If this had to be here, I'm glad it's this low.

Every passing year has the Springsteen it deserves.

Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:24 (eleven years ago)

christ

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:24 (eleven years ago)

this is not in the top half of tracks on the record but it was the single so i guess it makes sense to be the one that shows up?

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

the war on the war on drugs

nxd, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

appalled

lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

suspect the album will place much higher comparatively

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:25 (eleven years ago)

we need to end the war on drugs

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:26 (eleven years ago)

let it all out, folks

gr8080, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:26 (eleven years ago)

Hey QT all is forgiven

, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:26 (eleven years ago)

The thing is that this band can write good, concise songs. I've heard them do it. But this album spends half its time up its own ass.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:26 (eleven years ago)

enjoyed this song in footloose tbh

Ottbot jr (NickB), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:26 (eleven years ago)

War On Drugs are pleasant enough but I have a hard time believing people who seem to find them an exciting proposition. Their placement at the top of so many albums lists is unfathomable. Still, I've come to enjoy Red Eyes as a standout track with a memorable hook that was worth casting a low vote to.

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:26 (eleven years ago)

zzz but i guess it could be worse

dyl, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

I gave it a second chance over the holiday, and while its pretty meaninglessness has its attractions it still doesn't sound Springteenian or like Knopfler (both of.whom recorded plenty of tuneful meaninglessness).

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:27 (eleven years ago)

War on Drugs finally clicked for me when relistening to albums for this poll. It's easy to dismiss on the first couple of listens, but there really is something good in there and it stays with you.

silverfish, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:28 (eleven years ago)

mass meltdown as a War on Drugs song places. you guys are soooo predictable

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:28 (eleven years ago)

nice to see neil hannon jamming with them in the video though

nxd, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:28 (eleven years ago)

Welcome to Drowned In Sound dot com!

telling like hot takes (imago), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:28 (eleven years ago)

the war on drugs is fine, just insanely overrated

i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:28 (eleven years ago)

I'd prob have voted for Disappearing if it had been nominated.

ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:29 (eleven years ago)

The War on Drugs: Suck My Cock

The Reverend, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:29 (eleven years ago)

Hey, where'd the 8-bit Swift go in your playlist, forks? Better option than Kidz Bop imo.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:29 (eleven years ago)

is this one of those songs that wouldn't place if we deleted votes from ppl who also voted for the album

dyl, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:29 (eleven years ago)

Red Eyes (and all the other songs on the album) sort of meander for far too long, I prefer older songs of him like 'Taking out the farm', the same kind of trick but more concise.

Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:30 (eleven years ago)

I would have voted for "eyes to the wind" if i bothered voting for tracks this year

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:30 (eleven years ago)

a migos cover of shower (featuring thugger) would win this thing in a walk

plus quavo wouldnt have to finesse the plug

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:30 (eleven years ago)

Ahahahha

out here like a flopson (tpp), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:31 (eleven years ago)

How can you not see the Springsteen influence? It's the same thing Arcade Fire where doing on the suburbs album.

Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:31 (eleven years ago)

Honestly this isn't the worst thing ever but I just can't imagine what it would be like having any use for this sort of thing. Like what kind of lives do War On Drugs fans lead? What are their hopes and fears? I imagine they spend a lot of time thinking about mortgages.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:32 (eleven years ago)

Don't hear it either.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:32 (eleven years ago)

When people say "sounds like Springsteen" in this context, what they really mean is "this sounds big and important like 'Born to Run'".

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:33 (eleven years ago)

i spend my life posting on internet forums, i fear death and disease, and i don't have any mortgages to worry about

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:34 (eleven years ago)

X post right rev. It's such asinine music. Nice in a way, but hardly anything to get excited about

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:34 (eleven years ago)

I like this song, don't think I bothered voting for it. Going to save my ire for when Future Islands finish in the top ten.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:35 (eleven years ago)

yeah i don't hate this exactly but that is the best thing i can say about it? i wish there were anything interesting about the way they were playing it. like go for it and make it sound like "in a big country" dudes

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:35 (eleven years ago)

it's also a billion years long

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:35 (eleven years ago)

Asinine? Anodyne

quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:36 (eleven years ago)

I thought in the context of War on Drugs they mean "It sounds like 'Dancing in the Dark'".

MarkoP, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:36 (eleven years ago)

i like future islands too. i'm the monster at the end of the thread

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:36 (eleven years ago)

i like the distanced, druggy (ironically) production vibe on this, kinda wish they'd reign in the exciteableness and Big Country guitar shit. feel like a bunch of different genres have had people using emotionally flattened sounds this year, to answer Rev i reckon people listen to this stuff to embrace the blankness?

god help us otherwise

Gombeen Dance Band (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:36 (eleven years ago)

dammit Brad beat me to the Big Country zing

Gombeen Dance Band (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:37 (eleven years ago)

I do spend time thinking about mortgages.

silverfish, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:37 (eleven years ago)

if 'in a big country' came out today it wouldn't crack top 30 on the tracks poll either

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:37 (eleven years ago)

when stuff like this gets compared with him, i guess Bruce must feel about the same Kate Bush does when people bring up Bat For Lashes and Florence. poor Bruce.

Sky Ferreira wrote the best Big Country rip in years already.

The only fan I personally know is also a big fan of Wilco and My Morning Jacket. He works as a programmer, drinks one or two beers almost every day, looks like mexican quentin tarantino. Is afraid of commitment and living in one city his entire life.

Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:37 (eleven years ago)

[indie rock song] IS LITERALLY THE WORST SEWAGE THAT I HAVE EVER COME WITHIN A 100-YARD RADIUS OF IN MY ENTIRE FUCKING LIFE

Jennifer 8.-( (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:37 (eleven years ago)

migos + young thug rapping over a big country sample think abt it

gr8080, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:37 (eleven years ago)

This is far from the most offensive thing that's been featured in the rundown so far, but also one of the least distinctive, so.

Vulvacura (Eric H.), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:38 (eleven years ago)
