3 favourite discoveries of 40-21 were Tkay, the song Stoner (the only Young Thug I've been able to fuck w/) and weirdly enough the choruses (but NOT the verses) of the Becky G

slim, slim pickings tho, if u r me. at least the riverbed punctuated it all

"2 on" in with a shot but it's the kind of song that winds up #3 i think

sounds about right - two weeks and future frigging islands above it

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 09:52 (eleven years ago)

please let there be a larrieux this year (a top 10 discovery i actually like)

my shoes are deception (imago), Thursday, 22 January 2015 09:55 (eleven years ago)

And serves out to love. That was a good match

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 09:58 (eleven years ago)

There's plenty of room for curveballs still I think, there are relatively few absolute bankers this year.

Also the second Royksopp & Robyn pick was a big surprise, so much better than the first one, I like the whole blankness of it, got a bit of a bargain basement Superpitcher vibe to some of it but I mean that in a good way.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:01 (eleven years ago)

yeah i came round to that one after my initial full-body shudder at seeing it appear

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:02 (eleven years ago)

dej loaf my favourite of the unknowns in the last batch though

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:03 (eleven years ago)

After a second listen, I think I do kind of like Hey QT for all its goofy idiocy. It really sounds like the kind of thing I could have made with a mate in an afternoon as a private joke. I don't really have a problem with this though? It's kind of DIY, it's cheap and silly. But then I like a lot of early-80s new wave-ish pop like the B-52s and stuff on Ze Records which isn't too different, aesthetically. I see why pop people fucking hate it of course.

John Talabot ft. Pional - Destiny - more like john toiletpot ft. pee on all “density”

got this far before i lost my shit completely

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:07 (eleven years ago)

Dog Latin completely otm re: Hey QT's goofiness, it's on-board the ZE records devil-may-care idiocy pushing modern pop into the bits where you put the mirror up, like slap-happy stupidity thing, nothing deeper.

Portugal minus Pedro Foster Cage (Spectrist), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:18 (eleven years ago)

can't wait for the 2k15 noise pop outfit 'john toiletpot'

nxd, Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:19 (eleven years ago)

John Toiletpot? - more like john talabot

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:21 (eleven years ago)

hope yr flu is improving saer and that the day finds you in good spirits

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:25 (eleven years ago)

Its not so good, i slept badly because of it and i have a headache too now and there was supposed to be a phone interview 45 minutes ago and the person hasnt called. Im not sure today is going to be good for me, i should be listening to more cordial music, or even better, silence

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:39 (eleven years ago)

I'm in silence now because listening to vibey music I will forget everything i know as i return to my natural woodland state. not good for interview. but its the wrong kind of silence, its not the silence of tranquility and leaves

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:43 (eleven years ago)

maybe one year we can all vote for a moment of restful silence and quiet contemplation instead of say, fruitless islands or tailors whiffed

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:48 (eleven years ago)

a moment? thats all? I was thinking more like 18 months

saer, Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:54 (eleven years ago)

"from now on the ILM Tracks Poll is a place of quiet contemplation'

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:55 (eleven years ago)

Also fuck you NickB Future Islands ROOL!!!!!! :-D

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Thursday, 22 January 2015 10:56 (eleven years ago)

the only future islands rule that i would condone is that they're never allowed near recording equipment again

Ottbot jr (NickB), Thursday, 22 January 2015 11:05 (eleven years ago)

the future silence rule

"bargain basement superpitcher"

!

||||||||, Thursday, 22 January 2015 11:17 (eleven years ago)

btw "Quarterback" made my P&J list, although initially I had problems with Isabella's vocal inadequacies. Then I let them help the song: it made what she described more poignant because it could happen to any girl of modest talents.

Some of Superpitcher's best stuff has that sort of cold, strung-out blankness to it - thinking about tracks like 'Tomorrow' rather than the poppier or more peak time material.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2015 11:22 (eleven years ago)

yeah, no, I agree. thought it was a spot on description.

Yeah, if "Good Kisser", which I expected to place in the top 20, was only #70, K. Michelle is doomed.

"Without Me" hit #23 last year but that was a fluke, I think.

20 DJ SNAKE & LIL JON "Turn Down For What" [290 points, 13 votes]

gr8080, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:18 (eleven years ago)

the eternal question

lag∞n, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:19 (eleven years ago)

Quick takes on yesterday:

Glad to see 'Quarterback' and 'Try Me' place - both good songs which didn't quite make my ballot.

Both Jessie Ware tracks sound much better than they did when I gave the album a listen, I should give it another try, I loved Devotion but the new one just washed over me.

Not a fan of any of the Young Thug tracks but I do like 'About the Money', don't know whether that's more down to the presence of T.I. or the production.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:20 (eleven years ago)

I feel this year there's way more stuff I've never even heard of than usual. Also more hip-hop I guess, probably correlated.

seandalai, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:22 (eleven years ago)

Production on About the Money is lush

Try this: imagine the chorus as "Do you eat the booty" and see if it doesn't change the song permanently for you

, Thursday, 22 January 2015 12:23 (eleven years ago)

I like the bit at the beginning of the Guru track where he intones 'Beautiful pooley'. I've no idea what 'pooley' means but I'm getting it conflated with the French word for 'chicken'. So yeah, this is an ode to a beautiful chicken until I know better.

I think maybe I'm the opposite? I don't know if that's a reflection on me or the poll though.

I figured. There needs to be more songs about chickens though.
