Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:58 (eleven years ago)

ty gear, will check out that thread more from now on :)

my shoes are deception (imago), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:58 (eleven years ago)

like "slow dancing" imo it's texture and mood in search of a hook

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:58 (eleven years ago)

I've never diverged so strongly from my Singles Jukebox colleagues.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

only heard bc of the singles jukebox

not really a fan

2015 payphone is a cinematic symbol for desperation

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

this song is really great

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

i mean "solo dancing" lol

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

Fantastic song. For some reason I missed it on the nominations thread otherwise it would have been in my top 10.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

oh i knew this was the singles jukebox's top 2014 track but i didn't really get why and most of the rest of its internet presence seems to be a remix

seems like a wispier and less resonant "solo dancing"

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

I have never heard of this artist or song.

― The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015

Welcome to my entire thread experience. Well, about 70% of it.

Jeff W, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:59 (eleven years ago)

This track is great, was waiting for it.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:00 (eleven years ago)

This sounds like a walking around an empty downtown on a Sunday night kind of song.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:00 (eleven years ago)

wtf all these comparisons are awful

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:00 (eleven years ago)

i's all about that moment when the beat drops out and it's just her voice and the piano going "I love these streets, I love these streets, but they weren’t meant for me to walk…”. gorgeous song imo.

Roz, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:00 (eleven years ago)

This sounds like an intro in search of a song. I kept waiting for the song to actually start.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

Heh, they're side-by-side on my Best of 2014 mix, and I don't entirely disagree with that assessment, but texture and mood count for a lot in my book.

Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

so my Panda Bear dreams are dead for the singles i guess

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

the build on this track is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "habits" or whatever

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

I hadn't heard anyone outside of TSJ mention this song. Are there a lot of writers from there on ilm?

I like alright it but it doesn't sound like top 10 material for me, let alone best track of the year. This sort of sound was everywhere in 2014 and I can easily think of 3 tracks I like much better than this one.

the QT conundrum (Moka), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

ooh that means one of the 9 remaining "dead certs" as outlined by matt dc has missed the 77, hope it's "seasons"!

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

seems like a wispier and less resonant "solo dancing"

For some reason it reminds me of JoJo - Marvin's Room Remix, but obviously not quite as powerful!

MikoMcha, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:01 (eleven years ago)

*starts chilling the champagne*

Germane Quip (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:02 (eleven years ago)

there's a carefully constructed & well paced rush in "vermillion" imo that just strikes me as great songcraft

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:02 (eleven years ago)

The video is baffling though, who's the scummy dude at the end? Why does steal his car?

MikoMcha, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:02 (eleven years ago)

the version on spotify has more pronounced guitar at the end iirc

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:03 (eleven years ago)

erk, first meridian dan, now this. ghastly.

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:03 (eleven years ago)

i would say the chances of 'seasons' missing the top ten are nil

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:03 (eleven years ago)

I should also say that I didn't love "Vermillion" right away -- it took a few listens to get under my skin.

Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:03 (eleven years ago)

did you all even get through the first verse of the song before writing some of these comparisons i mean

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:04 (eleven years ago)

wow. I love this...Roz right on about the 'I love these streets' part.

campreverb, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:04 (eleven years ago)

I'm listening to the 2013 playlist right now and idk it just feels like it was a better year

seandalai, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:04 (eleven years ago)

this is a very urban track too, i think katherine made that point ... makes it resonate for me

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:05 (eleven years ago)

i will also say that it took me several months of not caring about this song before i continually started searching it again on spotify and finally giving in

also the video is not very good, i think listening w/o the video actually helped me appreciate the song more lol

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:05 (eleven years ago)

its her estranged boyfriend she calls him and is all im inside the store come get me so she can steal the car whiles hes in there, she steals it because she need to get out of there man, tho tbh he seems more of a wait in the car for her to come out type to me

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:05 (eleven years ago)

really excited for "na na" #1

Mordy, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:06 (eleven years ago)

Can't remember how "Vermillion" goes but I have it cued up for after I stop bopping my head to "Need U (100%)"

seandalai, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:06 (eleven years ago)

I'm listening to the 2013 playlist right now and idk it just feels like it was a better year

Yup.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:06 (eleven years ago)

i'm down w/ this song, def a keeper

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:06 (eleven years ago)

it's the kind of song that i wouldn't be surprised snuck up on me but i feel no desire to actively seek it out again by myself

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:06 (eleven years ago)

This Tove Lo thing is the worst song in the top 20 that isn't German Whip, just totally nothingy.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:07 (eleven years ago)

Pleasantly suprised this placed. Obviously huge overlap with the "Solo Dancing" demographic, thanks to TSJ.

Would never have guessed she's Spanish from the diction. From the Canary islands via University of London.

excreting zeitgeist (Sanpaku), Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:07 (eleven years ago)

i'm listening to the 2013 playlist right now and idk it just feels like it was a better year

I def feel like I got more out of the 2013 list than I have with this one so far.

Roz, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:07 (eleven years ago)

Ahhhhh... a bit slow on the uptake over here.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:07 (eleven years ago)

i love these streets
i love these streets but they weren't meant for me to walk
i love these people
i love the people but they never seem to wanna talk
and it's been my only home ever since i saw
the sky of vermillion

^^ this is great writing about feeling attracted to but alienated by a city as well

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:07 (eleven years ago)

TDFW: at some point this winter i had one of those moments where i was alone in my apartment doing whatever and all of a sudden i bust out in a comedy french accent “TURN DOWN POR QUOI!!” completely unbidden and cracked myself up. cabin fever gets pretty crazy. great song, will always love.

“can’t do without you”: not much to say. love this guy’s earlier stuff, and this isn’t as good.

“hot nigga”: pandemic otm

“german whip”: “guys better show respect if they see man pullin’ up in a TT/ guys better show respect if they see man filling up in BP/ 20 pound of diesel mate/ if i fill up the tank, it’ll make me late” is he on a kid’s show?

tove lo: w/e

skepta & JME: i’m really sorry i’m hearing this for the first time right now. w/o question the best *video* of the whole run too. “from day one i said i was serious then serious hit the jackpot/ people ask what music i make, turn the volume up ‘cos that’s what” lmao awesome

richard dawson: great guitar playing. sure is a lot of it, and a lot of singing and lyrics to go along with it!

“move that dope”: bboo bomp brrr bom booormm boo bbbrrrrrrmmmm

kiesza: idk, a little over-schooled maybe?

“no type”: i love how there’s this grim booming funereal track about what kind of girls he’s into and everybody on earth just went with it.

vic mensa: no idea who or what this is, but hey, hip house (kind of)! apart from being, like, good, it seems really “accomplished” in a way that works (the kiesza compares unfavorably)

goole, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)

my thoughts & prayers are with anyone who doesn't like "german whip"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)

i also like that a singles jukebox 'hit' actually managed to do at least something on p&j/here etc., most of the time the songs they all get excited about that have no critical traction or promotion elsewhere are roundly ignored

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:08 (eleven years ago)

Robyn meets M83 isn't my favourite sound I think

seandalai, Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:09 (eleven years ago)

the other way to look at "vermillion" is that it's an english language javiera mena song

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 18:09 (eleven years ago)
