it's ok, i didn't hate it when i first listened to it (during nom process) but i'm skeptical of its social commentary value - it seems to be a pretty widespread trope now. maybe the novelty is doing it in [nominally] country music where maybe this kind of thing doesn't have the same kind of ubiquity.

"He was a quarterbaaaack". Could be a burger flipper too, or paperboy. I don't even know where to begin with this rubbish, this ain't for me.

about the most ignorant thing it's even possible to post about this song
no, he couldn't be anything other than a football player. firstly, the protagonists in the actual real life events the song was inspired by were football players. secondly, this is a song about social status and how it intersects with rape culture: as a quarterback (not a burger flipper or a paperboy!) he's put on a pedestal by the whole school and the whole town, which is why they believe him and not some band nerd girl.

all right this is definitely a cool way to talk about this song xxpost

― ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:42 (eleven years ago)
I'm all for anti-rape songs or just songs commenting on the experience for victims to relate. Not a fan of the music medium they chose.
― Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:42 (eleven years ago)
'quarterback' is the key part though, bc QBs are the golden boys of middle america at the high school and collegiate level

That's exactly what I hated about this. Thought this was a cliche? And I don't even know what a quarterback actually does or entails, I don't understand American football (lol European). Is it like Josh Hartnett in Virgin Suicides? A sports heartthrob turning vile or something?
― a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:42 (eleven years ago)
is it a cliche bc it actually happens irl

― flopson, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:44 (eleven years ago)
i mean i know the british thing but still, lex gets it
Lex, I'd never thought I'd say this, but for you - always claiming ignorance about sports except tennis - lecturing someone about what a quarterback is, is hilarious.
Xp got it, thanks Brad

Thought this was a cliche?
Perhaps, but it's also loosely based on a true story from Steubenville, OH.

College heart throb sports player, got it, ty guys
There have been an awful lot of very high profile, very distressing cases of college/high school football players and their general protection by their local society from having to face the consequences of raping girls. The fact that it's a quarterback reflects this. Of course it's not just the golden boys of American Football who rape, but it isn't an arbitrary choice.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:46 (eleven years ago)
you can't deny it sounds like any other country-pop song
all the trees look the same when you look out the window from your room, its only when you go into the woods that you can see each more clearly
― saer, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:46 (eleven years ago)
christ, i know fuck all about american football or what quarterbacks actually do but i know enough about how they're perceived by society (and it's not as if they're aren't direct analogs in european sport)
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:46 (eleven years ago)
imo this is a gorgeous, heartbreaking song. think we covered it extensively in its own thread, but the details in the arrangement add tremendously to the narrative

Tough Love is very beautiful and I can get behind the Quarterback sentiment, and I'll cheer for Isabella but I can't find myself enjoying the song.

mods rename the board ILSaer
Becky G – "Shower" – Not sure what use I might have for this, but yeah, strong echoes of "Umbrella", pre-chorus & chorus both work like gangbusters, top shelf pop product.
The War on Drugs – "Red Eyes" – RMDE @ the group-squawk every time some middling indie rock song troubles the collective viewscreen. Trust me, no one's gonna dock yr points if you fail to lodge the approved objection. [/crotchety] Song's kind of boring, no less seductive for that.
Röyksopp & Robyn – "Monument" – Song's kind of boring, no less seductive for that, lol. Like The War on Drugs track (which it roughly resembles), solid in its own ballpark, inapplicable outside that.
Dej Loaf – "Try Me" – I gather that vaporous drift is part of the appeal, and I'm not denying the underlying emotional bite, but musically, this doesn't do much for me. Still nice, something I'll come back to. More charmed by the Rice Krispies product placement in this vid than Becky G's Cover Girl, but YMMV.
Hodgson – "Babylon System" – Nice, if slight & familiar. Not really designed for home use, I expect.
Jessie Ware – "Tough Love" – Heartstopping, even better than "Champagne Kisses". Need to hear this album. Exclamation point!
Kira Isabella – "Quarterback" – I halfway on board w/ this song, but my appreciation depends 100% on the lyrics. Aside from that, it's not awful and I actually like her singing, but the basic sonic stamp of contemporary pop country utterly repels me. My loss.

it feels weird for me that so many itt are calling this cliche. i don't remember where i first came across this song but i do remember feeling really surprised, like i was punched in the gut or something. it sets itself up like it's going to be a cliche ("you belong with me" style, like rev noted) but then reveals itself to be anything but.

also beyond steubenville the player who has a chance at being the #1 draft pick for the NFL next season was accused of rape and generally seems to be a terrible person aside from that, but if he's a good player he'll be a hero.

feel like the "Quarterback" video unwisely defuses some of the horror of the lyric at the end there, maybe the song was just TOO REAL otherwise
