ILM's Top 77 Tracks of 2014

Beyoncé placed 4 in the top 77 last year, I don't have stats for previous years to hand but I doubt anyone has surpassed that.

this is the first one in a while I've no idea what it is.

Today is off to a more interesting start than yesterday, I must say.

Is there any kind of label push behind Tkai Maidza at all? Because it feels like the sort of thing that could be a hit in the UK but there doesn't appear to be any kind of organised campaign. She doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry ffs.

This band... I really enjoyed a 7 track EP I got sent by them a few years back, but their similarity to a lot of other 'Shambala' pop stopped me investigating further.

They're one of those bands that had an interesting debut but every new album they seem to lose more and more the initial charm.

never heard of this band, sounds like third-tier late 90s trip-hop with cheaper synths. vocal is reminiscent of mono or people like that but this isn't grabbing me at all

This Phantogram single is gorgeous. Couldn't really get into the rest of the album but ended up putting this in my top five after only hearing it on the nominations playlist.

auto-played every time i opened up the spotify tracks nominated and am unsure whether that improved / deterred it for me

My first encounter with Phantogram was by recommendation from Ty Dolla $ign.

"U-Huh" is very good though I slightly prefer Tkay Maidza's "Switch Lanes."

This single is good but I feel like I should be listening to Little Dragon instead when it's playing.

Ha was just going to say there's something very 90s about this and saw the lex had made the same point. Third tier p harsh but it's not doing much for me.

Yeah, they really don't sound anything like These New Puritans. I only listened to the album once but aren't they closer to someone like Young Galaxy or Chairlift?

Hey, I voted for Phantogram! It's all very "white ppl doing music black ppl did 10 years ago" (my frame of reference is early 2000s rap/r&b-radio soul chopups, rather than trip-hop) but such a well-done example thereof. Props to Some Dude and Ty Dolla Sign for getting me to listen to it.

There are definitely a type of women that love Phantogram. Was that single featured in some perfume ad or something? They seem particularly influential with women that fancy themselves as trendy and fashion-aware.

"Pooley" is good, I think I prefer the other afrobeats track that placed cause it was more turnt up and emphatic whereas this one is more laidback and cool.

I think there are at least 8 songs on Black Messiah I prefer to "Church". It doesn't really go anywhere, even by D'angelo's standards. Most of his songs slide in hook that might not grab you til the 5th time you hear it but then never lets go. This one doesn't. That bell is great tho, yeah.

Tkay Maidza I thought was gonna be more afrobeats based on name/title, turns out it's sub-Azealia Banks mediocrity instead.

i like how this songs placement is also the title of a different track thugger was on in 2014
