Yeah, idk what this top 20 even is

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:02 (eleven years ago)

I was at the Just Jam thing in London before Christmas and Skepta turned up unannounced and people went absolute apeshit, just piling forward and dancing in this fully-seated classical concern hall and I realised what an anthem this actually was. It pretty much immediately went from the lower reaches to the top of my ballot.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:02 (eleven years ago)

I don't know any of these songs but <3 u ilm

seandalai, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:04 (eleven years ago)

YES!!! Love this from the opening second. Plus "Act like a wasteman" always makes me think of Nakh.

Really want to know what the other three are. (Does Slick Rick count?)

Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:04 (eleven years ago)

this seems to have a pleasant message at least, and is somewhat compelling. easily the best song of the day so far

'Pass Out' + 'Wearing My Rolex' + one up for grabs.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:05 (eleven years ago)

J0rdan S what are the others in your top 3? throw in a French one if you're not sure

nashwan, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:06 (eleven years ago)

1. wiley - wearing my rolex
2. tinie tempha - pass out
3. dizzee rascal - i luv u
4. meridian dan - german whip
5. skepta - that's not me

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:06 (eleven years ago)

matt DC otm

you could exchange "i luv you" for "if you're going out i'm going out too" and i would not be mad

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:07 (eleven years ago)

That's Not Me is great, hadn't heard that before
Every song on Run the Road is better than German Whips

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:08 (eleven years ago)

never heard of skepta before getting the results last weekend but this songs been on loop ever since, the all-star remix is fun too

my favourite skepta classic from back in the day is "duppy"

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:08 (eleven years ago)

o fuq "German Whip" is rad as hell

I'd heard "That's Not Me" before too but relistening to it, it sounds much nicer

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:09 (eleven years ago)

Whoa, I just found out Monie Love is British.

Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:09 (eleven years ago)

Jaymc you couldn't tell??

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:11 (eleven years ago)

actually for all the admirable things that aren't him, casual possessiveness over women isn't one of them - he seems to contradict himself numerous times about this, deliberately or otherwise - a sensitive man looking for the right partner or someone who will 'take your girl, no dinner no rose /
two minutes in my bedroom, no clothes'?

having an argument about uk hiphop without mentioning jehst :O lol

my shoes are deception (imago), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:11 (eleven years ago)

my folks when I wrote them told 'em what I was up to said that's not me

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

witness is too literally british rap to be included in an american's best british rap list

nashwan, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

Next song pls

, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:12 (eleven years ago)

the most fun i had on a dancefloor in 2014 was at a wedding when "turn down for what" played

"unorthodox daughter" is still probably my favourite grime track ever. SPIT A COUPLE BARS AND PUT YOU IN BUPA

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:13 (eleven years ago)

same xpost

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:13 (eleven years ago)

In all seriousness, some of the best parts of Turn Down For What are the silent bits.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:14 (eleven years ago)

this is a hell of a lot better than meridian dan, that's for sure. guest verse is kind of terrible, but i dig it overall. love the plip-plop synth percussion.

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:15 (eleven years ago)

hadn't heard either of these british rap songs b4, on first listen "that's not me" is much better, not totally into "german whip"

god that caribou track is so boring

lol nice to see "habits" place i guess, honestly radio overplay has basically killed the song for me. i liked it when it came out in 2013 but it didn't get a lot of traction here.

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:17 (eleven years ago)

Hey, I dont' really expect it to, but Digital Witness isn't going to place, is it?

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:17 (eleven years ago)

Love for the Gs in the ends
We don't love no girls in the ends
Last time I fell in love with a sket
But trust me, I will never do that again

Urban Dictionary: sket
www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sket
Definition of a young girl late teens or 20's who sleeps around willingly and without worry.

so he's a ho-shaming cunt as well? hate this now

i ain't mad at shmurda placing

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:17 (eleven years ago)

you lot will excuse some awful fucking lyrical sentiments if it has a halfway banging beat or a slogan

Please, this has been extremely common UK street slang for a decade now. Even I know this.

Smdh at J0rd for saying German Whips is better than, say "Cock Back"

Wu-Tang Clannad (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:19 (eleven years ago)

also a very nice and relaxing flute arrangement

J0rdan S., Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:20 (eleven years ago)

feel like both shmurda and makonnen struck gold w their hits and interestingly both of them had a second song that was good too but prob neither of them are crafty enough to repeat that brilliance, it was just a moment

the run of the last few posts is so weird to me. i joined ilx largely because of the amount of grime discussion happening and now there are n00bs who need it explained to them

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:21 (eleven years ago)

that being said, although it isnt something I'd play personally, the skepta was the first one Ive been able to play right the way through

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:21 (eleven years ago)

out of all of them?!?

the top 40 is just the sound of autotuned crying (sleeve), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:22 (eleven years ago)

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:22 (eleven years ago)

kinda hate "habits" tbh

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:22 (eleven years ago)

Making british rap the second track you show appreciation for has dropped you considerably in my ledger, saer :(

, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:22 (eleven years ago)

neneh cherry is swedish tho

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 15:23 (eleven years ago)

LJ there are literally dozens of threads in which rap fans talk about having to work through and past sentiments they find repellant, stop posturing and pretending you're the first person to have raised this brave new sentiment.
