amazing song and in my top 10, despite featuring the worst lyrics of the year from jme: 20 pounds of diesel mate, if i fill up my tank it'll make me late
― out here like a flopson (tpp), Thursday, 22 January 2015 13:56 (eleven years ago)
German Whip is amazing and i'd have voted for it had i not been as strict about 2013 releases.

i p much ignore grime (grime, right? UK rap?) so i never heard this till it came up on shuffle during the nominations a few times and i was mostly indifferent, but it's definitely grown on me over the last week, thanks ILM

Didn't expect this to place at all, still don't like it that much.
Pouring one out for the vastly superior 'That's Not Me' at this stage.

'German Whip' is great, I should've given it some points.
― Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:02 (eleven years ago)
lol let's not get smelling salts over grime when it was, like, one of the biggest genres on this message board back in the day
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:02 (eleven years ago)
this german whip song sounds like it could have come out any time in the last 10 years. don't hate it, but i'm surprised it's so popular.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:02 (eleven years ago)
i take it back re: turn down for what, that seems like halcyon days now
― my shoes are deception (imago), Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:04 (eleven years ago)
I disagree with that actually, German Whip feels like a track very much put together in the shadow of modern US rap, a grime tune from 10 years ago would've sounded nothing like this.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:04 (eleven years ago)
i just can't take british people rapping seriously, sorry
"turn down for what" is a very pleasant surprise!! dope song, never got old for me
― k3vin k., Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:05 (eleven years ago)
actually, you're right matt dc - the production is similar to 'shabba ranks' and other things
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:05 (eleven years ago)
anyone surprised by any pop-rap novelty hit making the ilx top 20 is insensate, lol

― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:07 (eleven years ago)
german whip isn't grime imo
― out here like a flopson (tpp), Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:07 (eleven years ago)
grime vocals over US rap beat - shouldn't be a novelty but apparently was (enough for it to nearly make the top 10 in Britain)
― nashwan, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:10 (eleven years ago)
People not taking British people rapping seriously are dicks imo.
― ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:14 (eleven years ago)
I don't think it was a novelty, I think it was a genuine underground hit, but it's a lot easier for those to turn into actual overground hits than it was a decade ago, for all sorts of reasons.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:14 (eleven years ago)
i think we know by now that imago thinks anything catchy or danceable is "novelty"

Bobby Sremmurd
― 龜, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:16 (eleven years ago)
one of the people in the bobby schmurda video has got my jumper on! not particularly my thing as i dont like words or the sound of the human voice, but the sound palette was really quite reasonable, not a bad effort!
german whip, maybe i shouldnt have watched the video at the same time but it felt like a comedy sketch by those people on tv (i dont know their names but ive saw 5 seconds of them once)
― saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)
thats not quite true about the words i have overstated my position because of the flu
