phantogram will always remind me of warm boozy butterfly-stomach makeouts bc this summer was the one time in my life when i was going on lots of 1st/2nd/3rd dates with lots of different women and every single one of them was obsessed with this band

i aint got no type/ phantogram girls is the only kind i like

― gr8080, Wednesday, January 21, 2015 2:36 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

lol, i will always love phantogram because i was listening to "turn it off" a lot in summer 2010 when i first started dating my gf and i can't listen to them without getting prousty flashbacks to driving to her house

i was listening to other shit too but their aesthetic just hooks onto memories i guess

39 D'ANGELO AND THE VANGUARD "Prayer" - i feel self-conscious about voting for this but it really is great. lovely but incredibly tense. i end up folding it into my own life too readily though

22 YOUNG THUG "Danny Glover" - such a great song. my coworker once asked me if this song was about 'the black guy from community'. tags include: teal windbreakers, the raincoats cover of 'lola', woodford manhattans, le samouraï, the part of dead wrong where biggie says 'i dont wanna rape ya/i just the paper', ryan mcginley

Is there a way of knowing the voters we have the most and the least in common based on ballot similarities?

― the QT conundrum (Moka), Thursday, January 22, 2015 12:14 AM (53 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

There's a column for your most similar voter. Least similar would be "most people" given that there would be zero overlap with a lot of voters.

What might be interesting - well, not really that interesting, but, you know - is seeing which track that eventually made the 77 was the last to be posted in the nominations thread.

― bae sremmurd (monotony), Thursday, January 22, 2015 12:25 AM (42 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Yeah I thought about doing something like this to check whether there's an advantage in early nomination (you'd have to control for other effects to be meaningful but what the hell). I haven't cross-referenced tracks with their nomination dates though.

Awaiting the grueling top 20. Guessing at least 17 of these are still left to place:

0 to 100/The Catch Up, 2 On, Blank Space, Can't Do Without You, Chandelier, Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck), Digital Witness, Fancy, Hideaway, I, Johnny and Mary, Lifestyle, Move That Dope, Never Catch Me, Queen, Rather Be, Seasons (Waiting on You), Turn Down For What, Turtles All the Way Down, Two Weeks

takes

40 GURU "Pooley"
i like how stately the beat is, it just sounds like something that is cool tho i wish i knew what he was rapping about.

39 D'ANGELO AND THE VANGUARD "Prayer"
so woozy, my goodness

38 TKAY MAIDZA "U-Huh" [326 points, 11 votes, 1 first place vote]
omg i love this, i want to listen to this on repeat for the foreseeable future.

37 PHANTOGRAM "Fall In Love"
i like this, it sounds like something that should have come out 20 years ago but that’s ok.

36 YOUNG THUG "Stoner"
nah.

35 SHIFT K3Y "Touch"
like the idea, love the piano chords, would love to get a different singer in there.

34 INDIANA "Solo Dancing"
idgi, is this like meta-club music? it’s trying to sound cool but it’s dorky as hell.

33 TAYLOR SWIFT "Shake It Off"
wore me down, i like it.

i wish the production was richer and the bridge didn't exist but otherwise it's kind of impeccable

yeah.

32 BECKY G "Shower"
this is like replacement-level pop, every move is predictable and the lyrical hook is blah.

31 THE WAR ON DRUGS "Red Eyes"
i like the album ok but no on a tracks placing. and the “let’s imagine an indie-rock man and his life” thing is one of the shittier things that happens on this board.

30 RÖYKSOPP & ROBYN "Monument"
wow this is a lot better than the prior royksopp/robyn song, i still got bored though.

29 DEJ LOAF "Try Me"
this is fine, i like the empty threatening quality, something about it makes me uncomfortable or weirded out so i didn’t listen to it a lot.

28 HODGSON "Babylon System
i don’t go out b/c i’m too busy listening to indie rock but this would be fun to hear out

27 JESSIE WARE "Tough Love"
i just realized some of these jessie ware tunes sound a lot like junior boys. maybe i’ll like her more now?

26 KIRA ISABELLA "Quarterback"
i have no energy to listen to this again, it’s fine, i respect it, that’s all.

25 T.I. "About The Money" Ft. Young Thug
hook is annoying.

24 OWEN PALLETT "The Riverbed"
TOO LOW

23 TAYLOR SWIFT "Out of the Woods"
my wife and i were really divided on this song. i think it will be one of the 1989 tracks i’m still listening to a while from now.

22 YOUNG THUG "Danny Glover"
i….don’t think i really like young thug :/

21 CHARLI XCX "Boom Clap"
cool song, i’m pretty happy when i hear this song.

flopson, Thursday, 22 January 2015 02:32 (eleven years ago)

lol yea i didnt think that sounded right

johnny crunch, Thursday, 22 January 2015 02:34 (eleven years ago)

it stayed in the charts well into 2014, but it was definitely very much a 2013 hit. i'm kinda wondering if there IS enough support for "Left, Right" or even "Who Do You Love" to place in the tracks poll. i voted for the later, but My Krazy Life works pretty well as a whole, that's kinda how i see the album even though it does have hit singles.

