does the guy not do his weird growl on record? cuz that was a big/weird-but-at-least-distinctive part of that live performance
― dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:11 (eleven years ago)
did "Seasons" win the 2014 Spot the Influence award? Fine Young Cannibals! Wang Chung! I think Destroyer's album marked the last time so many referents were thrown against the wall.

On time for the top three :-D

it's a fine song, i just remain baffled by how so many sites/lists/whatever posited it as THE representative song of the year
― i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:11 (eleven years ago)
Still not bored of Seasons despite playing it over and over most of the year. It's just such a beautiful song.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:12 (eleven years ago)
does the guy not do his weird growl on record?
he totally does. studio version of "seasons" is v subdued in this respect though
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:12 (eleven years ago)
Jordan that would make more sense if the 80s synthpop revival hadn't now been going on for longer than the actual 80s did.
I think of it as an old school Disney crooning ballad with a synthpop motor underneath it, there's something very innocent but also very corny about it.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:12 (eleven years ago)
Really it's more of a 60s pop ballad with 80s production than an 80s song.

innnteresting. i don't think i agree tho, the chord progression is straight 80's

Matt, that's the best description I've read!
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:13 (eleven years ago)
I don't get the consensus on this one, it's an alright song but it doesn't scream 'indie anthem' like say 'All my friends' or some of those early Arcade Fire songs where I could understand where all the love was coming from. This just feels very derivative to me definitely not a top 10 song.
― the QT conundrum (Moka), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:13 (eleven years ago)
this song is nice
― out here like a flopson (tpp), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:13 (eleven years ago)
Letterman said it was THE representative song of the year?
it's ok, i've come around on this, i like the singing quite a lot. and the orchestration is pretty rote at this point.
xps get on letterman with this one weird growl
― goole, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:14 (eleven years ago)
the whole album is so good big hearted strange expansive sad and jammy

Az. Banks will do well on albums but there never seemed to be any consensus about what the best tracks on her album other than "212" were.

Like every time I hear this I hear Elton John singing it in his hammiest possible way and I can't get that out of my head, I actually liked it at first but I could quite happily never hear it again.

"two weeks" seems like the obv winner to me now
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:15 (eleven years ago)
"Seasons" is a good song in principle, but it kind of sounds awful as a record... like they didn't get the production right.
― daavid, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:15 (eleven years ago)
haha I can totally hear Elton suddenly covering it live
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:16 (eleven years ago)
perfectly fine with Fine Young Cannibals scaling the hip influence mountain.

i mean, no one really knew what to make of music this year (that pitchfork #2 song had a zach de la rocha verse is evidence of this), and this song had meme momentum but is also just beautiful so it makes sense as a potential rallying point
― flopson, Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:17 (eleven years ago)
Really it's more of a 60s pop ballad with 80s production than an 80s song.Have you heard the BADBADNOTGOOD Remix?

elton and fyc both worthy influences for future islands

― my shoes are deception (imago), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:18 (eleven years ago)
Ha, I didn't know that this song was called "Hideaway" or is by someone named "Kiesza". I've heard it approx. 17 236 594 times. I did always wonder what it was since it sounds more like real house music than everything else on top 40 radio.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 22 January 2015 20:18 (eleven years ago)
60s ballad would have more than 2 chords (slight exaggeration). and a bridge and a key change.

Tbh, I'm kind of surprised that anyone didn't hear "Starbucks lovers" in "Blank Space". P. sure it has to do with her enunciation: she emphasizes "of" in a way that a native speaker never would and doesn't pause at all after the "st" in "list".
Richard Dawson is good. I listened to the album once or twice and didn't totally click but I'm digging this. I don't mind the vocals but I actually like prog and English folk vocals.
