i won't begrudge anyone who likes "no flex zone" better since they're very diff tracks in a lot of ways but i think i'll take the sheer generosity of the "no type" chorus over the energy and insistent melody of "no flex zone"

hard to go wrong though

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:07 (eleven years ago)

"BUT.... THAT IS A TYPE."

To us, bad bitches are a category. It’s not even a type. You got Asian, Latino, black, white, tall, short—we like all of them. As long as they bad bitches. I think “bad bitch” is like a trait that the girl should have. As long as she’s fine. Girls be like, “Am I your type?”

also lol @ "top 10 is a no flex zone"

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:08 (eleven years ago)

Skimming through Sremmlife right now. Yuck.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:10 (eleven years ago)

great album

example (crüt), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:11 (eleven years ago)

rev you are too smart and too thoughtful to discuss caribou in terms of being a "dance act"

― gr8080, Thursday, January 22, 2015 9:01 AM Bookmark

Honestly, it would never occur to that Caribou wouldn't be considered a dance act!

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:11 (eleven years ago)

i have no idea why rae sremmurd are so divisive. of all the young up-and-coming rap acts around now inc. many that have placed in this poll, they're just so easily likeable. the album is brilliant obv

"No Type" is a 7/10, "No Flex Zone" is a 17/10.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:12 (eleven years ago)

I'm sick of trap beats/styles at this point in my life. Also, young people.

electronic artist yes dance act no way

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

"The Vile Stuff" was my Number 1. Thrilled to see it place so high.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

btw these cute lil kids referencing codeine is p foul, kinda points to the problem w the raymond strummer project altogether

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:13 (eleven years ago)

I can think of seven songs that are nailed on for the top 10 (No Flex Zone, Rather Be, Two Weeks, Style, Blank Space, Seasons, 2 On) and three that could be anyone's. That reworked Jacko demo is in with a decent shout as well.

"Lifestyle" is a shoe-in. I still haven't given up hope on "Flawless (Remix)", not sure what else.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:14 (eleven years ago)

definitely overlap w/a type of indie/electronic act that gets lumped in with dance, though. caribou and four tet definitely put in the same category usually

feel like jjj sampled this Richard Dawson track at work

$80 is absurd and very ridiculous! (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:15 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I forgot about Lifestyle, Hookah as well maybe?

I'm thinking maybe something from Run The Jewels and maybe a Miranda Lambert song as well.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:16 (eleven years ago)

no to genre-policing

"really love" seemed to be the most popular d'angelo track so i wouldn't be surprised if it went top 10

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:17 (eleven years ago)

It's not like he's fucking ambient or something. His stuff has a beat to it, just a weak-ass piddling beat.

xps: I'm not a huge Four Tet fangirl but he's always struck me as doing the same thing as Caribou except so much better.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:17 (eleven years ago)

Four Tet is wise enough to steer clear of milquetoast whimpering so I'd keep them in separate categories anyway.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:17 (eleven years ago)

I suppose I've done well this year; holding out for mark barrott then my top seven will have placed bar the wrong katie gately track. slightly wearying context of the rundown makes them seem different though

ogmor, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:18 (eleven years ago)

20 and 22, and if they identify as that they might actually be older

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:18 (eleven years ago)

keep your two cents, take your own advice

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:18 (eleven years ago)

ha i thought they were like 16

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:18 (eleven years ago)

yeah, that perspective makes sense but Caribou is really doing something diff, they just have similar sounds but aim for something diff imo xp to rev

mh, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:19 (eleven years ago)

not that 16 year olds dont do all sorts of drugs just feels kinda off to me

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:19 (eleven years ago)

Oh yeah, "Really Love". I don't feel like anyone here really repped for "Hookah" above other Young Thug stuff. One thing I voted for and expected to do very well but I'm now giving up on is "Down on My Luck".

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:20 (eleven years ago)

Also you totally hear Caribou in clubs - Sun/I Can't Live Without You/Your Love have all had some dancefloor presence, appeared in loads of mixes etc.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:20 (eleven years ago)

rae sremmurd definitely code as kids, especially if you look at the ages of others in their videos, the energy, and the activity going on in their videos

otoh chief keef seems to be coming from a completely diff place and seems more 'adult' but he's younger than them?

mh, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:21 (eleven years ago)

"coming from a different place" was supposed to be rhetorical but, yeah...

mh, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)

I thought they said in an interview that one is 19 and other 'would prefer not to say' - presumably younger?

MikoMcha, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)

some stuff on Our Love could've been under his dancier Daphni alias - 'Tiberius' with Owen P was alright

nashwan, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:22 (eleven years ago)

No Type is my maybe 5th to place. I like how both RS singles are kind of mild disses against trad notions of masculinity. Obv I am assuming (prob wrongly) is against macho weightlifting (actually binh tells me it's more about just showing off, which still works) whereas No Type feels kind of a rejection of that gross byproduct of heteromale privilege, the Type. "What's your type?""Blonde, with long stems." Like girlfriends come in flavors or something. Obv "bad bitches is what I like" does not a male-feminist anthem make, but that shit is still worth calling out imo

xp I feel Sturgill's cover of The Promise could appear

Sorry didnt mean to sound stern, its just a fruitless exercise! It doesnt really make any difference what genre it is and recategorizing doesnt make it any different, and it definitely doesnt make it any better

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:24 (eleven years ago)

xp "Hideaway" has been a mainstay on VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown for months and months. That's how I end up hearing a lot of mainstream pop I wouldn't normally come across. She's pretty good, but is it really a good idea to bring back acid-wash high-waisted jeans??? They make anyone who's not a 6'+ model look ridiculous.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

no you're right xp
