that guy getting a weird little peripheral bit of fame for playing something way more straightforward than what he usually does

EVERY HUGH JACKMAN HAS A VAN HELSING (some dude), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:26 (eleven years ago)

I just listened to "seasons" all the way through for the first time, really paying attention. And it's okay! But not amazing.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:26 (eleven years ago)

I had no hope for my #1 placing.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:26 (eleven years ago)

Oh man, that's the guy from Lake Trout? That's awesome!

how's life, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:26 (eleven years ago)

surprised the flawless remix looks like it's not going to place considering how much ilm loves beyoncé (and nicki)

It's really soft and grows on you, kinda like a jacket your mom buys you that you don't really like but when you wear it it feels really comfortable and you jsut find yourself reaching for that jacket every time

, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:28 (eleven years ago)

future islands looks like dear zachary.

||||||||, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:28 (eleven years ago)

I was never HUGE on "lifestyle" its obv a future classic? but lyrically it's kind of a boring outing for Thug & Quan has the best lines.

nb I think "Flava" was a better song

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I haven't listened to Seasons since the day the Letterman performance video went semi-viral. Had totally forgotten what it sounds like, but this is alright I guess. Definitely preferable to Spoon or The War on Drugs for poll indie fuX0r content.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I didn't really have any hope for my #1 placing either, and it made #40!!!

Just coincidentally, and I know everybody's got other things on their minds, who were the other two who #1'd Pooley?

Frederik B, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:30 (eleven years ago)

after listening to this song about 4 times now i think it's very good

nothing but rap and country (diamonddave85), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:30 (eleven years ago)

OOO-oo-OO-oo ive been waiting you-oo-oo

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:30 (eleven years ago)

OK, there were a lot of xposts. This Future Islands song is the sort of thing that affirms that I don't really understand rock critics. I guess I don't mind it; maybe if it were in a movie I liked, I could get into it.

xposts again Hm, diamonddave's love makes me want to reconsider.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:30 (eleven years ago)

the lyrics are prob my favorite thing about "Seasons," the anger towards someone dragging their feet feels right for the current social/political zeitgeist

I didn't vote for it though

example (crüt), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:30 (eleven years ago)

Comparisons to Elton and FYC are absolutely on point.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:31 (eleven years ago)

logged into all my google accounts just to downvote seasons letterman on YT. his dancing is a total beamer.

||||||||, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:31 (eleven years ago)

Production on Seasons misses the mark somehow. I love the overdriven melodrama but it doesn't quite nail the take-off in the chorus.

smh as ever at the ritual huffing and puffing surrounding the half a dozen indie-identified songs that make it into the 77.

Minaj moron (Re-Make/Re-Model), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:31 (eleven years ago)

I think I voted for 20 tracks. "Blank Space" would have been #21. Maybe "Habits" and "Boom Clap" could have squeaked into a top 50?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:31 (eleven years ago)

love his dancing on letterman, i think it's endearing

nothing but rap and country (diamonddave85), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:32 (eleven years ago)

Hey, I feel like there was a time when indie was supposed to be the alternative to things that sounded like this?
xpost

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:32 (eleven years ago)

beamer? this is not the jay batman meaning of beamer i take it

Wouldn't be a yearly ritual if people voted for better indie.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:33 (eleven years ago)

don't think there has been much huffing and puffing? i've listened to this future island tracks over and over and i love it!

ritual anti indie puffing >>> weird empirical claims abt songwriting/production

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:33 (eleven years ago)

i'm still pretty neutral about this song but i pretty sincerely love the letterman performance

i say this everytime they come up, but as much love as i have for "waiting on you," "Balance" is still the superior Future Islands jam (and video): http://youtu.be/g0LJNEQz-E4
