imago I hate to use a cliché but it bangs. How many tracks out this year banged this hard? It's just super fun. As a big party tune it manages, for me, to do the whole hip-hop/dance hybrid a lot more satisfyingly than any of the Ibiza/EDM influenced songs that have come out in recent years. And what's wrong with a dumb slogan anyway? It raises its rhetorical question and never answers it.

― 龜, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:40 (eleven years ago)
it's huge and gaudy and shiny and pointless yet so joyous and beautiful and perfect and monumental
― gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:40 (eleven years ago)
For some reason I thought this was a 2013 song. I dunno. Maybe just b/c I've heard it a bunch before and I'm usually about 12 months late on this sort of thing. Anyway, it's got good lines/beats popping up throughout, but fails to move me much as a whole. Also I tabbed over to the video for a second and it was horrible, so that's off-putting.
― emil.y, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:41 (eleven years ago)
i am thinking of it as gangnam style without the charm or the bassline tbh
― my shoes are deception (imago), Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:41 (eleven years ago)
it's a shouty man and a quirky synth thing, just shut up and party hard imago
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:42 (eleven years ago)

I don't even rate it that much, but I'm with Nick on this one.
Though I keep wanting someone to bring in some cats.

TURN DOWN FOR WHAT!!!!
i worked out a lot to this song a lot over 2014 and associate it very strongly with the music played during changeovers at tennis tournaments. i feel like victoria azarenka might have appreciated that, for one. when i did a trax list midway through 2014 this was on it but it slipped off my ballot by year end, which relistening for the first time in ages i am regretting. it was very "of its time".

i said this when Silver placed but i feel like he peaked w/ the Andorra LP, even if i still love everything he's done since. didn't vote for this but #19 feels abt right
― gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:56 (eleven years ago)
Lil Jon sounds good as ever on TDFW but the track is otherwise just garbage
― nashwan, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:57 (eleven years ago)
coming after TURN DOWN FOR WHAT!!!!!! does caribou no favours whatsoever. taking so long to get going is extremely ineffective but it's just as boring once it does "get" "going". bun these mopey grey boy vox 4eva. this is like if john talabot was the dullest man alive

7:18 EST def an earlier start that the previous three days tho, I've got shit to do today
― gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 13:03 (eleven years ago)
Can't Do Without You is ok but don't really get the emotional heft lots seem to claim for it. Silver is better.
― ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 22 January 2015 13:08 (eleven years ago)
I already know 'turn down for what', i think maybe the 2nd or 3rd of these i'd heard before, and i thought oh that ones actually alright despite its complete lack of conviviality. but then something happened. i played it. and at first it was exactly how i remembered, but then 20 seconds later. i have flu, i have a headache, its cold, what on earth am i doing listening to this? its shelf life is about 20 seconds. also im sure this came out last year and the year before. ive heard almost none of these records before and ive heard this one what seems like hundreds of times. amazingly its possibly the best one so far, i cant listen to it
the caribou record is what happens when you put a wool jumper in the washing machine. It doesnt matter how much you look at it, theres no use for it now, sodden misshapen and useless, on the positive side nobody got mown down by an autotuned monster in a tie and it didnt have the sound palette of a car alarm. regardless, its not listenable
as for the singing, what is that sound, why is he doing that?
― saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 13:15 (eleven years ago)
heard so many djs play 'can't do without you' this summer and the crowd loved it. i just don't get it.

as i said elsewhere, i'll take TDFW over this 100% of the time on account of trying to be fun
was it outdoors? it sounds like the kind of music you hear outdoors. its a shame that outdoors music is always garbage, it doenst make any sense!

I like Caribou but he peaked with Swim for me and the only thing I rate off this album is "Silver".

there was a discussion upthread about the emotional range of techno, which i think is vast, but "can't do it without you" is the kind of track that would make you think otherwise - its emotional effect is very saccharine and dissipates very quickly compared to the actual emotional heft electronic music can provide
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 13:22 (eleven years ago)
it was outdoors yeah! at a festival in croatia that was seemingly only attended by people who worked in the media

music for the oudoors has largely been a huge failure, which is a shame. On the one hand its good because it preserves the sanctity of the valley from the developers and the local autotune company, though they do set up camp near here once or twice a year and i have to retreat further into the longer grass, but on the other hand the best music in the world is afters music, 50-100 people, a cabin, and a river, and a variety of genial atmospheres
