Was quite nice to hear something different when the richard dawson started, and i was quite excited as well that it was only 11 seconds long. But things took a real turn for the worse once it started and i realized it was 11 minutes long. it was far from the worst this week but im feeling like ranking them by length at the moment

I cant remember what i thought about future because I went to make a cup of tea and its too long ago now

hideaway is an abomination

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:51 (eleven years ago)

I have no problem with Hideaway placing but I thought Giant In My Heart was way better. Probably on my own with that one.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:52 (eleven years ago)

is "Rather Be" gonna place then? I always had it and "Hideaway" vaguely twinned with each other in my mind, but I only voted for "Rather Be"

EVERY HUGH JACKMAN HAS A VAN HELSING (some dude), Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:53 (eleven years ago)

of course rather be is going to place.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:53 (eleven years ago)

"rather be" for #1 (not rly but i would prefer it to other predictable contenders)

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:54 (eleven years ago)

looks like my least hivemindy opinion this year is that Honest is a pretty good album with a few bad tracks and one of them is Move That Dope

rob, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:55 (eleven years ago)

Are you saving 10-1 for tomorrow gr80?

In past years we have had Scott Walker, Swans and the like place round about here I think. xps
― xyzzzz__,

bigger turn out the past few years might have killed that kind of thing off unless Scott o))) turns up which seems unlikely :(

wasn't xyzzz__'s post in response to a wiremag type song having only just placed

Assuming "Rather Be" is this Clean Bandit song? I didn't know who'd made this song, but I've definitely heard it before. Didn't realize it was top 10 level popular tho.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:57 (eleven years ago)

Cheers seandalai. Damn will miss the top ten mostly due to work then.

Thnx Grady

i didn't know she was canadian til relatively recently, was a bit disappointed bc a) it means the polish spelling is a dumb affectation b) i thought the lyrics had an endearing broken-english quality to them (you're JUST a feeling?)

loving today's run btw, lots I voted for (german whip my #1)

Catching up:

We need big dumb anthems like "Turn Down For What". The key is how every time the synth comes back it's playing a slightly different rhythm/melody.

Caribou is the single most boring dance act that regularly troubles these polls, even including Hot Chip. Lex otm at how negatively this compares after TDFW.

"Hot Nigga" has such a tense beat and I love how Shmurda continuously gets more animated as it goes along. There are so many memorable asides and I love when people manage to have radio hits where they just keep rapping, no hook. I think "A Milli" was the last one? Just listen to the wack Lloyd Banks track he jacked the beat from to see how much he brings to this, thank god he rescued that production. Also one of the best things I've seen in the past few months is a huge group of like 12-15 dudes randomly shmoney dancing at a bus stop.

"German Whip": This is really awkward. The double-time part doesn't work, the way they rap on this track doesn't work, the beat has a bad uncanny valley affect to American rap. Usually the token Brit-rap is better than this. I prefered "On a Level" and "That's Not Me" this year.

"Habits": This is a song I heard on the radio a bit and had no strong opinions about other than that the lyrics are a bit tryhard.

"That's Not Me": Ahhh much better. This is how I prefer my grimy OIIIIIIII!-rap.

"The Vile Stuff" I like the ramshackle, discordant guitar but not the ramshackle, discordant singing. Am I wrong in thinking this is kind of a Roma-style thing? Is he Roma? I wasn't really paying much attention to the lyrics, which I got the impression are key to the track. Oh well. This goes on way too long.

I said my piece on "Move That Dope" earlier but I voted for the version with Casino obv cause he has the best verse. Also other points: the hook is so incessant and the Salt n Pepa sample is A+.

"Hideaway": I love her voice so much. Shame none of her other songs were remotely this good. Gorgon City remix was the version I played out but I love the build and sweep of the original.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:58 (eleven years ago)

xp
it (Clean Bandit) was huge in the UK.

rob, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:58 (eleven years ago)

Rather Be was a top five hit in like 20 countries, I'm pretty sure it's going to place.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:59 (eleven years ago)

HA, TAKE THAT "No Type" fans. No top ten for you. The top ten is a NO FLEX ZONE.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 16:59 (eleven years ago)

"Hideaway": I love her voice so much. Shame none of her other songs were remotely this good.

i gotta say i think Giant in my Heart is a better track than hideaway, but they're both A+

good song obv but kind of surprised to see it so high

"no flex zone" for #1??

"no type" is definitely amazing and the second best 2014 rae sremmurd single though. i love the verses and the space

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

rev you are too smart and too thoughtful to discuss caribou in terms of being a "dance act"

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:01 (eleven years ago)

I despise Rae Sremmurd. It's like they created their sound specifically to make me hate them.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:02 (eleven years ago)

i have really no idea how anyone could have avoided "hideaway" until now

i mean it's not about going clubbing at all, it's just about existing in a world where people play music in shops and out of windows and other public places

― lex pretend, Thursday, January 22, 2015 8:43 AM Bookmark

It only reached #51 in the US. Not exactly ubiquitous.

i saw a really funny meme that was just a close-up/selfie of a dude making a fussy grimmacing expression and all it said (in thetraditional meme font) was:

"BUT.... THAT IS A TYPE."

i srsly spent like 20 mins last nite searching for it if anyone has it plz post

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:05 (eleven years ago)

i've come around somewhat on rae sremmurd, but still miss whatever it is that makes them goat for so many. catchy track though, can't deny.

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:05 (eleven years ago)

hugely controversial if that is a type or not

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:05 (eleven years ago)

sorry rev that came out way condescending but ykwim

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:05 (eleven years ago)

I should have voted for TDFW

example (crüt), Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:06 (eleven years ago)

i love how decayed the "no type" beat sounds... the first note is kind of apocalyptic

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:06 (eleven years ago)

I can think of seven songs that are nailed on for the top 10 (No Flex Zone, Rather Be, Two Weeks, Style, Blank Space, Seasons, 2 On) and three that could be anyone's. That reworked Jacko demo is in with a decent shout as well.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:06 (eleven years ago)

that "ooh ooh" thing Tove Lo does to round out the chorus is unintentionally funny

Vic Perry, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:06 (eleven years ago)

ooh first time i seen the video
we share a tee mr swae lee

nxd, Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:06 (eleven years ago)

i won't begrudge anyone who likes "no flex zone" better since they're very diff tracks in a lot of ways but i think i'll take the sheer generosity of the "no type" chorus over the energy and insistent melody of "no flex zone"

hard to go wrong though

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 17:07 (eleven years ago)

"BUT.... THAT IS A TYPE."

To us, bad bitches are a category. It’s not even a type. You got Asian, Latino, black, white, tall, short—we like all of them. As long as they bad bitches. I think “bad bitch” is like a trait that the girl should have. As long as she’s fine. Girls be like, “Am I your type?”
