Instead of talking about Hey QT can we talk about YRN some more

SHEESH
On my tombstone: SHEESH
U-huh could have been bigger but as some of you have pointed out it didn't seem to get a proper release until months later when the hype had dissipated.

She's diggin my moves! (she's diggin my moves!!)
― 龜, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:02 (eleven years ago)
Damn, I need to get onto this Afrobeats thread. Lovin' both Guru and Davido tracks.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:03 (eleven years ago)
yeah i really need to do the same. there's just too much great stuff to let pass by.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:04 (eleven years ago)
there were a lot of Beyonce album tracks in the lower reaches of last year's poll as well.
Beyonce was my first thought too.
― Vulvacura (Eric H.), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:05 (eleven years ago)
okay this is wonderful
― pandemic, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:06 (eleven years ago)
Just realized that YRN is almost kinda like a beauty pageant or a male runway show
― 龜, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:06 (eleven years ago)
Today has started amazingly! Does she say "bum chum" at one point in this? Hope so.
― ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:07 (eleven years ago)
Beyoncé placed 4 in the top 77 last year, I don't have stats for previous years to hand but I doubt anyone has surpassed that.
― seandalai, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:07 (eleven years ago)
this is the first one in a while I've no idea what it is.
Today is off to a more interesting start than yesterday, I must say.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:07 (eleven years ago)
Is there any kind of label push behind Tkai Maidza at all? Because it feels like the sort of thing that could be a hit in the UK but there doesn't appear to be any kind of organised campaign. She doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry ffs.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:09 (eleven years ago)
Tkay not Tkai.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:10 (eleven years ago)
didn't vote for "u-huh" but i'm glad it placed, it is just super immediately likable
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:14 (eleven years ago)
Haim had about 4 entries in a year, surely? Or did it just feel that way?
Def liking Tkay, too. Good stuff.
― emil.y, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:14 (eleven years ago)
never heard it before but i like it fine. refrain sounds a bit charli xcx?
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:15 (eleven years ago)
this Tkay reminds me of Laurie Anderson's Let X = X in its synth hook :D
it's good!

― gr8080, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)
memories have faded but thought a chunk of MBDTF placed
― nxd, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)
i like how much ppl like this song, without really loving this song
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)
Rihanna maybe?
― Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:18 (eleven years ago)
This band... I really enjoyed a 7 track EP I got sent by them a few years back, but their similarity to a lot of other 'Shambala' pop stopped me investigating further.
― quinoa: how's it spelt? (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:20 (eleven years ago)
xp just checked re:kanye 4 as well (2010)
― nxd, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:21 (eleven years ago)
They're one of those bands that had an interesting debut but every new album they seem to lose more and more the initial charm.
― Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:22 (eleven years ago)
i get mixed up between this one and 'black out days'
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:22 (eleven years ago)
this is the one with the really gloomy synthpads i think?
never heard of this band, sounds like third-tier late 90s trip-hop with cheaper synths. vocal is reminiscent of mono or people like that but this isn't grabbing me at all
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:23 (eleven years ago)
This Phantogram single is gorgeous. Couldn't really get into the rest of the album but ended up putting this in my top five after only hearing it on the nominations playlist.
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:24 (eleven years ago)
auto-played every time i opened up the spotify tracks nominated and am unsure whether that improved / deterred it for meprobably made my initial cut
― nxd, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:24 (eleven years ago)
My first encounter with Phantogram was by recommendation from Ty Dolla $ign.
― MikoMcha, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:24 (eleven years ago)
"U-Huh" is very good though I slightly prefer Tkay Maidza's "Switch Lanes."
― Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:25 (eleven years ago)
This single is good but I feel like I should be listening to Little Dragon instead when it's playing.
― Moka, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:26 (eleven years ago)
Ha was just going to say there's something very 90s about this and saw the lex had made the same point. Third tier p harsh but it's not doing much for me.
― ewar woowar (or something), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:26 (eleven years ago)
Was it gr8080 who said that "U-Huh" had a Zooropa vibe?
― Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:28 (eleven years ago)
HAIM had 3 songs place last year, but have had 2 other songs from Days are Gone place back in 2012.
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:29 (eleven years ago)
Also, "Fall in Love" is great.
― Tove Lo Tove You Baby (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:29 (eleven years ago)
Phantogram come off to me a bit like less-interesting These New Puritans, but there's still something there I can get with
― telling like hot takes (imago), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:32 (eleven years ago)
TNP?

ha, i dont think so... but it sorta does!
― gr8080, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:33 (eleven years ago)
a Zooropa remix maybe!
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:34 (eleven years ago)
Pooley made it!!!!! I had completely given up on it, and now I'm so so happy. I was one of the 3 #1 votes, of course. 320 with 8 votes, that's 40 per vote, is that the highest this year? So far?
― Frederik B, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:35 (eleven years ago)
phantogram will always remind me of warm boozy butterfly-stomach makeouts bc this summer was the one time in my life when i was going on lots of 1st/2nd/3rd dates with lots of different women and every single one of them was obsessed with this band
i aint got no type/ phantogram girls is the only kind i like
― gr8080, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:36 (eleven years ago)
phantogram: leading the cohort of our decadent promiscuous doom
― telling like hot takes (imago), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:37 (eleven years ago)
that would mean you do have a type
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:38 (eleven years ago)
Phantogram come off to me a bit like less-interesting These New Puritans
not seeing this at all i'm afraid. lex was right, this sounds more like someone from the 90s who wasn't as good as moloko
― Ottbot jr (NickB), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:40 (eleven years ago)
Naw you guys are crazy. Stoked this made it. My #1.
― all about that ace of base (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:43 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, they really don't sound anything like These New Puritans. I only listened to the album once but aren't they closer to someone like Young Galaxy or Chairlift?
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:44 (eleven years ago)
Hey, I voted for Phantogram! It's all very "white ppl doing music black ppl did 10 years ago" (my frame of reference is early 2000s rap/r&b-radio soul chopups, rather than trip-hop) but such a well-done example thereof. Props to Some Dude and Ty Dolla Sign for getting me to listen to it.
