I really really don't care who uses autotune and who doesn't. It's an artistic choice sometimes, an ass saver others, but whatever. I know when I hear it, though.

terje: so many of the songs here are kind of circular and monophonic so it’s cool to hear one that plays around a lot with harmonic variety and modulation. this album was kind of disappointing as a whole.

“crying for no reason”: i very much wanted to pull for a latter-day “total eclipse of the heart” but this is missing something. the melody is a little sing-songy. the last minute (the instrumental outro) is amazing, which is not a good verdict on what is supposed to be a torch song for the singer?

shamir: not feeling much here either way, i’ll defer to Rev’s opinion i think

“otra era”: really nice but i bet i never go back to this. funny she’s an ILM EOY perennial, i have no memory of anything earlier either

guru "pooley": this rules! i need to keep up with the afropop thread better.. that hymnal ascending chord lick is so good

d’angelo "prayer" again i have no idea how to differentiate the tracks on this album. those that have leapt out and grabbed me have not been the ones turning up here, weird huh.

tkay maidza: i have some kind of personal stumbling block with buzzing, distorted bass tones. it always sounds like a producerly shortcut to being big and in your face without actually being that.

phantogram: so, Mad Men pop with buzzing, distorted bass? i’m like on the edge of liking this but it’s just kind of embarrassing

"danny glover" is my favourite solo YT, beat is so evil. i don't think there is any autototune on it that's just what his voice sounds like

(ok alfred mentioned knopfler) i like dire straits! i always want indie bands to get big and hammy and emotional, thanks war on drugs! (“archie” made a big impression on me but i’ll probably never listen to this again) (ahem pt 2 flopson, young turks?? that was new wave as hell, that’s exactly what this is missing)

R&R “monument”: another one of these huh. sampled “oh” ascending scale is what makes it, not the sax. too damn long.

dej loaf: love it. great. totally love that there’s all these dudes lip syncing to this sweet voiced woman in the video

hodgson “babylon system”: this is one of the best things on the list so far without question

“tough love”: i sing along to this really loud in the car, hit back and do it again, though i drop it an octave, because i have to be a man about it.

“quarterback”: holy shit. disappointing that the video shows us a happy-ish ending that the song does not.

TI and YT: man i fell in love with this when i came out and then forgot about it, whoops! i love how TI sounds really choppy and chirpy at times and YT kind of smooths out (a little), like they’re really happy to be playing off each other (self reminder to pay more attn to london)

I wrote up a bunch of hot takes of the songs I'd never heard before but it was so negative and I deleted it. good work on the Javiera Mena track though! and "riverbed" was surprisingly badass. I thought I'd listened to that album but I will have to revisit

wow, the charli song is low. I kind of prefer the Marcus Schlossow (sp?) mix which is very trancey and prob not to everyone's taste but I love the way it slows down half way through and speeds right back up.
