I think the video didnt help German whip, thats what made it seem more novelty to me. Better to hear a new thing without watching a video I think
― saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:27 (eleven years ago)
Voted for it last year. The album is very good and i'd hope that would place.

cant stand the tove lo. theres been a few of these, incredibly plodding and then the chorus is blaring, and then its plodding again, just sounds like a person struggling with shopping bags uphill, anticipating being able to drink some juice, then they rest at the top of the hill and drink some juice, then they set off with the shopping again. dispiriting

Screencap is making me uncomfortable.

My vote was for the unnominated Hippie Sabotage Remix.

some context re German Whip (got a lot of Radio 1 support, maybe partly because it didn't feel as fast as default grime) http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/mar/27/second-coming-of-grime-dizzee-rascal-wiley

pretty sure this could've passed itself off as lorde's follow-up to "royals" without anyone noticing. have heard the name tove lo around for years from the kind of people who love scandopop that never actually charts so it was a surprise that one finally did. doubt i'd ever mind it as such but i don't feel any connection either
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:32 (eleven years ago)

Really like Habits. Her album should have gotten way more attention than it did.
― Kitchen Person, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:33 (eleven years ago)
habits it close to being a pandering/novelty track but i think at its heart its quite sincere and very important
i dont ever really want to listen to it ever again tho
― gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:33 (eleven years ago)
my #1 obvs

the kind of people who love scandopop that never actually charts
I'd be one of those people, and I really don't care a bit about Tove Lo, so maybe that explains something about her unexpected popularity.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:34 (eleven years ago)
theres a lot of post lily allen music on this list

I liked the opening line of 'Habits' but then lost interest fast.
― emil.y, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:38 (eleven years ago)
"Habits" couldn't be more dull and on-the-nose if the lyrics were "I am on DRUGS because SAD"

Don't really understand Tove Lo getting big commercially, or people loving her out of all scandi pop stars.
― abcfsk, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:42 (eleven years ago)
she really speaks to my need to stay high all the time
― Mordy, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:43 (eleven years ago)
my gf briefly considered liking this & added it to our joint EOY ballot-preparatory playlist but in retrospect it was never rly for us & we have maybe both disowned it (i will ask her)
it needs to be more ethereal imo

more actually-druggy
i have listened to both caribou tracks now and i like the sonics and vibes to some extent like it half way has a warm summer nights air france thing going on but then the rhythmic sensibility and singing and songwriting are so painfully self conscious the spell never quite takes hold
― lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:43 (eleven years ago)
unlike Caribou ft. Young Thug

DJ Snake ft. Lil Jon – "Turn Down for What" – Hard to separate this one from its wonderful/terrible video, but it's awesome in any context. Gr80 says, "it's huge and gaudy and shiny and pointless yet so joyous and beautiful and perfect and monumental", which yeah, but more crucially TURN DOWN FOR WHAT?!
Caribou – "Can't Do Without You" – Something Moby might have done a million years ago, with a dreary beige spectre moaning oertop. Eh, I'm trying too hard to sneer for effect. It's alright, inessential.
Bobby Shmurda – "Hot Sausage" – I kind of hate "Shmoney Dance", but this one works for me. Great for driving around town feeling like Travis Bickle. Pandemic's right about Shmurda's whole vibe being [more than] "a little heartbreaking", though.
Meridian Dan – "German Whip" – What the hell, people? You're better than this. And I don't give a fuck about the accent. Just dull and corny in every respect. Couldn't make it past two minutes.
Love To – "Habits" – Dunno why, but I've heard this song on the radio far more this past year than anything else that's shown up so far. I don't really like it, but appreciate those big, yearning chorus hooks in an indifferent sort of way. Also, I find the lyrical angle more irritatingly ~daring~ than "quite sincere and very important", but that's probably my age talking.