EVERY HUGH JACKMAN HAS A VAN HELSING (some dude), Thursday, 22 January 2015 02:53 (eleven years ago)

2/20 for today and 4/57 overall.

Bee OK, Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:15 (eleven years ago)

Eris will reward me for my QT nomination.

excreting zeitgeist (Sanpaku), Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:24 (eleven years ago)

i'm thinking no yg trax will place... same for k michelle :'(

dyl, Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:43 (eleven years ago)

i feel like in another year something like "can't raise a man" would have placed, but i don't think this voter pool is really into that kind of straight r&b

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:45 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, if "Good Kisser", which I expected to place in the top 20, was only #70, K. Michelle is doomed.

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:52 (eleven years ago)

(ftr, I only voted for her album)

The Reverend, Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:53 (eleven years ago)

Only made it a fraction of the way thru the thread so far looking forward to more, just want 2 say this rev opinion is crazy wrong:

Davido: This is cool but I feel like don't love Naija-pop because it's too focused on mid-range. When I listen to this I'm just waiting some heavy bass to appear the whole time.

i wasn't following the nom process; is there a reason "ain't it fun" wasn't?

goole, Thursday, 22 January 2015 05:10 (eleven years ago)

ain't it fun was nominated and place last year iirc

lukewarm takes:

GURU "Pooley" - I missed this until now; it's pretty great!

D'ANGELO AND THE VANGUARD "Prayer" - Voted for this. When I got off the train on the way home from the pottery studio today, this was playing on the headphones and a silent snow set off a moire pattern in the sky, every streetlight reflecting a diamond spray of mundane and heavenly beauty and i will likely be listening to this album until i die. one love to everyone else who mimes a punch in the air on each tone of the bell.

TKAY MAIDZA "U-Huh" - Voted for this. Straight up undercover superhit IMO; wouldn't be surprised to see her blow up this year. best use of the Godzilla scream since "What's So Different"

PHANTOGRAM "Fall In Love" - I tried Phantogram several times this year and I just can't connect somehow; some intangible quality is missing.

YOUNG THUG "Stoner" - My girl HATES young thug so i have to play him when she's not around and i do. this was the entry song that made it clear why he mattered.

SHIFT K37 "Touch" - this seems fine but on two listens just is a little too AW YEAH INTERNET KEWL for my tastes

INDIANA "Solo Dancing" - i can give or take the lyrics/singing but the synths feel like tangerine dream / risky business OST and that's a cheap way to my heart.

TAYLOR SWIFT "Shake It Off" - didn't like it when i heard it, still don't like it. the sax and "rap bridge" reminds me of thrift shop every time.

BECKY G "Shower" - as i said above, I like the idea of this more than the actuality of it.

THE WAR ON DRUGS "Red Eyes" - i tried the album a time or three and while I can't remember any of the songs (or this on playing it), it's just fine; neither deserving of hate or over the top accolades. Would be fine having this show up in a random mix once every two days or so.

RÖYKSOPP & ROBYN "Monument" - Voted for it. Complaints that this is too long or too ponderous or too whatever make no sense to me; it's up there with my favorites of the year. that lost, breathy sax!

DEJ LOAF "Try Me" - didn't vote for this but wish i had. this (and also shmurda's track which will chart shortly) is what the summer of 2014 really sounded like

HODGSON "Babylon System - totally new track, this seems good on cursory exploration but i gotta spin a few more times

JESSIE WARE "Tough Love" - Weirdly Tough Love and Champagne Kisses were tracks I didn't much care for on this album... I lean into Say You Love Me, Kind of Sometimes Maybe and (best of the pack) Keep on Lying.

KIRA ISABELLA "Quarterback" - Great track; a comparison that regularly occurs to me that I never heard anybody mention is Taylor's "fifteen"; same power and intensity and perspective.

T.I. "About The Money" - I think Paperwork was quietly a very very good album and TI's sense of what the public will pay for has never been better. This is a great track o'course.

OWEN PALLETT "The Riverbed" - Surprised to see another Pallett track on here (brief FYI to people saying hateful shit: you're aware he posts here, right?) but the more the better and this is superlovely. I'm hopeful In Conflict is a top five album on the followup poll.

TAYLOR SWIFT "Out of the Woods" - By FAR my favorite track on 1989 and really the only one I still come back to. The cover version I put up on Spotify is not a horrible representation.

YOUNG THUG "Danny Glover" - this is not in my top five of the year for thugger but not mad at it, do it for the vine

CHARLI XCX "Boom Clap" - Coincidentally, today is the day I finally gave a comprehensive listen to both Sucker and Cher Lloyd's Sorry I'm Late. I like Charli better than Lloyd but only barely and I don't like either of them much at all. I prefer "London Queen" and "Gold Coins" to "Boom Clap"
